Dear Friend,

A letter from The 2010 Miss Marigold Jordan Davis

Last fall I had one of the best experiences of my life when I entered and then won Pekin‟s Miss Marigold Pageant. It was the first time I had entered a pageant and from the first contestant meeting on, I have had the opportunity to meet new people and experience new things I never imagined. One of those opportunities that have now come my way is the chance to compete at this summer‟s Miss Illinois Scholarship Association Pageant as Miss Pekin. The pageant will be held June 28- July 2 in Marion, IL. The ISA is part of the Miss America organization and awards thousands of dollars in scholarship money each year. The pageant follows the same structure as the Miss America system and I will be competing in Interview, Talent, Swimsuit, and Evening Gown competitions. Although it has been several years now since Pekin sent a representative to the Miss Illinois pageant, we do have a strong history of success (including three former Miss Illinois Queens!) and I am so excited to get our community involved once again. As I mentioned before, the Miss Illinois pageant is a scholarship pageant and as such, I will be competing for scholarship money to help me further my education. I have been accepted to the University of Illinois and will be headed there next fall to study Biology. The pageant also emphasizes the importance of community service and philanthropy by requiring contestants to raise money in support of the Children‟s Miracle Network. In light of that and other expenses I will accrue in order to attend and compete in the nearly week-long competition this summer, I am asking for your support and a donation to help cover those expenses. The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce Marigold Festival Committee has generously supported me already by paying for my pageant entrance fee, but I will still have approximately $2500 in expenses for meals, hotel accommodations for my local pageant director/escort, my wardrobe, and the mandatory CMN donation of at least $300. I have established a separate checking account at Herget Bank and pledge that any money I raise above what is needed for my minimum expenses will be put toward the CMN donation. Please understand that all the money I raise will be used for Miss Illinois expenses or donated to the Children‟s Miracle Network. Additionally, I am eagerly looking for opportunities to play the piano for audiences as a means of practicing for the talent competition. If you know of any such opportunities, please contact me or Shannon Tebben-Sandoval (at 3472408.) I hope you will give careful consideration to my request. I appreciate any support you can give me and I look forward to representing our community well and making Pekin proud this summer! Sincerely, Jordan Davis Miss Marigold/Miss Pekin 2010 Donations may be made payable to “Miss Illinois Fund-raiser” and sent to any Herget Bank location or to Jordan Davis at 1814 Valencia, Pekin, IL, 61554. Thank You!

Only nine members attended the Chamber’s first “Tech and Tell” on March 10th at the Avanti’s Dome. However, based on their enthusiastic feedback, other should make plans to attend future Tech and Tell events. The format of the program was very informal, with an around-the-table presentation and discussion of various technologies. Participants were encouraged to bring their latest gadget, software tip, smart phone, or other technology tools that make them more efficient at work, and then tell the rest of the group about them. The informal format allowed participants to come and go as their schedule allowed. A few participants were there just to learn, and did not bring anything specific to show the group. There were no IT people in attendance. Most were business people who would rate their technical knowledge as average or even below average. What were some of the discussions and presentations? Well, someone brought their brand new Motorola Xoom tablet and gave us a demonstration of the features and how they are using the technology at home and at work. That led to a discussion of tablets in general and included several comments and opinions on iPads and other Android tablets. Someone asked what Google Voice was all about and if anyone was using it productively. There was also a great discussion about QR Codes and how several of the participants are using them to quickly share information. There was a failed attempt to set up a video voice call between two smart devices, and some simple tips on typing numbers and symbols on Android devices and sorting and searching your Outlook emails.

Cloud computing was discussed and one company told how they replaced their mail server with a cloud email service. We also heard about Office 365, which will be Microsoft’s next big cloud product. And finally, we had a live demonstration of an iPhone app and accessory that allows you to swipe a credit card and accept payments. Afterwards we learned that there is also an Android version of the app and accessory available and one of the participants has already ordered it. The next “Tech and Tell” will be on Thursday, April 14th at Avanti’s Dome at 7:30am. Coffee is provided by the Chamber. Reservations are not required, but you could call and let us know what gadget you’ll be bringing so we can promote it. 4

Business After Hours Held Bridgeway hosted the March 3rd Business After Hours and about 50 chamber members attended. By participating in a scavenger hunt, the chamber members learned about the services that Bridgeway provides, including family, residential, vocational, and training services. The 501(c)3 organization has a presence in the Pekin area but is actually a much larger organization, serving an average of 8,900 clients each year with 450 employees in 13 counties in Illinois and Iowa.

Business Before Hours Held About 25 people enjoyed Business BEFORE Hours on Friday, March 11th. Our host was Larry Nelson, who along with Debbie and Karen, served up a great breakfast. We actually met at Pekin Office Solutions, which is right next door to their office. Pekin Office Solutions has individual offices and cubicles available for rent.

The group heard legislative updates from Senators Koehler, Brady and Cultra and they learned from Deb Spencer what it is like to be a lobbyist. The group also toured the Capitol building, was introduced on the House floor by Representative Mike Unes, and visited the Abraham Lincoln Museum.

Biz Barometer The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported nonfarm payroll employment increased nationally by 192,000 in February, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 8.9 percent. Job gains occurred in manufacturing, construction, professional and business services, health care, and transportation and warehousing. Locally, the unemployment stood at 9.6% in Illinois and 10.6% in Pekin at the end of January according to figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The Illinois Department of Revenue reports sales tax disbursements to the City of Pekin were up 8.1% in February, compared to February of 2010. February payments generally represent the sales tax collected in December. For the first quarter of 2011, sales tax disbursements to the City of Pekin are 4.6% ahead of the first three months of 2010. The numbers of homes sold in Pekin during the first two months of 2011 are up 12.5% over the same first two months in 2010. A similar trend can be found in other Tazewell County communities according to information provided by the Peoria Area Association REALTORS. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.5 percent in February on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.1 percent before seasonal adjustment. Though the seasonally adjusted increase in the all items index was broad-based, the energy index was the largest contributor, as the gasoline index continued to rise.
