AIRPORT HISTORY

September 19th, 1944 – the foundation date of the Moldavian independent squadron and the official date of the Civil Aviation Foundation in Moldova. First flights geography: Moscow, Sankt-Petersburg, Kiev, Minsk, Caucasus and Crimea. 1987 - the transportation capacity reached 1 mln passengers, the capital of Moldova became a knot between more than 80 cities of the Soviet Union and was connecting more than 20 cities of the republic. May 31st, 1995 - Chisinau Airport has obtained the status of international one. 2010 - Chisinau International Airport served 937030 passengers. The maximum passenger flow was recorded on August,28 constituting 4813 people. The increase of 15.81% in passenger flow was achieved in 2010 in comparison with 2009.New operating airlines: Lufthansa, UtAir, Aerosvit, AtlasJet. New Destinations: Munich, Kiev, Varna, Bodrum, Surgut, Istanbul (Sabiha Gokchen Airport), Sofia, Sharm el Sheikh.

 Passenger movements are estimated to record 1.3 million in 2014, representing an average annual growth of 7.4%p.a between 2008 and 2014.  In 2025 KIV is estimated to handle almost 2.7 million passengers, representing an average annual growth of 6.7%p.a between 2014 and 2025

Chisinau International Airport (IATA code: KIV, ICAO code: LUKK) is the main

international airport of the Republic of Moldova, main gateway of the Republic of Moldova and the nations premier airport. The airport provides access to all the benefits of the global aviation network. Being ideally located 14 km south of centre of the Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, it is a vital economic hub and a major job creator for Moldova.

The Airport has good road connections with the city and the regions of the country. It is used by traditional regular passenger airlines. It is also the hub of the flag carrier Air Moldova. The airport area is located on a raised plateau, approximately 100m above sea level in an urban/light-industrial/semi-rural area. S.E. Chisinau International Airport is a fully corporatized legal entity in compliance with Moldovan Law on State Enterprises. Chisinau Airport operates 24 hours a day and is used for commercial regular and general aviation operations. It consists of one single operational runway (RWY 08/26), a system of eight taxiways and a linear apron located in the northern part of the airport. Chisinau Airport has in total three terminals consisting of a passenger terminal, VIP terminal and an Official Delegations Hall.

Airfield The airfield consists of a runway, a well-developed nearly parallel taxiway system, and an apron. The reference code of the Chisinau airport’s runway is 4C, in accordance with ICAO Annex 14.

Runway Chisinau Airport has one runway. The runway 08/26 has a length of 3,590 m and a width of 45 m.

ILS landing system The distribution of the landing direction of the runway is relatively balanced. The runway is equipped with an ILS CAT II system from landing direction 08 and CAT I from landing direction 26. Runway threshold 08 is equipped for ILS CAT II with a length of 870m of the approach lighting system. The ILS for threshold 08 is equipped with a DVOR. Runway threshold 26 is equipped for ILS CAT I with a 899 m long approach lighting system.

Runway pavement Runway pavement According to the Moldovan Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) the pavement bearing strength is PCN 59/R/A/X/T. The bearing strength number summarizes the following information:  PCN number: The PCN number indicates that an aircraft with an aircraft classification number (ACN) equal to or less than the reported PCN can operate on the pavement subject to any limitation on the tire pressure, or aircraft all-up mass for specified aircraft types. Presently, the maximum types of aircrafts operating regularly at Chisinau Airport are Airbus A 320 (ACN between 40 and 46) and Boeing 737 (ACN between 37 and 43). Apron The apron is divided as follows: the main passenger apron, the cargo apron, the maintenance apron and the apron owned and operated by third party. It has 33 parking positions.

Airport Fire-Fighting category Chisinau Airport is classified as category 6 as per Annex 14 ICAO and Airport Service manual Part 1, Firefighting. The existing equipment meets the requirements of category 7. The rescue team encompasses one ambulance, one medical kit, one technical kit and one emergency operation centre. The fire fighting team consists of two new and three old fire –fighting trucks.

Training and Emergency According to ICAO, regular trainings are held for the employees on safety of work, emergency exercises, fire protection and fire fighting. Besides, the specific trainings are held every two years in collaboration with Civil Protection and Occupational Safety Division. The airport has safety management system. In this respect, manuals and procedures concerning the safety airport operations have been elaborated. In addition, an Airport Emergency Plan has been drown up. The objective of such plan is to save lives, minimize the effect of the emergency situation, maintain normal aircraft operations and switch the aerodrome to its normal operational status as quickly as possible, according to three important concepts:  Be prepared, by defining procedures and assigning responsibilities  Follow these procedures in a real emergency situation or during an exercise  Learn from the experience gained during emergency situations or exercises

Safety and Security At the Chisinau Airport, a basic level of security is required, under normal operational conditions. In addition, operational measures should be implemented during the periods of high tension. Safety and security procedures should be carried out to facilitate a safe operation of the airport. At Chisinau Airport, a dedicated department is in charge of the airport safety and security.

Main components of the Chisinau Airport Modernization Project:  reconstruction and extension of the airside facilities including: - runway - taxiways - apron  refurbishment and modernisation of aviation ground lighting, including apron power supply and installation of stationary aerodrome power supply for aircrafts; electrical equipment modernisation of the transformer substations and modernisation of the drainage system procurement of aerodrome equipment

 The Chisinau Airport’s Master Plan was developed.  Detailed Technical Design was elaborated .  On the stage of the Construction works, the interested companies were pre-qualified and the tender offers are in the process of examination.  Chisinau International Airport is expecting for a 400-450 thousand grant for the implementation of the Energy Management System (EMS) which is the part of the Modernization Project II.
