Barett "Bear" McNabb, 33, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Tuesday McNabb had been serving with the U.S. Army on his fifth deployment to the Middle East. He had been with the Army for 13 years and most recently was serving out of Fort Lewis, Wash. He was the son of Steve and Georgia McNabb of Salida who flew to Dover, Del., on Wednesday to accompany his body back to Fort Carson before returning to Salida to make arrangements, according to Arlene Shovald, a family friend and former correspondent for The Pueblo Chieftain. He also is survived by wife Georgette McNabb, stepdaughter Jessica and son Jacob, 15. McNabb had served on missions in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. Department of Defense and Army officials declined to comment on the cause of McNabb's death pending notification of all relatives. Chieftain readers will recall that McNabb's mother, Georgia McNabb, then a U.S. Postal carrier, launched a public plea for help in 2004. Boxes of hygiene products were mailed to Iraq thanks to donations sent from throughout Southern Colorado. McNabb said when he returned home in 2006 that he was able to help the whole battalion with the treats and supplies. Boxes came containing cards, pictures and banners from Pueblo West schoolchildren; while Rocky Ford residents sent a box for each soldier featuring underwear, socks, playing cards, hygiene items, prepaid phone cards, candy bars and more. Condolences may be mailed to the McNabb family in the care of family friend Arlene Shovald, 1124 D St., Salida, CO 81201.
