Standards give examples of scientific innovation challenging commonly held perceptions

Objective Students will group lizards into similar characteristics by x-ray measurements and counting toepad lamellae

Objective Students use measurements to more accurately group the lizards and answer several questions based on these groupings.

Objective Students learn that differences in traits can evolve as adaptations to different habitats and start to think about how such differences can lead to the evolution of different species.

Objective Students learn that for speciation to occur, there has to be a mechanism that keeps members of one species from mating with members of another species—in this case, reproductive isolation.

Activities Module 2: In this module, students use DNA sequences from the eight anole species they measured in Module 1 to determine their evolutionary relationships. Module 3: students perform an experiment to test whether changes in habitat can result in the evolution of different traits in a group of lizards.

Activities Module 3: Finish Module 4: students measure the dewlap colors of two different species of lizards that live on the island of Puerto Rico.

evaluate the ongoing, collaborative scientific process by gathering and critiquing information Montana HS-LS3-3 Apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population. Next Generation Science Standards

HS-LS4-4 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how natural selection leads to adaptation of populations. Next Generation Science Standards

HS-LS4-5 Evaluate the evidence supporting claims that changes in environmental conditions may result in: (1) increases in the number of individuals of some species, (2) the emergence of new species over time, and (3) the extinction of other species. Next Generation Science Standards

Objective Students will look at how natural selection leads to evolution of organims Activities Lizard evolution virtual lab video Materials http://www.hhmi.org/biointe ractive/lizard-evolutionvirtual-lab Assessment

Activities Module 1: Ecomorphs Species of Caribbean anoles can be categorized into groups, called ecomorphs, according to their body characteristics (morphology) and the ecological niches they occupy. In this module, you will take measurements of lizards from species belonging to four different ecomorph groups.
