The May luncheon we had speakers Joyce Black from the Salem Holiday Inn Express and John Purden of the City of Salem Public Work dept. Joyce Black, General Manager of the Holiday Inn, spoke about many of the amenities the new 86 room hotel will offer: an indoor pool, breakfast bar, LED television sets, microwave and refrigerator, a fitness center and even an outdoor patio with a fire pit. Black, a 36 year veteran in the hotel business explained the new “Formula Blue” concepts focuses on being clean, modern and convenient. She also stated how excited she is at the opportunities the new hotel will bring to Salem and its citizens. The hotel will employee between 22 and 25 and will open it’s doors on June 16th.

John Pruden, Director of the City of Salem Public Works Dept. was our second speaker of the day and spoke at length of a new program that will be instituted over the next 5 years. The new program will require water and gas meters to be modified to allow the sending of signals to a hand held unit some distance away. This will save time in the meter reader being able to read several meters in just moments instead of the time it takes to walk to each residence homes, and will also allow consistent readings even in adverse winter conditions. The City Council has allocated $100,000 per year to each, water and gas for the five years. Purden also spoke briefly as to the responsibilities for the Public Works Dept., mentioning the water plant, waste water plant, natural gas dept, streets, and snow removal.

Notes from The Director

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our membership for the outstanding support of the Salem Area Foundation. Your Salem Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, some members also being Foundation members, realized requests for assistance from persons and families facing difficult and sometimes emergency needs were exceeding contributions. As a result Foundation funds were low and the decision was

Salem Area Foundation/ Chamber

made that receipts from sponsorships and ticket sales for the Annual Salem Chamber Customer Appreciation Swim Night would be shared equally with the Foundation. The Salem Chamber is also associated with the Salem Area Foundation in cosponsoring the highly successful Evening of Honors program. Membership response exceeded expectations and the Foundation is greatly appreciative. 100% of the funds

will be used to help residents face unemployment, health, fire or other problems. It is still not too late to add your support if you wish. Sponsorships are still available and $5.00 tickets to the June 17th Swim Night Program can be purchased at the Chamber office at 615 West Main or at the gate the night of the event. Again, thank you for your support.

SWIM NIGHT

This year the Salem Chamber is joining forces with the Salem Foundation for one terrific night of fun for everyone. We will be having our Annual Appreciation Swim Night at the Salem Aquatic Center. There will be sloppy joes, hot dogs, soft drinks & frozen treats. This event is sponsored by friends, supporters and members of the Salem Foundation and Salem Chamber of Commerce. There will be a $5.00 admission charge and tickets can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce office which is located at 615 W. Main Street. The swim night will be held on Friday, June 17 from 6:15 – 9:15 pm. Mark your calendar and come out to help a good cause. If you or your business would like to become a sponsor for this event, please contact the Chamber of Commerce.
