Steve Robinson, President, Board of Directors In this special 100th Anniversary issue of Mishpacha, you will learn about all the exhilarating events surrounding this special year for Jewish Family Service. The annual meeting, chaired by the Spolane family, was an entertaining evening filled with style, grace and a healthy dose of JFS history (page 12). ReelAbilities was a profoundly emotional and educational gift from JFS to the City of Houston in honor of our 100th anniversary (page 10/11). The overriding theme of this week long city-wide event was to focus on abilities, not disabilities, inclusion not exclusion. Many thanks to all the generous sponsors and to the tireless efforts of all those who helped make this historic event possible. “Celebration of the Century” will recognize the families who had the vision to build a bridge to our future and those who have established funds for our 100 Names for 100 Years initiative (see page 8/9). Please join us on June 2nd for the party! If you are unable to attend, please support this milestone event with the purchase of a raffle ticket for a new car (page 16). You may have noticed the common thread throughout this article is family. At Jewish Family Service, Family is Our Middle Name (pages 4 – 7). As I am a second generation family member to become extensively involved with JFS, I find great pleasure serving our community. I am also proud to say the seeds planted over the years with my own children have started to take root. I hope your family will join mine in creating your own legacy. Call us, 713-667-9336, to find out more.

JFS Executive Directors Guide Agency Through History As one “gingerly” looks through the fragile pages of the JFS minutes of the early days of Houston United Jewish Charities (JFS’ first name), many transcribed in a flowing handwritten style, there appears a mandate central to our heritage…that all Jews are responsible for each other. And, from the records of the oldest continuous social service Jewish institution in Houston, you learn, how a small group of men and women dedicated themselves to that theme 100 years ago…and continues that obligation to this day! This group of volunteers provided financial aid (many from their own personal resources), and helped find employment, offered loans to purchase cows for farmers, gave funds to the widowed mother with three children to put food on the table, o r secured a place to stay for needy Jewish individuals. As you follow the JFS Time Line at the bottom of each page, you notice year by year changes in structure and services provided. Following World War 1, when Eastern European immigrants came to Houston and services and

During wartime, JFS offered service people and their families assistance. Displaced persons and orphaned teens placed in local homes through collaboration with the Pauline Sterne Wolf Memorial Home. Fred worked with Department of Psychiatry of Baylor College of Medicine for a psychiatry resident to bring a medical component to the agency, beginning in 1976. Instrumental in developing adoption program.

New counseling programs addressed the challenges of the times in many areas. Agency resettled the hundreds of Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union in l980s. Directed the application process for Goldberg B’nai B’rith Towers and arranged for a service coordinator’s at the Towers, which is still in place.

needs became more frequent, the Houston Community Chest (now known as the United Way) recognized the work being accomplished and deemed it a beneficial agency eligible to receive community funding (which we continue to receive). To qualify for this funding in 1937, a social worker, Rella Greenberg Schlanger , was hired with recommendations by prominent Jewish members of the Community Chest board: Simon Sakowitz, Joe Weingarten and Melvin Rouff. By 1940, Ruth Hutton Fred became the first executive director, with Solomon Brownstein following her in 1977. His service continued until his retirement in 1999. Mary Jean Weston, who began her employment with JFS in 1981, took over the directorship in 1999. Currently serving CEO, Linda L. Burger, began her leadership in 2005. For 73 years of the agency’s 100 years, only four executive directors have guided JFS through calm and challenging times, but each has contributed their own brand of leadership to fine-tune services, bring on new and timely programs…each reflecting the changes in the world at their time.

ach was born in a different year…each with a different name than you know them today…yet, each with the same meaningful goal… to offer support and assistance in many forms to those in need. • Houston United Jewish Charities was born on October 6, 1913 • Community Chest born in the fall of 1922 • Jewish Community Council born on April 28, 1936 As they grew from birth, to adolescence, to adulthood, to maturity… through calm times, through the Great Depression, two World Wars, to the technological age of the 21st Century, all three are still working each day to make life better for our community…and NOW they are called: • Jewish Family Service, age 100 • United Way of Greater Houston, age 91 • Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, age 76 As the oldest Jewish social service agency in Houston, Jewish Family Service, a beneficiary of the United Way and the Jewish Federation since their inceptions, has maintained an exceptional partnership with each. All three have grown into pillars of strength for the entire greater Houston area. Linda Burger, JFS CEO, looking back through the history of JFS, noted where both the United Way and Jewish Federation came to the assistance of JFS either in the form of monetary resources or by providing administrative directions. “In 1937, following a comprehensive study of all the Houston Community Chest agencies, it was necessary for United Jewish Welfare Association (JFS’s name at the time) to completely revise its daily operations. To assist in that organizational restructure, the Jewish Community Council (now the Federation) offered their director for a period of 60 days at no cost. Since that time of transition, it allowed JFS to begin having leadership by professional clinicians. JFS and the Federation have partnered on many, many programs that have benefitted our community. We continue planning for ways in which that partnership and the resources the Federation provides can best ensure safety net services,” commented Linda Burger. “United Way helps JFS by providing funds for our Senior Adult Services and Family and Children Services. Thank you, United Way, for resources and guidance in caring, with dignity and grace, for both seniors and individuals in need of mental health counseling. Thank you, Federation, for your enduring support and continuing collaboration to meet the ongoing and ever changing needs of our community through JFS,” stated Burger.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston is delighted to acknowledge, with deepest admiration and appreciation, Jewish Family Service on its 100th Anniversary. Our shared value of chesed— caring for the most vulnerable among us represents the embodiment of the missions of the Federation and JFS. And, as we look back on the historic partnership between the Federation and JFS, we can take jpride in what we have accomplished together--from the resettlement of refugees from foreign lands, to the support and care given to patients in the Texas Medical Center, from victims of horrible natural disasters to victims of calamitous financial situations. Our collaboration has gone to the heart of our rabbinic teachings: “Kol Yisrael Aravim Ze La Ze”- Each Jew is responsible one for the other. Lee Wunsch President and CEO Jewish Federation of Greater Houston

For a century, Jewish Family Service has cared for the vulnerable and disadvantaged from all walks of life in our area, lifting people up and giving them the tools to build a foundation for a better life.  There is nothing more important or noble, and our city is so much stronger for the work of this great organization. United Way of Greater Houston is proud to call Jewish Family Service our community partner. ”                                                                            Anna M. Recently, I read a Facebook posting that made me think of Jewish Family Service. The writer, Ben Goldfarb said, “May we be blessed to have the resources of royalty, the humility of servants, the self respect of being G-d’s children, and the honor and health to integrate and internalize it all.” As we celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Jewish Family Service, I cannot think of a more beautiful prayer to express our gratitude and to guide us into the next 100 years. We have indeed been blessed with the resources of royalty. There are many individuals who have chosen to share their means with JFS over the years, thus, strengthening our ability to serve our community. We have been endorsed by the support of both the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and the United Way of Greater Houston, throughout the long history of both organizations. We have staff who serve our clients with humility and who model dignity through their actions. The leadership and staff operate in a manner which allows us to respect every human being as a gift from G-d. To treat everyone with such respect and to value their very essence, was the goal of the newest project of our JFS Alexander Institute for Inclusion, ReelAbilities: Houston Disabilities Film festival. We invite you to join us as we move into the next century. The health of our agency and the ability to integrate and internalize comes from the many strategic collaborations and partnerships we constantly build. Whether you join us as a FRIEND or as part of our 100 Names Initiative, we are thankful to those who help make Ben Goldfarb’s prayer come true.

family Jewish FAMILY Service. Note that “family” is our middle name. Not only is family the focus of our mission, but also has been an underlying theme of the individuals who have led, supported and volunteered at JFS for the past 100 years. Presidents and Board members often introduced our work to family members who later took on similar leadership roles at the agency. Families who received services through the agency would later pass on their devotion to this community work to the next

generation. Volunteers recruited siblings or encourage their children, or even parents, to join them in their satisfying service. Today the trend continues. In these pages, you will see examples of families who have shared with their loved ones their passion for helping our community through JFS. In our list of nearly 400 volunteers who served in 2012, there are many families’ names repeated…the tradition continues from one generation to the other.

Teaching the Joy of Giving Sue and Greg Lewis have created a tradition during Chanukah of letting their children, Jake and Ella, 9 yearold students at The Shlenker School, open their banks one night and select how much money they would like to give for tzedakah…teaching the youngsters the joy of giving! Jake wrote the following for a school assignment: “My Dad likes to give. My sister and I go to JFS every year to give money. When people give money to JFS, the people who work there use it to help people. After we deposit the money, our Dad shows us around the building and we meet some important people who work to help people. My Dad is a good role model.” Sue noted, “This lesson in giving and how their tzedakah makes a difference for others makes this part of Chanukah their favorite.” (l to r) Greg (Vice President on the JFS Board), Ella, Sue and Jake.

While Shirley was primarily busy with her family’s home life, she had a strong passion for Jewish Family Service and was devoted to the agency’s many programs and services. Shirley’s affection for JFS was engendered not only because she was dedicated to helping others, but because it was through JFS that she and her husband, Allen, adopted Sunni…something for which both women and their families express continuing gratitude.

Last summer, Richard’s brother, Lenny, was the “bus back-up rider” while Richard was on vacation. Sister, Lillie Hurwitz, has volunteered at the company since 2010 and she helps wherever it is necessary. Karen Hurwitz (Karen’s brother, Ben, is married to Lillie) brought an artistic flare to the company as she taught the participants how to use paints and water colors to create original art pieces. These are used as covers for the note cards and multi-use bags the participants make and sell. “What a thrill to see the joy the participants receive from the sale of their products. And working with my family makes volunteering together even more special!” stated Karen.

When Bettie and Dr. Bernard “Buzzy” Farfel became involved in Jewish Family Service, they likely had no idea they were establishing a legacy for community service that currently spans four generations. Coming to Houston from New York, they quickly became active leaders in numerous organizations. Bettie served as a volunteer receptionist at JFS, while Buzzy, an internal medicine physician, served as president of the Board. Under his leadership, JFS moved from a small rental space to its first building on South Braeswood in l968. Always open to those in need, the Farfel home and their three daughters and their families – Carol and Barry Goodfriend, Linda and Herbert Lesser and Helen and Larry Rose—was a sanctuary to many who needed their help. Carol’s husband, Barry Goodfriend, M.D., served as president of the JFS Board; Linda served as an officer on the JFS Board while Helen’s son-in-law, Rabbi Brenner Glickman, served on the board when he lived in Houston. Additionally, Barry and Carol’s daughter, Cheryl Levy, serves on the executive committee as the JFS “volunteer” Volunteer Coordinator. Under Cheryl’s able leadership, JFS has grown its volunteer base from approximately 15 to nearly 400 people, “through handson recruitment, retention and recognition,” she proclaims. Today, over 100 volunteers regularly assist the agency on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. In recognition of her efforts Cheryl received the JFS Becker Leadership Award in 2000. Added to the family involvement is another JFS president, George Stark, (wife, Lois, is a first cousin to the three Farfel sisters). Their family established the Farfel/ Stark JFS Professional Staff Development Fund, which underwrites the annual Ruth Hutton Fred Lecture. Although the Farfel sisters and their families have been active leaders in a number of civic, congregational and professional organizations, it is their devotion to their parents and their commitment to family and JFS that led them to establish the Bettie and Bernard Farfel Jewish Family Service Award, to recognize individuals and organizations who labor on behalf of Jewish family life. Carol explains, “We are proud that generation after generation of our extended family, including every one of our grandchildren, continues to have a special relationship with JFS.”

For the 2012 year, the volunteers offering service to the Jewish Family Service clients and the community numbered nearly 400 and provided an extraordinary 7,592 hours of service! Seven short years ago when there were 15 volunteers at JFS, following a Strategic Planning Process in 2006, Cheryl Levy was named the (Volunteer) Volunteer Coordinator for JFS, creating a program to fill identified places where volunteers were needed at the agency. JFS is grateful to Houston Endowment, The Lewis and Joan Lowenstein Foundation and The Simmons Foundation for grants funding our volunteer program, which enabled expanded program services to clients and meaningful volunteer service opportunities. Thank you to all who have offered service to the JFS clients and the community on behalf of Jewish Family Service.

For the 100

Anniversary Celebration of Jewish Family Service, the question arose: Who should we honor in this milestone year? As we explored the meaning of this celebration---humility for what was accomplished in the past and having great expectations for the future----it became clear that it wasn’t one person who should be honored; rather, it is a group of individuals, couples and families who have shared their resources to allow JFS to bridge our past into our future. These families have allowed us to respond with greater strength than ever to our community’s needs. By themselves, each is a source of light for our clients. Together, they are our “Bridge to the Future”. th

Celebration of the Century Honorees Joan and Stanford Alexander have been working to stamp out the stigma associated with mental health illness for decades. With vision, patience and wisdom, they enabled Jewish Family Service to provide much needed professional services for individuals with disabilities and their families. The JFS Disability Services Alexander Institute for Inclusion serves as a positive influence for our entire city. Stanford’s influence and support has propelled JFS to greater heights in fundraising and adding Joan’s name to the Chesed Award further elevated its stature.

Velva G. and H. Fred Levine, 2012 Chesed Award recipients, have been at the forefront of the local Jewish community since arriving in Houston in 1974. Dedicated supporters of several organizations in Israel and the Federation’s Community Connections Mission, they are leaders in many non-profit and professional organizations. Their leadership and passion for the work at JFS started with Velva chairing the “Family to Family Program” in the 1980s during the resettling of Jews from the former Soviet Union, and they both now serve as sustainers of the Jewish Chaplaincy Program.

Martha and Donald Freedman are community leaders who are involved in many organizations that help the Jewish people, here and abroad. Locally, Emery/Weiner School is among their many passions. They have chaired JFS’s Reel Hope…A Night at the Movies, and Donald, a past JFS president, led a visionary Strategic Planning Session that identified disabilities services as a critical need. They provide steadfast support at Jewish Family Service, particularly in the area of creating resources for families who need financial aid.

Shirley and Jay Marks, Chairs of JFS’s 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Century, are well-known in the Houston community for their love of music and the arts. Shirley’s involvement with JFS has included many years of service on the Board of Directors, displaying sensible leadership and a strong vision for the agency’s role in our community. With a unique combination of flair and tenacity, they have spearheaded JFS’s most successful fundraising event ever.

Mireille and Harvey Katz are quiet and refined community leaders who have shared resources to strengthen our community, helping both senior adults and the most vulnerable among us. They have been passionate about preserving the history and memories of the Holocaust. They take much pride in the fact that their grandsons became volunteers at Jewish Family Service to provide items for senior adults. Nathan J. Klein’s name has been strongly affiliated with JFS since the early years of the agency. A community leader who saved the lives of displaced persons after WWII by sponsoring their entry and employment into the United States, he and his family continue to dedicate themselves to helping students receive the tools for their success with zero interest student loans and also helps the agency provide the most basic of needs for hundreds and hundreds of Houstonians. The chesed displayed by Nathan J. Klein and his family is legendary

Shirley Toomim, a Chesed Award recipient, along with her husband, David, of blessed memory, has been involved with JFS since the time Ruth Hutton Fred was JFS Executive Director. She has also served on the Houston Jewish Family Foundation as a Trustee for many years. Shirley’s love for JFS, and her commitment to mental health services and care for senior adults, has been transmitted to the next generation in her family, leading Steve Robinson, her son-in-law, to take on the presidency of the agency. Dolores Wilkenfeld, a former Chesed Award recipient, was a founder and is a sustainer of the Jewish Chaplaincy Program, a joint program of The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and Jewish Family Service which brought succor to over 1700 people in 2012. A national Jewish leader in the Reform movement, Dolores has lent her strong voice, style and creativity to many JFS events.

n the past century, families stepped forward to establish endowment funds that today are helping families in our community. With the understanding that these needs will increase in the future, we have turned to today’s families to set aside funds for the next 100 years that will provide a safety net and other vital services. It is immensely gratifying to live in a community where so many have thoughtfully made plans to share their blessings with others. These families will be highlighted during the Celebration of the Century:

Reserve a Journal Page for Your Family Today! Houston Jewish Family Foundation

At the Celebration of the Century on June 2, a journal will be distributed that recognizes those who have made Jewish Family Service and its Houston Jewish Family Foundation a part of their legacy plans. Please consider joining 100 Names for 100 Years making the mitzvah of caring for those who need our help a part of your family’s perpetual legacy.

In August of 2012, due to dire needs for emergency financial aid for our clients, Jewish Family Service’s Board of Directors took the unusual step to dedicate all FRIENDS donations to Financial Aid. In your unprecedented response, you demonstrated why we can all be proud of being a part of this extraordinarily caring community. Thank you to those who responded so generously so that JFS could put food on the table, pay for rent and utilities and stabilize families in crises. Over 430 families sent in donations in a wave of compassion. Linda Burger, JFS CEO, commented, “We were heartened by the outpouring of support. It is clear that people are so grateful for the good they have in their lives and they want to share with others going through trying times.” In response to the ongoing and growing need for basic need assistance, the leadership of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, Lee Wunsch, President and CEO, and Carol Goldberg,

President of the Board, met with JFS leadership to assess how the Federation could garner resources to address this significant community problem. Committed to finding an ongoing solution, they convened community leadership to discuss and strategize for the future, even as they offered resources to close the 2012 gap in funding. The Federation presented JFS with an emergency allocation of $120,000 which, together with the increased JFS FRIENDS campaign, and allocations from the agency’s Bridge Fund, allowed JFS to help over 300 families in 2012. “We were delighted to be able to step in and provide these funds to Jewish Family Service when we learned of this need for financial assistance,” stated Goldberg. Continuing, she said, “We look forward to partnering with JFS in the future to continue to help meet the financial assistance needs in our community.”
