Chris Cox Signs With Arizona Diamondbacks
CHRIS COX SIGNS WITH ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
Former Canisius baseball player Chris Cox has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cox was previously with the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League.
Cox made 41 appearances in his career with Canisius, working as a starter and also out of the bullpen. As a senior during the 2011 season, Cox made nine appearances out of the bullpen and was 1-1 with two saves and a 0.69 earned run average. Cox had 14 strikeouts n those 13 innings and finished third in Canisius history in strikeouts per nine innings. As a starter in 2010, Cox went 4-1 in seven MAAC starts and threw a complete game against Fairfield on May 1, 2010.
Cox appeared in 36 games with the Capitales. The 6-foot-1 righthander went 1-2 in 44.1 innings, recording 36 strikeouts as a set-up man for the Capitales, who won the league championship.
Cox was rated as the No. 2 prospect in independent baseball by Baseball America following the 2012 season. The publication said Cox "showed excellent velocity as a set-up man for Quebec. He sat at 92-94 mph and touched 95 with his two-seam fastball."
Cox was a 39th-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. The St. George, Ontario native is the second Golden Griffin to sign a minor-league contract with a MLB team in the past few months. Ryan Fennell signed a minor-league contract with the Cincinnati Reds in August, bringing the total of players associated with Canisius baseball to either be selected in the MLB Draft or sign a contract with a MLB organinzation to 10.
