City of San Antonio celebrates International Women’s Day students in San Antonio. The mayor and city manager offered welcoming remarks and Catherine Nixon Cooke, author of “Juan O’Gorman: A Confluence of Civilizations,” delivered a keynote address to remind women that all dreams are possible. While the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women focuses on a number of issues affecting our community, education remains a key focus of its efforts. “This is a great opportunity for us to support young women in getting the educational foundational background they need to achieve their dreams and become leaders in our community. I am proud of the work the commission has done,” Mayor Taylor told La Prensa. International Women’s Day is a global celebration highlighting the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the world. This year’s theme, Mayor Ivy Taylor, along with City of San Antonio officials, hosted International Wom- “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 en’s Day Luncheon on Thursday afternoon. by 2030,” aims to increase participation in the workforce and to address gender-based income inequality. Currently, only 50 percent of working age women are represented in the labor force globally compared to 76 percent of men in data provided by the United Nations (UN). Measures for achieving that end also include a gender pay gap currently at 24 percent globally, making the current annual pay for women what men’s salaries were a decade ago. The UN’s agenda is to recognize women’s often inadequate maternity leave and uncompensated roles of stayat-home parents; address the gender gaps in leadership, entrepreneurship and development of stringent legislation against sexual assault; and ensure gender-responsive economic policies for job creation, poverty reduction and sustainable, inclusive growth. Sculley echoed the Mayor’s sentiment that women could start lifting each other up one

step at a time. “For the past decade, the [City of San Antonio] has supported and recognized International Women’s Day,” stated Sculley. “We celebrate the achievement of International Women’s Day, connecting women around the world and inspiring them to reach their full potential. [We] recognize this powerful contribution locally and worldwide.” Formally “International Working Women’s Day,” the holiday originated on Feb. 28, 1909 in New York after the 1908 strike of the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. An estimated 15,000 workers marched and demanded social and political rights. Five years later, March 8 became the day chosen because it landed on a Sunday, a day off for a majority of women who were ready to participate in marches or other events. More than a century has passed since then, and there is still progress to be made for all the strides thus far.

IDEA Public Schools honor namesakes of three newest campuses

By Jennifer Flores Last week, Rolando Posada, IDEA Public Schools San Antonio executive director; Tom Torkelson, CEO of IDEA Public Schools, and IDEA San Antonio campus and community leaders gathered to honor the namesakes of three new IDEA campuses at IDEA San Antonio’s annual luncheon. The honorees include the Najim Family Foundation, the George W. Brackenridge Foundation and the Ewing Halsell Foundation. During the luncheon, IDEA staff, students and supporters highlighted the tremendous student success at IDEA San Antonio and the continued commitment to make “College For All” a reality for more San Antonio students. At the luncheon, community leaders and IDEA supporters also gathered to celebrate

IDEA’s commitment to providing a high-quality education to San Antonio families. IDEA Public Schools will expand from 14 schools to 20 schools in San Antonio by end of 2017 and 30 campuses by 2022. In August 2017, IDEA San Antonio will serve over 9,000 students in grades Pre-K-11. This growth would not be possible without the support of foundations and donors. “We have proven to a community that has long been known for underachievement, that everything is possible when the adults in the system get it right,” said Posada. “The commitment that the San Antonio community has shown to IDEA students is remarkable. It is because of their commitment, that our schools continue to provide a high-quality education to more and more students each year.”

IDEA Public Schools announced in November that it will dedicate and name three of its new campuses, scheduled to open in August 2017, in honor of San Antonio philanthropists and IDEA supporters. The continued support of the Harvey E. Najim and the Najim Family Foundation, the George W. Brackenridge Foundation and the Ewing Halsell Foundation will help fund the construction of the new campuses. “The future of San Antonio, the future of Texas, the future of our country lies with these children”, said Harvey E. Najim, IDEA Public Schools donor and president of the Harvey E. Najim Foundation. “I am honored to be affiliated with IDEA Public Schools as they continue to impact the lives of children across Texas.” The Brackenridge Foundation was instrumental in IDEA Pub-

lic Schools’ expansion to San Antonio. They are committed to supporting the expansion of high-performing charter school networks and value IDEA’s record of results and impact on students from low-income communities. “When we learned about the success IDEA Public Schools was having in the Rio Grande Valley, we knew we had to support their expansion to San Antonio,” said Victoria Rico at The Brackenridge Foundation. “IDEA has proven to the San

Antonio community that student success is attainable, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to see students in our community to and through college.” The Ewing Halsell Foundation was also essential to supporting IDEA’s growth in San Antonio more than four years ago. “We could not be prouder of what IDEA Public Schools has brought to children and families in San Antonio,” said Jackie Moczygemba at the Ew-

ing Halsell Foundation. “We are humbled that IDEA has chosen to name the capstone school of their 2012 expansion plans after the Ewing Halsell Foundation. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for Texans, and those in the San Antonio community, and IDEA is doing just that.” IDEA San Antonio is a network of 14 schools currently serving over 5,000 students in grades K – 10. Why it’s important not to ignore shoulder pain

By Dr. Mark De Anda Shoulder pain can make basic things like putting on a shirt, combing your hair or reaching for your wallet, difficult. Even cooking and cleaning can be a challenge. If we have shoulder pain, what do we do? How do we understand it and how can we fix it? In the next two weeks, I will explain what the shoulder is and how it works. Then I will talk about the most common causes of shoulder pain that my patients have. Let’s get started with the Rotor Cuff. What is the Rotator Cuff? The Rotator Cuff is found underneath our large shoulder muscles. The Rotator Cuff muscles are four deep muscles in the shoulder that do only one thing; they stabilize the shoulder as our arm moves. They allow the arm to move freely without damaging the internal parts of the shoulder joint. They attach to the head of the shoulder bone in different directions to stabilize it in those specific areas. If muscles are not working right or are a little weak, it can cause big damage to internal soft parts of the shoulder joint. So, what

about that shoulder blade on our back, how does it work? Think of the shoulder blade as the helper for the shoulder joint. The shoulder blade takes a lot of stress off of the shoulder joint and does a lot of work for it. Together, they allow the arm to reach out and above our head. So the shoulder is actually made up of two parts, the arm bone and the shoulder blade bone. If the shoulder blade is not moving correctly or if it is weak, it will put more stress on the shoulder joint and cause pain. The muscle around the shoulder blade attaches to our backs and hold our shoulder blade steady as we reach out with our arm. So, if the shoulder blade is not steady or moving smoothly, reaching out and doing work will be painful or difficult. Other muscle will work overtime and may become overworked. The two most common muscles that become overworked are the top muscle of the Rotator Cuff and the Bicep muscle. If these muscles become overworked, it will be squeezed to the point of tearing or ripping. In severe cases it can rip completely and may require surgery to regain

normal movement. The good news is, if you catch it early on, movement can be restored completely with a physical therapy. A physical therapist that specializes in shoulder pain can test muscles in the shoulder and can pinpoint what muscles are causing your shoulder pain. Pain may not only be coming from the shoulder joint. If you have pain that travels from the shoulder into the arm, forearm or hand, it could also be a problem in the neck as well. When the shoulder blade is not moving steady other muscles (such as the neck muscles) develop tightness and start to pinch on the nerve roots that continue to run down our arm. That is why some of my patients with shoulder pain also have pain down the arm as well. It is very important not to ignore shoulder pain. My name is Dr. Mark De Anda and I’m a doctor of physical therapy located in central San Antonio. Call (210) 314-6725 and schedule an appointment today! I can conform exactly what causes your pain and I will also give you a written plan of exactly what a successful treatment looks like.

No somos grabadoras.

Just a Thought: mayoral, City Council races O n c e again, we are currently in the midst of a City Council and mayoral race in San Steve Walker Antonio. Unlike the presidential, congressional and state races held in even years, City Council and mayoral races are conducted in the odd years. Since it is 2017, it time to elect a mayor and 10 City Council people for a two year term. Election Day is May 6. Since the voters cast their ballots in a referendum last cycle to raise the council’s pay to $46,000 a year from $20 a week, we now have 79 candidates on the May ballot – 38 of the candidates are Hispanic. A number of the incumbent Council members are Hispanic. Currently, District 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are represented by Hispanics. They include: Roberto Treviño, Rebecca Viagran, Rey Saldaña, Shirley Gonzales, Ray Lopez and Cris Medina, respectively. Five of

them minus Councilman Ray Lopez are running for re-election. Councilman Ray Lopez is term limited from running for another term having served the maximum four terms. With 14 candidates running for mayor, six of the candidates are Hispanic. They include: Nathan Madrid, Felicio Flores, John Martinez Velasquez, Manuel Medina, Gerald Ponce and Tony Diaz. All six District 1 candidates are Hispanic to include: Robert Feria, Adrian Flores, Ross Trevino, Lauro Bustamante, Michael Montano and incumbent Roberto Treviño. Of the four candidates running in District 2, none of them are Hispanic. District 3 has seven candidates, five Hispanics to include: Jessica Guerrero, Rebecca Viagran, Nathan Carrizales, Sylvia Don and Ismael Reyes. District 4 has three candidates, all Hispanic, to include Rey Saldaña, Rey Guevara and Johnny Arredondo. District 5 has six candidates

all who are Hispanic. The list includes: Cynthia Cavazos, David Yanez, Dolores Sotomayor, Richard Montez, Daniel Lopez and Shirley Gonzales. District 6 has eight candidates of which four are Hispanic. They include; Cris Medina, Marco Reyes, Alfredo Esparza Colunga, Ana Sandoval and Michelle Dalbis Robleto. District 8 has six candidates with three Hispanics to include: Manny Palaez, Pat Stout and Tony Valdivia. District 9 has 10 candidates but only two Hispanics, Sandra Martinez-Deyarmond and Marco Barros. Finally, District 10 has 10 candidates but only three Hispanics to include: John Alvarez, Celeste Montez-Tidwell and Andrew Padilla. For you History buffs who may have forgotten: it took until 1870 to pass the 15th amendment to guarantee the right to vote to all men 21 and older regardless of race or ethnic background. That

included freed slaves. Imagine the excitement in 1920 when women over 21 were finally allowed to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment. Today, 52 percent of the eligible voters are women and more women are being elected to serve. In 1971, while I was still serving in Vietnam, the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age across the nation to 18. In 1982, the Voting Rights Act Amendments allowed further provisions and added Americans with disabilities, voters not able to read and write and those not fluent in English to insure their freedoms. When you go to the polls remember your vote does count and can make a difference on who wins or loses. You are encouraged to vote on May 6 or vote early in late April. It is your choice. Be a part of the process and go vote! And as always, what I write is “Just a Thought.” Steve Walker is a Vietnam Veteran, former Journalist and Justice of the Peace.

Humberto Caspa, Ph.D. es profesor e investigador de Economics On The Move.

L.C. Prayer To St. Jude

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of difficult cases, of things almost despaired of, Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Intercede with God for me that He brings visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly - (make your request here) - and that I may praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor granted me by God and to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.

By CONCACAF Communications The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced the group stage matches and schedule for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, filling out the calendar for this summer’s marquee regional national team championship. San Antonio will host a double-header in the Alamodome on July 16 featuring Curacao vs. Mexico and Jamaica vs. El Salvador. The announcement of the event matchups revealed the path to the regional championship for each of the 12 nations participating in this July’s competition and took place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., which will be the site of the championship game on July 26. “With the groups now determined, we have a full look at the schedule of Gold Cup matches to be played this July,” said CONCACAF General Secretary Philippe Moggio. “With so many exciting matches set to take place in great stadiums from coast to coast, culminating at Levi’s Stadium on July 26, it’s going to be an exciting summer of football for fans across the region.”

The San Antonio match featuring Curacao vs Mexico (0-11) offers two teams that have never met in a match prior to the 2017 Gold Cup. However, there is history between the two teams when Curacao was known as Netherlands Antilles. In 1961, the teams played two World Cup Qualifier matches as part of the final qualifying round. Mexico ultimately qualified over Costa Rica and Netherlands Antilles. This CONCACAF special will likely not be replayed outside of the Gold Cup. The San Antonio match featuring Jamaica vs. El Salvador (10-6-5) will see two new coaches face off. Jamaica boasts 10 wins and six draws in 21 matches against their Salvadorian opponents, including at Group Stages on three occasions, in 1998, 2009, and on the way to the final in 2015.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Irish cuisine By Christina Acosta [email protected] St. Patrick’s Day is a popular holiday filled with rich Irish culture and history. St. Patrick’s Day or the Feast of St. Patrick originated after the death of the foremost patron saint of Ireland on March 17, 460 A.D. In the early 17th century, St. Patrick’s Day was officially celebrated as a Christian feast day and celebrates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Today, the holiday celebrates Irish culture and heritage with public parades, shamrocks and céilithe (Scottish or Irish social gathering that includes Gaelik folk music and dancing). This year, I would like for my readers to look beyond wearing

green and the drink menu at a local bar/restaurant – and try the Irish cuisine. Here are a couple of Irish dishes to try in the kitchen, courtesy of Food Network. Vegetable Shepherd’s Pie Total Time: 1 hour 6 minutes 4 Servings • 6 medium Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and diced • Kosher salt • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 large onion, diced • 3 large carrots, cut into 1/2inch chunks • 2 stalks celery, cut into 1/2inch chunks • 1 bunch baby turnips, halved or quartered if large • 6 cloves garlic, minced • Freshly ground pepper • 1/2 bunch fresh parsley, leaves chopped (stems reserved)

• 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter • 3/4 cup chopped veggie burgers or vegetarian protein crumbles • 2/3 cup milk or half-and-half Grated parmesan cheese, for sprinkling (optional) Preheat the broiler. Cover the potatoes with water in a pot; season with salt, cover and boil until the potatoes are fork-tender, 15 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a stovetop casserole dish or shallow enamel pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion, carrots, celery, turnips and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and cook until the vegetables brown, 8 minutes. Add 1 1/2 cups cooking liquid from the

potatoes to the casserole dish. Lower the heat and scrape up any browned bits with a wooden spoon. Tie the parsley stems with twine and add to the casserole. Cover and simmer until the vegetables are tender, 8 minutes. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons butter and the chopped veggie burgers and warm through, 5 minutes. Remove the parsley stems and stir in the chopped parsley. Keep warm. Drain the potatoes and mash with the remaining 3 tablespoons butter and the milk; season with salt and pepper and spoon over the casserole. Sprinkle with parmesan, if desired. Broil until golden brown, 5 minutes. Irish Soda Bread Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

1 loaf • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for currants • 4 tablespoons sugar • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch dice • 1 3/4 cups cold buttermilk, shaken • 1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest • 1 cup dried currants Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the butter and mix on low speed until

the butter is mixed into the flour. With a fork, lightly beat the buttermilk, egg and orange zest together in a measuring cup. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture. Combine the currants with 1 tablespoon of flour and mix into the dough. It will be very wet. Dump the dough onto a wellfloured board and knead it a few times into a round loaf. Place the loaf on the prepared sheet pan and lightly cut an X into the top of the bread with a serrated knife. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean. When you tap the loaf, it will have a hollow sound. Cool on a baking rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Lum mentioned that millions of sharks die each day because people cut of their fins for food and eventually die in the ocean. “We want to raise awareness about this and that is what we are doing,” he

Nearly two years after entering the brick-and-mortar retail market, NYX Professional Makeup has recently opened its 100th store at The Shops at La Cantera, the first in San Antonio. The milestone achievement was perfectly positioned for beauty junkies to shop the complete line of affordable and professional makeup. For the 100th opening, the brand wanted the 1,497-square-foot San Antonio store to include digital technology, as well as hands-on educational environment, providing customers with a memorable and convenient makeup experience. In keeping with its heritage as a truly digital brand, the La Cantera location features a wide series of innovative technologies including an in-store beauty bar, an interactive makeup station featuring custom video tutorials, a trend-based lip bar and a shadow bar. For Nathalie Kristo, general manager in

marketing and global business development at NYX Professional Makeup, this was a milestone that will cater to the customers’ needs. “To finally reach San Antonio and for it to be the 100th store around the world, is a milestone that we have reached in a good pace,” Kristo told La Prensa. “It makes me very happy to be here and to see what trends San Antonio women are into, whether it is lip liner or eye shadow. We are happy to be here to give them more.” The makeup brand originated in 1999 in Los Angeles and was named after the Greek goddess who ruled the night and symbolized beauty and power. For the past 16 years, the brand has been recognized for high-quality, professional makeup at affordable prices. A leader in the global color cosmetics industry, NYX Professional Makeup is defined by exceptional quality products with rich pigments and a high payoff. Featuring a range of classical, seasonal and ontrend cosmetics, the makeup brand is a must-have among

beauty enthusiasts as well as professional makeup artists. The brand is available in over 70 countries at thousands of retailers consisting of specialty beauty and fashion stores, freestanding shops, beauty supply stores and even online. In fact, North Star Mall will also open its doors to the second NYX store in San Antonio later this month. For Kristo, this is an opportunity for makeup junkies to try new items that will have their faces ready for spring. “This is indeed the store that makeup enthusiasts needed in San Antonio. There are a lot of products to choose from, especially with spring coming along. Our new Wisteria lipstick is more daring, but fashion forward,” advised Kristo. “There is also the shadow palette that brings bright colors that are form the 80s. This spring, bright is in for a low price.” NYX Professional Makeup is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www. nyxcosmetics.com/nyxretail.

First ever NY Dog Film Festival comes to San Antonio Special to La Prensa Following its overwhelming success for two years in New York City, and its national tour to 10 cities in 2016, the first-ever NY Dog Film Festival will be traveling to 15 cities in 2017, landing on May 13 in San Antonio, which is the home of the nonprofit sponsor the Petco Foundation, whose goal is to help every animal live its best life. The mission of the NY Dog Film Festival and Founder/ Director Tracie Hotchner is to share her love of dogs with a program of short films that entertain and inspire while supporting a local animal welfare organization, which in San Antonio will be the Animal Defense League, which will receive a portion of each ticket. What’s better than the concept of a dog film festival? How about a BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog) film festival?! The Tobin Center will make history with this first ever “dog-friendly event for friendly dogs,” welcoming

well-behaved pups to join their human companions at the outdoor screening arranged on the Will Naylor Smith Riverwalk Plaza for the ultimate canine-centric experience. Festival-goers will have a chance to take photos on the Green Carpet, even if they don’t bring along a dog! On the evening of Saturday, May 13, dog lovers can experience the entire NY Dog Film Festival by attending both of the two completely different programs at 7 and 9 p.m. Perfect for a Saturday night date, while appropriate for dog lovers of all ages, the two programs each feature a different medley of documentary, animated and live-action short canine-themed films by filmmakers from around the world. The films illuminate human-canine love and are uplifting, with happy outcomes. Each program runs approximately 75 minutes. Hotchner, a well-known pet wellness advocate and author of “The Dog Bible: Everything Your Dog Wants You to Know,” will fly cross-country

from her home in Bennington, Vermont to San Antonio. She’ll be at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts to bring local dog aficionados together to share a communal experience of watching short films that celebrate the remarkable bond between people and dogs. “I’m delighted to bring animal lovers together in San Antonio to experience the many ways that people love and need their dogs, while recognizing the Animal Defense League’s great work in bringing them together,” said Hotchner. “This offers dog lovers a joyful opportunity to fulfill a ‘bucket list’ dream to share a movie date with their dogs, the ultimate canine-centric experience. The beautiful Tobin Center for the Performing Arts loves dogs as much as we do and is welcoming them to the outdoor Plaza to make the whole experience even more exciting.” Hotchner is also the host/ producer of 10 pet talk radio shows on her Radio Pet Lady Network (including her

award-winning NPR show “Dog Talk”). “We are grateful to have had a grant from the Petco Foundation in 2016, which made the first traveling year possible, and for the generous support from K9 Advantix II from Bayer, which also supports K9s for Warriors. The festival includes two short films which show the mission of K9’s for Warriors, which exemplifies the ultimate celebration of the human-canine bond in their work pairing shelter dogs they have trained as companions for veterans struggling with PTSD,” added Hotchner. The Festival is comprised of two separate programs, of animated, documentary and narrative shorts from around the world. Program 1 – “Second Chances” (77 minutes) Twelve films that include “Game of Bones” from Australia, which re-imagines the popular television series of a similar name and stars the director’s own rescued Labrador see Film Festival on page 8

Film Festival...continued from page 7 “El Puma” relanza sencillo junto a Chayanne as the heroine; “Useful Dog Tricks,” a fun film with a Jack Russell Terrier who shows the myriad ways a dog can help around the house; and the deeply moving “A Boy and His Dog,” an English documentary featuring a very little boy with big medical challenges, whose family adopts a very big dog, whose own physical challenges bring them joyfully together.

her universe; and the uplifting documentary “Second Chances,” about dogs who are paired with imprisoned women, who train them to become service dogs, changing lives on both ends of the leash.
