CASE STUDY Title

McDonald’s Fast Food Outlets – Philippines Energy Resources Group has been working closely with McDonald’s – Philippines, through our distributor, OSP – Honeywell, and their sub contractor PUC. McDonald’s Philippines – have been a breath of fresh air, in their pragmatic approach to replacing chemical refrigerants such as R12, R134a, R22, R502 and even the later gases in the R400 series. Several pilot projects have been carried out – and based on this, the company (McDonald’s Philippines) have decided to move to natural refrigerants, wherever practical, safe and viable to do so. The actual case study involves one of many pilot projects carried out on behalf of McDonald’s – and it was chosen – not because it’s the best – but the latest. The system converted was a 10 TR (35 kw) split system with roof mounted condensing unit, and ceiling void, ducted evaporators. Leak detectors were fitted to the system outlets – and wired to a controller interface that energises a correctly sized extract fan – to remove any leaked refrigerant from the area, a solenoid valve is also de-energised isolating the refrigerant to the outside unit, and the unit will pump down and trip on low pressure. The low pressure switch was also changed to a ‘manual’ re-set type.

RECORDINGS OF PRIOR AND POST Kw/HR CONSUMPTION

The above data confirms a 17.4% energy saving – in direct power reduction – this is without factoring in the better cooling – where you can clearly see a vast improvement of air off temperatures.

Background

The Energy Resources Group, and it’s associates, have been working with natural refrigerants for many years, with a supply chain, agreed training methods (ERG have carried out training in the past for the UN, Swiss Contact, GTZ, Governments, Technical Establishments, Private Companies) The emphasis on a quality training program, structured safety procedures, and quality natural refrigerants, have driven our successes.

We have been involved in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Dubai, Turkey, Doha and obviously Australia.

OSP Advantage System Corporation – is a long standing multi faceted organisation in the Philippines – with one part of the organisation crossing onto another - HVAC and Energy Savings. They have adopted new technologies – and absorbed intensive product and safety training with ease. They are progressive, but in a methodical manner. They work with key major clients within the Philippines.

Refrigerants

Our total focus is based on removing chemical refrigerants and replacing them with Natural Refrigerants (Ammonia, CO², Desiccant, Solar, and Hydrocarbons) – our experience goes back some 8 years, with a near 100% success rate. Systems from small domestic refrigerators – to large chillers, we have been involved in development with organisations like Unilever, LG, Godrej and Electrolux to name but a few. Successful application, of natural refrigerants, for all systems. Continued, development of new, natural refrigerants, to replace, harmful and energy hungry chemical gases. All recovered refrigerants are either stored for use in applications where natural refrigerants are not practical, or sent to a suitable destruction facility.

Experience So Far

To date the Energy Resources Group have been involved in, 1000’s of system conversions, all system sizes – from 1 TR (3.5 kw) through to 300 TR (1050 kw). 99% of these conversions have produced excellent energy saving results. These system conversions have been predominately in SE Asia, but also in Mauritius, Dubai and Turkey. Particular attention is paid to ensuring a safe, efficient conversion with engineered solutions to eliminate any risks.

Energy Advantages

To date – average, and very conservative estimates – have shown a 17% to 22% energy advantage over and above chemical refrigerants – the case history today shows 17% improvement in reduction of power consumption alone – without adding in better/faster cooling. Reduced head pressures exert less stress load on compressors/mechanical components – extending their natural life.
