Much controversy exists among college faculty as to what should and should not be covered in the AIS course. To some extent, however, the controversy is being resolved through legislation. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) of 2002 established new corporate governance regulations and standards for public companies registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This wide-sweeping legislation impacts public companies, their management, and their auditors. Of particular importance to AIS students is the impact of SOX on internal control standards and related auditing procedures. Whereas SOX does not define the entire content of the AIS course, it does identify critical areas of study that need to be included for accountants. These topics and more are covered in the chapters of this text. The purpose of this chapter is to place the subject of AIS in perspective for accountants. Toward this end, the chapter is divided into three major sections, each dealing with a different aspect of information systems. The first section explores the...... Words: 13048 - Pages: 53

Chapter 3 Book Solutions for Systems Development and Documentation Techniques (/essay-on/Chapter-3-Book-Solutions-for-Systems-Development-and-Documentation-Techniques/226436) ...B CHAPTER 3 SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT AND DOCUMENTATION TECHNIQUES SUGGESTED ANSWERS TO DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 3.1 Data Flows: merchandise, payment, cash and register tape Date Source: customer Processes: capture sales and payment, give cash and register tape to manager Storage: sales file (register tape), cash register 3.2 It is usually not sufficient to use just one documentation tool. Every tool documents a uniquely important aspect of a given information system. For example, system flowcharts are employed to understand physical system activities including inputs, outputs, and processing. In contrast, data flow diagrams provide a graphic picture of the logical flow of data within an organization. Each alternative is appropriate for a given aspect of the system. As a result, they work together to fully document the nature and function of the information system. 3.3 Similar design concepts include the following: • Both methods require an initial understanding of the system before actual documentation begins. This insures that the system is properly represented by the diagram. • Both measures require the designer to identify the elements of the system and to identify the names and relations associated with the elements. • Both methods encourage the designer to flowchart only the regular flows of information and not to be concerned with unique situations. • Both approaches require more...... Assignment 1: Inventory Management Systems (/essay-on/Assignment-1-Inventory-Management-Systems/332531) ...Assignment 1: Inventory Management Systems Systems Analysis and Development April 18, 2014 My sister owns a small clothing store. During a conversation at a family dinner, she mentioned her frustration with having to manually track and reorder high demand items. She would like an automated system but has a very small budget. Manually tracking orders is not an effective way to do business. A good example would be if you were tracking inventory using EXCEL you could accidentally delete the file, or a virus could destroy your system. Pen and paper tracking is absolutely not efficient, and it leaves a lot of room for human error. The purpose of inventory management is to provide uninterrupted production, sales, and/or customer service levels at the minimum cost. Since for many companies inventory is the largest item in the current assets category, inventory problems can and do contribute to losses or even business failures (What is inventory management, n.d.). Inventory control is important for the largest companies, but it is equally important for the smallest businesses as well. For instance, my sister’s small clothing store needs to be able to track its best-selling items along with its slow moving items. It needs to keep a higher on-hand count of the best-selling items, so that customers will not be disappointed if the item that they are looking for is not in-stock. A good inventory system creates efficiency and increases profits. My sister’s budget is very limited....... Words: 1013 - Pages: 5

Would you, or any organization, ever produce information if its expected costs exceeded its benefits? If so, provide some examples. If not, why not? Most organizations produce information only if its value exceeds its cost. However, there are two situations where information may be produced even if its cost exceeds its value. a. Therefore, organizations may produce information that they expect will produce benefits in excess of its costs, only to be disappointed after the fact. b. Production of the information may be mandated by either a government agency or a private organization. Examples include the tax reports required by the IRS and disclosure requirements for financial reporting. 1.2 Can the characteristics of useful information listed in Table 1-1 be met simultaneously? Or does achieving one mean sacrificing another? Several of the criteria in Table 1.1 can be met simultaneously. For example, more timely information is also likely to be more relevant.
