BREWSTER HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING 2017 “The beauty of the universe consists not only of unity in variety, but also of variety in unity.” -Umberto Eco (author of The Name of the Rose) This year, in order to provide a variety of titles for summer reading and to build a community of readers, the English Department reached out to teachers and administrators throughout the building. Below, you will find lists of fiction and nonfiction titles that cover a variety of topics and themes chosen by some of your favorite administrators, and history, math, science, modern language, art, special education, English and music teachers. We’ve designed the lists by grade level, but we encourage parents to have conversations with their children about advanced subject matter that may appear in suggested titles. Book descriptions can be found at www.amazon.com. Read the descriptions and reviews, see what connects with you, and choose books (from our list) that you will enjoy reading! Summer reading assessments will occur in ALL English classes within the first two weeks of the school year. We strongly suggest that students take notes while reading in order to complete assignments when they return to school in September. ✓ Students enrolled in an honors level, college level, or AP level course will have additional summer reading assignments. These students should read one book from the appropriate grade level list (below) AND complete course specific summer reading work. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Students entering 9th grade should choose one of the nine books from the list below to read this summer. ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢
