Battery Management Systems (BMS) The brain of an advanced battery system is the Battery Management System (BMS). Would you entrust your vital application to a “generic” BMS, or would you rather rely on the engineers who’ve built battery management systems for everything from Formula 1 race car batteries to UPS systems for space craft launches and batteries for sophisticated military vehicles? At the core of our business, we value safety, reliability, and performance as essential prerequisites for every advanced battery system we design and build. Navitas has developed a complete family of BMS products, to address systems of different battery chemistry types, voltages, system capacities; you name it, we’ve got it.
Broad Range of BMS Products Navitas manufactures--through our fully owned subsidiary, Navitas Electronics-- a wide range of advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS). Each of our standard BMS products is optimized for a variety of advanced battery chemistries and for a variety of applications. These applications can range from small mission critical military grade lead acid replacement batteries all the way to large high voltage systems. If one of our existing BMS solutions does not fit a customer’s unique needs, Navitas has the experience and expertise in custom BMS design and manufacturing as well. Any solution we recommend is to support both our core values as well as customers’ expectations for life, cost, and compatibility.
Sophisticated BMS Features Available options in our product line of Battery Management Systems include communication of key battery parameters over the controller area network (CAN) and/or Ethernet. Navitas also offers a wireless add-on that can broadcast battery parameters wirelessly for easier monitoring of a large number of batteries without having to directly access each battery or vehicle. A sample of the parameters that our products can be programmed to monitor and control include: l l l l l
Individual cell voltages for each cell or super cell Temperatures of cells and key components within the battery pack State of Charge of the battery pack State of Health of the battery pack Current available for pulse and continuous operation for both charge and discharge
Safety functionality includes: l l l l l
Overvoltage protection based on cell voltage Undervoltage protection based on cell voltage Temperature protection Overcurrent protection Disconnection of the cells in case of fault condition
BMS capabilities include both passive and active balance options for maintaining optimal battery performance throughout battery life.
Navitas’ Advanced Low Voltage BMS options include charge control capability, allowing advanced Lithium batteries to be charged by standard lead acid chargers and to allow those batteries to be connected in parallel for maximum flexibility. Remember, “one size doesn’t fit all”. Navitas works with customers to choose the best option to balance cost and capability based on specific application needs. < Mobile Renewable Power Systems Drop in Lithium batteries to replace lead acid >
