Christmas Opportunities Thousands of families in the Greater Augusta Area struggle to provide Christmas gifts and toys to their children. The Salvation Army, working collaboratively with our community, provides these families with a wonderful Christmas. This year, we invite you to join us in continuing this tradition!

Angel Tree Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmastime. The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels. They placed the cards on a Christmas tree at the mall to allow shoppers to select children to help. Thanks to the Whites, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year. Three years later, when the Whites were transferred to Nashville, Tennessee, Angel Tree was launched in Music during the 1982 Christmas season. WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ol' Opry, came on board that year as the first Angel Tree co-sponsor in the U.S. Because of the on-air promotion on WSM in Nashville, as well as national publicity on CNN and the Larry King Show, news of Angel Tree spread across the country like wild fire. BELL RINGING Bell Ringing at the Red Kettle The Salvation Army is widely known for its outreach during the Christmas season. Since 1891, our iconic red kettles have been a familiar Salvation Army tradition. Money raised through these kettles provides much needed funding for The Salvation Army's free programs throughout the year, and we depend on local volunteers to ring bells at various kettle locations to encourage these donations. Our kettle season begins with our Kettle KickOff Event in early November and ends by Christmas Eve. Volunteers are needed Monday- Saturday in a variety of locations throughout the Greater Augusta Area. Individuals, churches, schools, businesses, and other organizations can sign up to ring for shifts, whole days, or for an entire season. There are so many ways to make this an exciting event for your team: bring posters, decorate Christmas hats or sweaters, sing carols or bring your instruments to get holiday shoppers in the Christmas Spirit! Get creative! We'll provide all of your supplies and drop them off at your location for your shift! Make a donation at RedKettleReason and help #fightforgood To sign up as a Volunteer Bell Ringer contact the Volunteer Coordinator at: 706.434.3185. Red Kettle Campaign MATCH Sponsor Sponsor a Kettle this Christmas with a matching gift challenge dollar-for- dollar! Challenge kettle donors with the opportunity to double their gift by sponsoring a kettle with a match up to a dollar level that you choose. The Salvation Army’s Red Kettles are one of the most highly recognized symbols of benevolence during the Christmas season. A great opportunity for your business to benefit from that visibility, and support our community at the same time. We will display your business, organization or family name on the kettle stand letting everyone know you’ve sponsored that kettle and matching the gifts. Choose to ring the bell at your MATCH kettle, with your employees wearing Company shirts or name tags. For more information on how to match call John Sebby, Salvation Army Development Director, at 706.434.3177 or email [email protected] Christmas Warehouse As Christmas nears, food, toys and stockings will fill the Salvation Army Christmas Warehouse to be distributed to thousands of local families in need. We need lots of volunteers to work various shifts throughout the week. Come be one of Santa's Helpers! Volunteers play an integral part in sorting, organizing, bagging, and distributing these gifts.
