KAISER PERMANENTE’S MEDICARE PLANS IN CALIFORNIA GET TOP NATIONAL RATINGS FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR Only one health plan in California merits the maximum 5-star rating by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for excellence in care and service Oakland, CA, October 10, 2014: – Kaiser Permanente announced today that its Medicare plans in California again have received an overall rating of 5 stars for parts C and D, the highest rating possible from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Through the Medicare Star Quality Rating System, CMS assigns scores of 1 to 5 stars to Medicare plans based on more than 50 care and service quality measures across nine categories including staying healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service, and pharmacy services. The new 2015 ratings for the state encompass both Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California and South-
ern California regions, and this is the fourth consecutive year that Kaiser Permanente has been rated the only 5-star Medicare plan in California. Nationally, Kaiser Permanente comprises five of the 11 plans rated with 5 stars for 2015. “Kaiser Permanente’s consistently high quality scores in the CMS ratings and other national health-care surveys go hand-in-hand with our leadership role in reshaping American health care,” said Kaiser Permanente Northern California Regional President Greg Adams. “Our high-quality care and a focus on prevention are keeping people healthier and often preventing illnesses and disease from occurring in the first place.” The 2015 star ratings for Medicare health plans are available on the Medicare “Plan Finder” on the www. medicare.gov website. Plans that earn 5 stars are designated with a special “High Performing” icon for easy identification. “The Five Star Medicare rating, combined with the recently released quality ratings from the National Committee for Quality Assurance and our consistently high rating by the California Office of the Patient Advocate, demonstrates the superiority of the health care we provide in Kaiser Permanente compared to the rest of medicine," said Robert Pearl, MD, executive director and CEO of The Permanente Medical Group. “Our physicians, nurses and staff provide medical care that is personalized, technologically advanced and closely coordinated across both inpatient and outpatient settings. The gap between the quality of outcomes we achieve in heart disease, cancer and preventive services compared to what the rest of medicine has to offer is growing year by year.” Star ratings provide Medicare beneficiaries with information to help them assess health plan quality of care and service delivery to make an informed choice when selecting a Medicare plan. Star ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next. In addition to receiving high quality service and satisfaction, 5-star excellence means that Medicare beneficiaries may enroll in a 5-star plan starting Dec. 8, 2014 without having to wait until the next annual enrollment period. Medicare beneficiaries can learn more about the Medicare Star Quality Ratings and Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare plans by visiting www.kp.org/medicarestars, www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan, or by calling Kaiser Permanente at 1-855-817-5831.

SSF’s population doubled after the US entered WWII. Over 40 industries operated in SSF by 1940 many, including Western Pipe & Steel, were involved in the war effort. Western Pipe had 700 workers in the late 1930s; a number which increased to over 15,000 by 1945. It is difficult to underestimate the state of emergency the country was under following Pearl Harbor. Supporting the war effort was a 24-hour a day job. Thousands of new workers were needed in SSF alone to staff the factories and shipyards around the clock. People came from across the US heeding the call to come to California to support the war effort. But the lack of housing quickly became a big issue. With a war-time emergency declared, the federal government began construction on four housing sites in SSF. The largest, Lindenville, was located in an open field between what is now Victory and Railroad Avenues which was turned into 720 units housing over 4,000 people. Because housing needed to be built so quickly, the units were far from comfortable. Lindenville consisted of row after row of armylike barracks built very cheaply, four walls and stucco exterior. The units were either too cold or too hot depending on the season, making them barely livable. Lindenville quickly became a small city within a city having a recreation building, nine barracks serving as an elementary school, a baseball field, and a laundromat. So many babies were born that a child-

care center had to be built. With such a diverse population, Lindenville became the police department’s biggest headache, especially during the post-war years. Many SSF police officers referred to Lindenville as “the Hell Hole of creation”. As one officer put it, “when we got a call there, every available unit responded.” The place took 80% of our time with family beefs, shootings, knifings, everything.” SSFPD 1892-2003. In addition to Lindenville, the federal government built three smaller housing sites: Cape Esperance, Palau Village, and Industrial Village, which was designated as low-income housing. The government, in conjunction with the SSF Housing Authority, ran Lindenville until 1955 when it was turned over to the city. It was demolished in 1958 with the completion of multiple subdivisions west of El Camino Real.

the Library. Membership makes a great gift for an individual or a family and starts at $10. Meetings are held quarterly on the 2nd Tuesday of January, April, July and October @ 6 pm in the Main Library auditorium. Friends of the Library is also looking for volunteers to help with the daily lobby book sale. Funds raised through the sale help support library programs. At the October meeting, for example funds were contributed to the library to enhance Ebook and book on CD collections and to fund renewal of Tumble Books - an online book program for Children. During the year, Friends' funds support Project Read, the library's literacy program, Summer Reading Programs for Children, adult online book clubs, Discover & Go - the free museum ticket program for library card holders - and much, much more. Book sale volunteers have the bonus of seeing what goes into the sale first - cookbooks, Children's books, new and nearly new fiction and non fiction, DVDs and more. For more information on volunteering to help out Friends, contact Cheryl Grantano Rich, Assistant Library Director, 650-829-3876. Visit us on the web at: http://www.ssf.net/531/Friends-of-the-Library
