Blues Community Challenge These wellness competitions encourage teams to compete against each other to see who can log the most "miles" of physical activity. No matter which team comes out ahead, getting healthier makes everyone a winner. Body & Soul and the Blues Community Challenge The partnership: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the American Cancer Society The place: Metro Detroit, Flint and Grand Rapids The participants: Members of African-American churches The plan: To decrease the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. The faith-based, 10-week competition combined pastoral leadership, educational activities and the church environment. More than 30 churches and 1,000 individuals participated. Let’s Get Moving Blues Community Challenge The partnerships: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Sault Tribe Strategic Alliance for Health The place: Eastern Upper Peninsula The participants: Members of four tribal communities The plan: Teams received grants from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to enhance physical fitness programs in their community. At the end of the eight weeks, more than 500 participants collectively logged more than 116,000 "miles" of physical activity, nutrition and other healthy behaviors.
Winter Warm-Up and the Blues Community Challenge The partnership: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Community Partners in Health The participants: Residents of Charlotte, East Lansing, Grand Ledge, Lansing, Williamston, Delhi Township, Delta Township, Lansing Township, City of St. Johns The place: Greater Lansing The plan: Teams competed for grants to support public health and wellness projects in their community. Winter Warm-Up, a free, eight-week walking program through Community Partners in Health, was the perfect match. It encourages people to exercise more and eat healthier. It also provides blood pressure checks and wellness information.
