A blocked nose is a common symptom associated with viral infections such as the common cold or the flu. They occur as a result of our mucous membranes becoming inflamed and they can be eased using a variety of home and herbal remedies. Here at A.Vogel Talks Blocked Nose our immune system expert Dr. Jen Tan explores the causes and symptoms of blocked noses, and provides an array of natural solutions to alleviate nasal congestion. There's also a Q&A service where you can get answers to all your questions. Ask Dr. Jen Tan our immune system expert your blocked nose question.

An important function of the nose is to purify inhaled air. The nasal passageways are lined with tissue known as a mucous membrane - this produces a slimy secretion (mucus) with the purpose of keeping the nasal passages moist. Fine vibrating hairs called cilia are present whose function is to trap dirt particles entering the nose. They clean around 10,000 litres of inhaled air a day and minimise the amount of inhaled bacteria. This is why it’s important to breathe through your nose as much as possible.

If you are suffering from a cold and your nose is running constantly, the mucous membranes will become swollen and inflamed leading to a blocked nose or nasal congestion. When inflammation occurs, mucous secretion becomes viscous and

A blocked nose or nasal congestion is when you wake up with catarrh dripping down the back of your throat, you find it difficult to breathe quietly, you are unable to exercise without struggling for breath and you feel as if you are always clearing your throat.

Treatment is usually in the form of nasal decongestant sprays that are sprayed directly into the nostrils. raju — 19.11.2017 05:08 Hi sir , I had an accident 11 years back.My nose got damaged by that time. Now I can't sleep properly . If turn left then only i'm able to sleep. otherwise after some time my both of the nostrils are blocking.because of that i'm getting snoring.Even in day time also its blocking once in every 2 Hrs.Please suggest me. Is it serious ? i'm facing this over the years. Reply Jen Tan — 20.11.2017 02:41 Hello Raju. I am sorry to hear that you have been so troubled with your nasal blockage. It is unlikely that the condition is life-threatening or serious, although I suspect that it causes great inconvenience. Damage to our nose 11 years ago might suggest that you know have a structural abnormality of your nasal bones and this could be one cause of your nasal symptoms. An ENT specialist will be the best person to consult and in the best position to help. Reply

Oladejo Ismail — 19.11.2017 02:26 My one nose block in the night and affect the quality of my sleep daily. It most times disappear in the morning. Various drugs has not help. Reply Jen Tan — 20.11.2017 02:41 If medication has not helped your blocked nose, we would then be looking at the possibility of a physical cause such as nasal polyps or a structural defect of your nasal bones. To eliminate these causes, I would suggest you consult an ENT specialist. Reply

saral rajkarnikar — 29.10.2017 02:40 am i the only one whose both nostrils are blocked? i have to use nose drops daily twice a day. How can i get rid of it? Reply Jen Tan — 29.10.2017 21:23 One possible reason is the presence of nasal polyps. These are structural obstructions in your nasal passages and more likely if you suffer from nasal allergies. For this condition, you are best getting checked out by an ENT specialist. Reply
