SUKHOTHAI BRIEFS City existed around 1238 - 1438. It was located year Yong River so that the trading and transportation was more convenient. Sukhothai history was very well known through out the record of national Thai history in the late 19th century. The country name was Sukhothai Kingdom, with the capital city named Sukhothai.

MAJOR BELIEFS During Sukhothai age, people in Sukhothai Kingdom revere Buddhism since Thailand was not too open to many other culture as nowadays. Specific group of people also believed in Hinduism religion because there were Brahmans traveling/living in Thailand at that age. Thai people believed in Animism, and also black magic as well. They tent to be dependent of Animism than logic because people were not thinking rationally at that time.

BUDDHISM IN SUKHOTHAI AGE There were two sect during Sukhothai age: Nae-Ra-Wat and Ma-HaYan. Most people followed in Nae-Ra-Wat because Poh Khun Intharathit was the leader of Nae-Ra-Wat branch at that time. Even though they also belief in spirit property for the sake of peace and city property, Sukhothai Kingdom main religion was Buddhism at that time. For example, Phee Baan Phee Muang (ผีบ้านผีเมือง) is believed to protect the city from misfortune and negative energies. The Sukhothai religious beliefs were adapted from forming alliance with the other kingdoms (like India) and with the help of the monk, their main religion became Buddhism. Praying speeches were given through stone/rock, just like how Poh Khun Ram Kham Hang created Thai alphabets and numbers through stones.

ANIMISM & HINDUISM The spirit beliefs of Sukhothai Kingdom were also known as Animism. Since the King is a free Kingdom that was not owned or conquered by other country, people believed in Hinduism because there were group of Brahmans traveling/living in Thailand.

People believed that Animism and spiritual believes were very crucial to the city in that time because it was believed that it brings peace and eminence to the nation and city.
IMPORTANCE OF BELIEFS AND RELIGION TO SUKHOTHAI AGE Religious believes were very crucial in the Sukhothai age to citizens and people, because it makes Sukhothai a unique nation with their own specific believes The King or known as Poh Khun Intharathit was so dedicated to Buddhism that he supported the religious beliefs in many ways which end up making citizens follow him and so Buddhism became Thailand’s major religion. Believes and religious beliefs during Sukhothai age also teach citizens ethically so that they permit appropriately in the society. Sukhothai age was also famous because of their unique believes and their numerous of citizens that believe in one religion, Buddhism in whole nation. How Thai history during Sukhothai period reflect beliefs, culture, or Thai lives at present? Thai Animism beliefs was developed and was brought by Hinduism when there were numerous amount of Brahman living in Thailand. Thai people were curious and that curiosity became their major beliefs. At the present, people are still believing in Animism and spiritual beliefs, so this reflects that Thai people were very religious and believed in a lot of spiritual beliefs until it became part of their life. Thai culture was reflected by Buddhism when Buddhism became Sukhothai’s major religion. People’s regular routine had changed and it became their culture, such as waking up early in the morning to offer food to monks, or go temple to pray during Buddhism special events. People nowadays were very influenced by different types of technologies so Animism were starting to shrink, but it did not disappear because there are still people who still believe in Animism and spirit obeying. There are still Brahman performing spiritual ceremony for people who revere in Animism and spiritual beliefs. Temples are still all around Thailand and Buddhism is still Thailand’s major religion, therefore, Sukhothai age reflected Thai beliefs, culture, and lives in the past and nowadays.
