1) Introductory Remarks I have been studying the organizations of the “Armored and Motorized Infantry“ units of the German Army in World War II since the early 1980’s. This started with my interest in the units included in the War Games: PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader. Since many of early war K.St.N of the German Army were lost due to allied bombing, my main interest has been in recreating the organization charts of the (gepanzert (gp) and motorisiert (mot)) Schützenregiments, of the early war period. Over the last 30 years, I have collected information from the U.S. National Archives, the Imperial War Museum in England, and the Bundesarchiv in Germany. I have over 200 microfilm copies of the German Army records that I obtained 2 or 3 at a time. This is the second of several Booklets I plan to produce covering the Schützen and Infanterie Regiment organizations of the German early war Panzer and Motorized Infantry Divisions. NOTE: The German Army called the infantry units in the Panzer Divisions “Schützen”, whereas they called the infantry units in Motorized Infantry Divisions “Infanterie”. This booklet will cover the “Schützen” Regiment K.St.N” of 1.2.41. Although Some of the K.St.N.’s issued in February 1941 have been found, most were not. I believe that these K.St.N’s were not used a great deal, because the German units used early war K.St.N.’s, with the changes noted in the issues of Allgemeine Heeresmitteilungen, until mid-1941. Also most of these new K.St.N.’s did not change the early war organizations from what was being used at that time. Of all the German Army Organizations I have researched, these K.St.N.’s are the easiest to recreate because a great deal of information can be found in the German records. Using existing K.St.N.’s existing strength reports and other good data sources I have been able to recreated excellent estimates of these early war K.St.N.’s. If you have any data or comments about this publication, please contact me at [email protected].

2) The K.St.N.’s in the Schützenregiment (Datum 1.2.41) During the reorganization of the German Army Panzer Divisions between the French and Russian Campaigns the Germans issued new K.St.N.’s dated 1st February 1941. The Chart below shows the K.St.N.’s that were issued for a Schützenregiment on February 1 1941.

3) The Organizational Strength of the Early 1941 Schützenregiment The organizational strength of the Schützenregiment units was determined by using the following German Army records: 5th Panzer Division: Microfilm T314 Roll 266 Frame 880 - # of MTW.’s (soll) in this Division. 16th Panzer Division: Micro Film T314 Roll 536 Frame 710 - Kfz. (soll und Ist) Strength 18th Panzer Division: Microfilm T315 Roll 706 Frame 567 - Personal (soll und Ist) Strength Frame 582 & 586 - Kfz. Strength Frame 583 & 591 - Personnel and Weapon Strength 20th Panzer Division: Microfilm T315 Roll 742 Frame 908 - Weapon Strength Microfilm T315 Roll 741 Frame 841 – Personnel Strength When the German reorganized their Divisions due to heavy losses during the Russian Campaign they used the 1.2.41 K.St.N.’s. The records shown above contain very accurate information on the total numbers of personal, weapons, and vehicles in each of the issued K.St,N.’s. Although these totals are very accurate, the distribution shown within each recreated K.St.N. may not be totally accurate. The strengths of each of the Schützenregiment’s units are shown in Charts 2 below. The total strength of the Schützenregiment (both with and without a gepanzert Kp.) is show on Charts 3 and 4. For a more detailed breakdown of the strengths of the Schützenregiment’s units see Appendix C.

4) The K.St.N.’s of the Schützenregiment a) 1104 - Stb. /Schütz. Rgts. The K.St.N. for 1104, Stb. Schützenregiment (Datum 1.11.41) was used as a guide for recreating this K.St.N. The organizational strength data from the sources listed in 3) above were also used. b) 1153 - Stbs. Kp. /Schütz. Rgts. The K.St.N. for 1153 (gp), Stbs.Kp. Schützenregiment (gp) (1.2.41) was used as a guide for recreating this K.St.N. The Krad,Schütz.Zug,, Hilfskrankenstragerstaffel, Waffenmeisterei, Verpflegungstroß, and Gepacktroß were assumed to be the same in both units. The Pi. Zug was assumed to be the same as in German Manual H.DV. 220/9 dated 1.11.40. The Instandsetzungsdienste was added from “Allegemeinine Heersmitteilungen 1940, article 1174 (T78 Roll 660). These additions brought the organizational strength close to the stengths listed in 3) above. The Group Führer, Nach.Zug., and Gefechstroß parts of the unit were then adjusted to match all the strengths listed in 3) above. c) 1108 - Stb. /Schütz. Btls. The K.St.N. for 1108, Stb. Schützenregiment (Datum 1.11.41) was used as a guide for recreating this K.St.N. The organizational strength data from the sources listed in 3) above were also used. K.St.N’s. 123 (1.2.41) and 1108 (Kol.) (6.8.1940) were also used as guides to the layout of this unit. d) 1114 - Schütz. Kp. b (mot) The organizational data listed in T78 Roll 851 page 402 shows a detailed layout for this unit. This along with the organizational strength data in 3) above allows an excellent recreation of this Kompanie. e) 1114 (gp) - Schütz. Kp. b (gp) The organizational data shown in Book 1 of this study along with the organizational strength data in 3) above allows an excellent recreation of this Kompanie. More detail will be discussed in Book 3. f) 1116 – M.G. Kp. b (mot) This is a copy of an original K.St.N. of this Kompanie. g) 1121 – (T.E.) Führ. Schw. Kp. (mot) 9|Page

The organizational data listed in T78 Roll 851 page 411 shows a detailed layout for this unit. This along with the organizational strength data in 3) above allows an excellent recreation of this unit. h) 1122 – (T.E.) Panz. Jag. Zg. (3 Gesch.) (mot Z) This is a copy of an original K.St.N. of this Kompanie. i) 1123 – (T.E.) Gesch. Zg. (2 le.J.G.) (mot Z) The organizational data listed in T78 Roll 851 page 411 shows a detailed layout for this unit. This along with the organizational strength data in 3) above allows an excellent recreation of this unit. j) 1124 – (T.E.) Pi. Zg. (mot) The organizational data listed in T78 Roll 851 page 411 along with the German manual H.Dv. 220/9 Pioniere (1.11.40.) gives details of the layout for this unit. This along with the organizational strength data in 3) above allows an excellent recreation of this unit. As noted in the chart 2) the Brückengerät D bridge staffel is not included in this unit as it was an add-on to the actual K.St.N.. See Appendix B for the strength of this bridge unit. k) 1120 – Gesch. Kp. (2s., und 4.l.J.G.) (mot Z) The organizational data listed in T78 Roll 851 page 405 shows a detailed layout for this unit. This along with the organizational strength data in 3) above allows an excellent recreation of this unit.

The proposed organization strength of each Schützenregiment is shown in the tables of Appendix C. A list of those regiments that had a (gp) Kompanie in them are listed in Appendix A. The recreated gepanzert K.St.N.’s of 1.2.41 units other then 1114 (gp) will be show in Book 3.

5) Afterword Although these new K.St.N.’s were issued in early 1941 (1.2.41), it appears that the Panzer Divisions did not quickly adopt the new charts since the new organization charts were very close to the organizations already in use (Example the 18th Panzer Division did not use these new K.St.N.’s until it consolidated its Schützen units in July – August of 1941). German records show that these K.St.N.’s were used (with some changes until early 1942. These changes were made to somewhat comply with the temporary K.St.N.’s that were issued in September 1941. These temporary (Datum 15.9.41) organization charts called for the M.G.Kp. (K.St.N. 1116) of each battalion to be eliminated and 6 of the s.M.G.’s and all of the s.Gr.W’s. to be moved to the three Schützen Kompanies. The two remaining s.M.G.’s were to be transferred to the Pak Zug in the Schwere Kompanie as le.M.G.’s. The le.Gr.W.’s of each Schütz.Kp. were to be removed. Although a new addition of K.St.N.’s was issued dated 1st November 1941, these new organizations were not fully implemented until the reorganization of the Panzer Divisions in the winter of 1942. The K.St.N. of the gepanzert Kp. (1114gp) was included in this study because almost all of the Panzer Divisions had at least one in its Schützen Brigade organization (only 4 of the 20 Panzer Divisions did not have a gp Kp.) (see Appendix A). Book 3 will discuss all the gepanzert K.St.N.’s in greater detail.

German records show that this unit was attached to almost all of the Pioniere Züge of the Schutzenregiments in 1941. An example of this is the report “Kfz -Lage der 16. Pz.Div.” that shows Kfz totals which included the Bruckengerat D in the Pi.Zug of each Regiment (T315, Roll 536, frame 000710).

Organizational Diagram for Schützenregiment (1.2.41 K.St.N.)

The early war organization diagrams did not show the difference between motorized and armored units. Some of the Schützenregiments would have one or more gepanzert Schützen Kompanien (See Appendix A).
