Though many elements within the people are echoing disappointments regarding the 100-day-program of the United Indonesia Cabinet II, but the massive demonstrations on the streets planned for January 28 won't be able to put the SBY-Boediono administration under presurre. This statement was expressed by Sukardi Rinakit from the Soegeng Sarjadi Syndicate (SSS) during a discussion on "Evaluating the 100 Day Program of the Cabinet on Political, Economical, Legal Aspects", in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The social elements that consist of NGOs and university students need at least three capitals: network, financial support, and military support. If those three aren't met then the January 28 act will end up the same as the World Antigraft Commemoration act on last December 9, 2009. "It will come to the same end as the December 9 demo. The network was available. But that wasn't enough. Especially since there was no businessman who'd fund it and there was no military support," said Sukardi.

He explained that the December 9 demo came to nothing because it lacked funding and military support. For the January 28 demo, the same is happening.

Sukardi stated that businessmen wouldn't fund the demonstrators because they're concerned that the chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Hatta Rajasa, who is also the coordinating minister of economy, and Aburizal Bakrie (nicknamed Ical), the chairman of Golkar party, would take advantage of those acts. "For them, if it's an advantage for Ical and Hatta, then what for?"

Sukardi detects that a similar issue is happening in the military. Currently, the military, though disliking SBY's leadership style, but they can't do anything else since there's no other alternative leader.

Without those two factors, Sukardi is sure that the January 28 demo won't worry President Yudhoyono. "Without those (two factors), then there's nothing. Actually nothing's happening out there."

Harga tertinggi mencapai 4.000 dollar AS untuk dua tiket, sedangkan penawaran terendah 475 dollar AS untuk dua tiket. "Saya mendengarkan lagu-lagu mereka sejak saya berusia 13 tahun," sambungnya. Monday, 25 January 2010 Google Trikes to Blaze 'Street View' Trail off Road

Google wants every nook and cranny of Australia covered on its Google Maps Street View service and to make that happen it will unleash an army of cyclists to capture images off the beaten track and in pedestrian-only locations. The company is seeking suggestions from Australians for cultural areas, natural wonders and “hidden gems” it should explore. At Sydney's Taronga Zoo today, the search giant revealed that its cars with specially mounted cameras haven't been enough to fully capture the country's delights, such as the zoo, national parks and Sydney Harbour. So it has recruited cyclists “on the basis of quads of steel” and will send them out around the country on 110-kilogram tricycles mounted with a 360-degree Street View camera and GPS system. It is one of the first times Google has used the “Street View Trikes” in the southern hemisphere. It has previously used them to take images of South Africa ahead of the 2010 football World Cup, the US, Britain and other parts of Europe. The trikes are ideal for reaching parks and trails, theme parks and zoos, malls, university campuses and other landmarks. The company has already uploaded detailed close-up images from inside Legoland and Sea World in the US. In Australia, the trikes will begin by taking high resolution street-level imagery of Taronga Zoo but after that Google is relying on the public to suggest the next stops. Its website, google.com.au/trike, is accepting suggestions until February 8 in the categories City Life, Cultural Areas, Natural Wonders and Hidden Gems. Google, which still maintains it will only photograph public places and will blur faces, has already nominated Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens and Rottnest Island off the coast of Western Australia. “The Street View Trike will help us to create an ever more comprehensive virtual atlas of Australia,” Google Australia's engineering manager, Raul Vera, said. “We're lucky enough to live in a country with some of the most spectacular natural environments and architectural features on the globe, and the trike will allow us to get off-road to share these marvels with people around Australia and the world.” Taronga Zoo's general manager of marketing, guest and commercial operations, Paul Davies, said: “For the first time ever, anyone with internet access across the globe can see the amazing animals Taronga cares for and be inspired to help our conservation efforts to protect wildlife.” The Google imagery collected by the trikes will be live later this year. In November last year, Google sent its Street View fleet of Holden Astras back on the road in Australia to update and improve its imagery of the country. The new images have yet to be placed on the site. Posted by cky666 at 10:40 0 comments Labels: about, blaze, google, info, infobycky, newest, news, off, road, street, trail, trikes, view, what

Sunday, 24 January 2010 Consumers Being 'Abused' by Text Message Price Rort Australians are paying the highest prices in the world for text messages, industry experts say. And texts cost the mobile networks practically nothing but earn them millions in profit each year. Australians are expected to send 20 billion texts this year, more than 20 per cent higher than last year. While the cost of mobile phone calls has declined in the past five years, the standard flat rate for a text message at Telstra and Optus has remained unchanged at 25 cents. At Vodafone, a text is 28 cents. According to research done for The Sun-Herald, that is more than 10 times what it costs in many parts of Asia and almost a third higher than in Europe and Canada. The Australian consumer is being "abused" by this text messaging pricing rort, said Allan Asher, chief executive of the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network, a new consumer body established by Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy. "The mobile service providers are pricing texts at a vast profit margin and, sadly, it shows just how far from the competitive world market Australia is," he said. "We are being abused by the Australian telcos. ''Our service is among the worst in the world and our prices are among the highest. We are being taken for a ride by an industry that just doesn't care." Last financial year, total mobile telecommunications revenue increased by 10 per cent from $10.8 billion to $12 billion, while mobile phone subscriptions increased to 24 million. Consumer monitor Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn said the price of text messages would not come down until there was ''a proper competitive market with transparent pricing''. Robin Braun, professor of Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney, said that texts were a ''huge money spinner''. The cost of texting on the GSM (2G) system was effectively free for the telecommunications companies, as they piggybacked on the management channel used for the operation of the network. Texting was a cost for the 3G system but it was ''minuscule'', Professor Braun said. The 25 cent cost of a text, for 160 bytes, means Optus and Telstra effectively charge $1560 per megabyte. If comparing with a $30 internet plan with a download limit of 10 gigabytes, the charge per megabyte is 0.3 cents, including free email. There are several online companies in Australia offering cheap packages of text messages, often used by marketing companies. One Australian company, SMS Tech, resells bulk text packages for between 5 and 8 cents a text. SMS Global resells text services at between 5 and 10 cents a message - for both local and international texts. The standard price for an international text at the major mobile services providers is 50 cents. SMS Global director of marketing Paul McKenna said: "We came into the market with a belief that everyone is paying too much for SMS." Australia's three mobile network carriers Telstra, Optus and Vodafone argue they are not charging 25 to 28 cents a text since most Australians sign up to a cap plan, whereby the user gets a certain number of calls and texts a month for a set amount of money. Vodafone Australia spokesman Greg Spears said the company's $49 cap plan, for example, provided customers with $350 credit a month. ''If a customer used their entire $350 worth of credit exclusively for texts, that customer could send 1250 texts per month - so each text has actually cost less than 4 cents.'' However, Mr Spears conceded there was a need to be more transparent about costs to customers in the cap plans. An Optus spokeswoman pointed to the Australian Communications and Media Authority Communications 2008-09 report, stating the average revenue generated per text message sent in Australia had declined, from 9.1 cents the previous year to 8.6 cents. She also pointed to the range of Optus SMS packages such as one whereby customers could send 500 texts for $10 a month, which reduced the price of messages to 2 cents. A spokesperson for Senator Conroy said: ''There is competition in the mobile phone market. Companies offer a range of different services. It is important that consumers shop around for the best deal.'' Telstra did not respond to a request for comment. Thursday, 21 January 2010 Oracle-Sun deal gets EU approval, finally .. The European Commission has officially approved the Oracle-Sun merger, paving the way for Oracle to take over Sun Microsystems in a deal valued at more than $7 billion. "I am now satisfied that competition and innovation will be preserved on all the markets concerned. Oracle's acquisition of Sun has the potential to revitalize important assets and create new and innovative products," said Neelie Kroes, the European antitrust commissioner, in a statement Thursday. The approval by the EC, which faced a late-January deadline, comes after months of limbo during which the Commission expressed skepticism about the antitrust aspects of the proposed deal, first announced in April 2009. Concerns that Oracle's ownership of the MySQL software would pose a competitive threat in the database market prompted the European regulators to launch an in-depth investigation in September. Specifically, the Commission feared that MySQL's role as a leading open-source database might be jeopardized Oracle, a software powerhouse built on its proprietary database, took ownership. Oracle has an event planned for next Wednesday, open to customers, partners, press, and analysts, in which CEO Larry Ellison and other executives from both Oracle and Sun will discuss their strategy and road map for integrating the two companies and their respective products. In now okaying the deal, the EC cited several factors that seemed to ease its mind. The Commission said it found that "although MySQL and Oracle compete in certain parts of the database market, they are not close competitors in others, such as the high-end segment." The EC, which is the regulatory arm of the European Union, also felt that even if Oracle were to limit MySQL's position as an open-source product, other open-source databases could rise to fill the void. In its investigation, the European regulators named the open-source database PostgreSQL, considered by many to be a viable alternative to MySQL. Additionally, they found that other forks of the MySQL code could also sprout quickly enough to provide competition to Oracle if necessary. In addition, the EC was reassured by a series of pledges made by Oracle in December, in which the company promised to support and develop MySQL under an open-source license. Oracle committed to spend more on R&D, maintain healthy relations with third-party developers, and launch advisory boards to help guide the product's future. Oracle has already made good on some of its pledges, the EC noted, by offering third parties the option to amend their license contracts for MySQL, allowing them to continue to build storage engines that integrate with the product and enhance its capabilities. Besides its focus on MySQL, the Commission also considered the impact of Oracle owning Sun's Java platform, an issue that concerned the U.S. Justice Department before it okayed the merger. The EC looked at the possibility that Oracle might prevent access to Java's intellectual property rights, especially to its competitors. But the commission felt that Oracle would gain nothing from such an action as this would actually limit the growth of Java. The company would also be restricted in tampering with Java's intellectual property by the involvement from other tech companies in the Java Community Process (JCP), which helps build and update specifications for Java technology. Since Oracle revealed its intent to buy Sun last April, the deal has gone through a roller coaster ride of investigations, complaints, and concerns. After shareholders gave the merger the thumb's up in July, the U.S. Justice Department followed in August by granting regulatory approval. Oracle seemed confident the deal would slide through until the European Commission stepped on the brakes in November by formally objecting to the merger, citing worries over a Sun-controlled MySQL. Other prominent voices chimed in to raise similar fears, including MySQL co-founder Michael "Monty" Widenius, who urged Oracle to sell MySQL to move the deal forward. In the meantime, Sun's future looked increasingly cloudy as the company lost money daily, and Sun customers were wooed by competitors IBM and Hewlett-Packard. But Oracle CEO Larry Ellison remained steadfast, vowing not to sell MySQL just to win approval and eventually placating the EC by issuing his list of pledges. With the EC's nod, Oracle said it now expects unconditional approval from China and Russia and intends to close the deal shortly. Microsoft's body-sensing, button-busting controller A LONG-lived videogaming skill could be on the way out this year as Microsoft hones an add-on to its Xbox 360 console aimed at making button-studded games controllers obsolete. The device, called Natal after the city in northern Brazil, allows players to control a game using only their body movements and voice. Robbie Bach, Microsoft's president of entertainment and devices, announced at the CES show in Las Vegas, Nevada, this week that Natal would go on sale in late 2010. Microsoft unveiled Natal in June 2009 at the E3 games industry expo in Los Angeles, but revealed little about how it works. Now the company has allowed New Scientist access to the device and its creators to discover more details. A player standing anywhere between 0.8 and 4 metres from Natal is illuminated with infrared light. A monochrome video camera records how much of that light they reflect, using the brightness of the signal to approximate their distance from the device and capture their movements in 3D. This means Natal doesn't require users to wear markers on their body - unlike the technology used by movie studios to animate CGI figures. Motion capture normally requires massive processing power, and paring down the software to run on an everyday games console was a serious challenge, says Natal's lead developer, Alex Kipman. "Natal has to work on the existing hardware without taking too much hardware processing away from the games developers." Microsoft collected "terabytes" of data of people in poses likely to crop up during game play, both in motion capture studios and their own homes. Frames from the home videos were manually labelled to identify key body parts, and the data was then fed into "expert system" software running on a powerful cluster of computers. The result was a 50-megabyte software package that can recognise 31 different body parts in any video frame. "When we train this 'brain' we are telling it: this is the head, this is the shoulder. And we're doing that over millions of frames," says Kipman. "When it sees a new image it can tell you the probability it's seeing a certain body part based on that historical information." Natal also includes software that has a basic understanding of human anatomy. Using its knowledge that, for example, hands are connected to arms, which are attached to shoulders, it can refine its guesses about body pose to recognise where body parts are even when they are hidden from Natal's camera. "It correctly positions your hand even if it's held behind your back," Kipman says. "It knows the hand can only be in one place." That's important because during multiplayer games there won't always be a clear view of both players at all times. He says Natal consumes just 10 to 15 per cent of the Xbox's computing resources and it can recognise any pose in just 10 milliseconds. It needs only 160 milliseconds to latch on to the body shape of a new user stepping in front of it. The system locates body parts to within a 4-centimetre cube, says Kipman. That's far less precise than lab-based systems or the millimetre precision of Hollywood motion capture. But Douglas Lanman, who works on markerless 3D interaction at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and is not involved with Natal, says that this will likely be accurate enough for gamers. Lanman is watching closely to see what kind of games Natal makes possible, and how they are received. "Will users find them as compelling as they found the Wii games? Is it important to have physical buttons? We'll know soon." Those kind of questions, and a desire to move away from the controller-focused interaction that has dominated for decades, are central to Natal, Kipman says. "We think input using existing controllers is the barrier, and by erasing that we can realistically say: all you need to play is life experience." Tuesday, 19 January 2010 Siapakah Herman Sarens Sudiro ?? Kini, setelah sekian lama tenggelam, nama Herman kembali "terkenal". Source : here

Thursday, 14 January 2010 Google Attack Part of Campaign Computer attacks on Google that the search giant said originated in China were part of a concerted political and corporate espionage effort that exploited security flaws in e-mail attachments to sneak into the networks of major financial, defense and technology companies and research institutions in the United States, security experts said. At least 34 companies -- including Yahoo, Symantec, Adobe, Northrop Grumman and Dow Chemical -- were attacked, according to congressional and industry sources. Google, which disclosed on Tuesday that hackers had penetrated the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights advocates in the United States, Europe and China, threatened to shutter its operations in the country as a result. Human rights groups as well as Washington-based think tanks that have helped shape the debate in Congress about China were also hit. Security experts say the attacks showed a new level of sophistication, exploiting multiple flaws in different software programs and underscoring what senior administration officials have said over the past year is an increasingly serious cyber threat to the nation's critical industries. "Usually it's a group using one type of malicious code per target," said Eli Jellenc, head of international cyber-intelligence for VeriSign's iDefense Labs, a Silicon Valley company helping some firms investigate the attacks. "In this case, they're using multiple types against multiple targets -- but all in the same attack campaign. That's a marked leap in coordination." While it's difficult to say with certainty where a cyberattack originated because the Internet allows hackers to seemingly crisscross country borders and time zones in seconds, the issue is quickly turning into a source of diplomatic tension. The standoff between Google and China touches on the most sensitive subjects in U.S.-China relations: human rights and censorship, trade, intellectual property disputes, and access to hightech military technology. "The recent cyber-intrusion that Google attributes to China is troubling, and the federal government is looking into it," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said. He added that President Obama made Internet freedom "a central human rights issue" on his trip to China last fall. Since it began operations in China five years ago, Google had agreed in theory to filter sensitive searches but clashed with the Chinese government on what material was covered, and the company regularly found its service blocked when it defied its hosts. China's government has said it is investigating Google's claims. In China, news about Tuesday's public rebuke by Google was heavily censored except for a stinging opinion piece in the official People's Daily that called the Silicon Valley tech giant a "spoiled child" and predicted that it would not follow through on its ultimatum. The recent attacks seem to have targeted companies in strategic industries in which China is lagging, industry experts said. The attacks on defense companies were aimed at gaining information on weapons systems, experts said, while those on tech firms sought valuable source code that powers software applications -- the firms' bread and butter. The attacks also focused on obtaining information about political dissidents. "This is a big espionage program aimed at getting hightech information and politically sensitive information -- the high-tech information to jump-start China's economy and the political information to ensure the survival of the regime," said James A. Lewis, a cyber and national security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "This is what China's leadership is after. This reflects China's national priorities." Adobe, a software maker, confirmed on Wednesday that it learned of the attacks on Jan. 2 but said there was "no evidence to indicate that any sensitive information . . . has been compromised," while Symantec, which makes security software, said it is investigating to "ensure we are providing appropriate protection to our customers." Dow Chemical said that it has "no reason to believe that the safety, security and intellectual property of our operations are in jeopardy." Yahoo and defense contractor Northrop Grumman declined to comment on the attack. The attackers, experts said, followed the familiar "phishing" ruse: A recipient opens an e-mail that purports to be from someone he knows and, not suspecting malicious intent, opens an attachment containing a "sleeper" program that embeds in his computer. That program can be controlled remotely, allowing the attacker to access e-mail, send confidential documents to a specific address -- even turn on a Web camera or microphone to record what is going on in the room. In many cases, a user does not know he has been the victim of an attack. One type of attack exploits a flaw in Adobe Reader, a popular free program that allows e-mail users to read .pdf document files. The flaw was made public Dec. 15 but fixed only on Tuesday -- the day Google announced that its systems had been compromised. Sara L.M. Davis, executive director of New York-based Asia Catalyst, which assists charities in developing countries, said she began to receive these fake e-mails shortly after the new year. The senders all appeared to be people with whom she regularly communicates. The subject lines contained topics -- "AIDS in China" or "Some photographs of you and Dr. Gao" -- that suggested familiarity with her and her organization. "If I weren't already paranoid, I would have already opened one," Davis said. Google declined to provide details on what exactly the attackers took and whether it included any information about super-secret search engine technology that drives the company's profits. Nart Villeneuve, a research fellow at the University of Toronto, has analyzed attack e-mails sent to human rights groups over the past few months. Villeneuve, who works at Citizen Lab, which focuses on Internet and politics, helped research GhostNet, a vast cyberspying operation revealed last year that apparently originated in China and targeted the office of the Dalai Lama, foreign embassies and government offices. He said the GhostNet attack strategy was the same as that used against Google, other U.S. companies and human rights groups this time around. The attack e-mails to the human rights groups could mostly be traced back to "command and control" computers in mainland China. In August, someone obtained a list of 5,000 subscribers to the China Leadership Monitor, a respected quarterly publication from the Stanford University's Hoover Institution. The subscribers received a fake e-mail from a Gmail account purportedly from the publication but with an attachment that would take over their computers. Alice Miller, a visiting professor at Stanford and the publication's editor, said she had worked with U.S. government investigators and said the attack originated in China. Tuesday, 12 January 2010 Fads aside, IT is not a fashion industry It's been said that information technology is a fashion industry--that we just keep following the latest hype and fads. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison last year referred to cloud computing this way. Ellison loves this dig, and he uses it least once every technology generation. He's not alone. I, however, disagree with the entire curmudgeon corps' "It's just hype!" attitude. While it's true that we in IT have our fashions, just like any field of human endeavor, we're generally pretty practical. It's hard to see either IT's executives or its technicians as highly subject to the whims of style or flights of fancy. The truth is closer to the notion that we're an evolving industry--one constantly struggling to find better ways. It's not easy to grapple with the fantastic, relentless progress afforded by Moore's Law (on the supply side), nor the constant demand for more capacity, capability, and integration (on the demand side). In a few short decades, IT has undergone a massive shift from an engineering-oriented support role to driving the beating heart of the global economy. IT is now central to large swaths of all human activity. As new technologies and strategies come online--whether network computing, open source, agile development, service-oriented architecture (SOA), cloud computing, virtualization, or whatever--we seek to employ them to improve our outcomes. There's always a bit of experimentation and a bit of hype involved in the early days. Indeed, without that willingness to "try it out" and a strong shot of enthusiasm on the side, we wouldn't be advancing as well as we are. That's not just hype you're hearing; it's also the will to progress. And for the most part, the recipe works. Most of the major new approaches touted over the past few decades have become workaday parts of the IT landscape. Most apps, for example, are now "client-server" in design. Linux and other open-source engines run much of the Internet. SOA is how enterprise IT is designed. NASA plans on-time shuttle liftoff despite snag NASA is still hoping to launch the shuttle Endeavour in early February as engineers scramble to repair broken hoses on the new space station module set to ride aboard the orbiter. Endeavour is slated to launch the new Tranquility module to the International Space Station on Feb. 7 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. But two of the module's four ammonia coolant hoses have failed standard pre-launch checks, forcing engineers to come up with a repair plan while others try to build new hoses from scratch, station managers said Monday. "Folks are working really hard to get the hoses checked out, completed, certified [and] tested," said Pete Hasbrook, NASA manager for the Expedition 22 mission aboard the space station. "We are still working toward the Feb. 7 launch date." The Tranquility module will provide additional living space for the crew on board the space station. Broken hoses The new module, like other space station rooms, uses liquid ammonia as a coolant to keep its computers and other electronic equipment cool in space. The coolant hoses are routed on the exterior of the space station and must function at a pressure of 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi) to keep the ammonia supply liquid and moving, Hasbrook said. But the two broken coolant hoses on Tranquility failed at a pressure of only 1,500 psi or so, apparently due to a defect in the exterior braided-metal sheath covering the flexible hose, Hasbrook said. The metal braids began separating from the hose connector during the test, he added. The test was performed in Florida where the shuttle Endeavour is waiting atop its seaside launch pad for the delivery of Tranquility, a seven-window observatory port called the Cupola and other supplies to be launched to the station. Tranquility was initially slated to be attached to an Earth-facing berth on the station's main Unity connecting node. However, the misalignment of ammonia coolant lines on that node led managers to move the new module to an open berth on Unity's port — or left — side. To attach Tranquility there, engineers built the four "jumper" lines to route vital ammonia coolant from Unity to the new module. The hoses are custom-made and each 14 feet (4.2 meters) long – longer than typical station hoses. "We haven't used anything that long before," station flight director David Korth told reporters. "So that may be a contributing factor." Repairs under way Hasbrook said station engineers have successfully tested a "beefedup" version of the coolant hoses using an extra layer of braided metal in Florida, though the final approval on the repair is still under review. Meanwhile, another team at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., is working to modify spare station hoses to replace the damaged ones in case they don't pass muster, he added. Still another option is to launch Endeavour and the Tranquility module as planned, but to delay the space room's full activation until March or later, when new hoses could be launched on a different shuttle flight, Hasbrook said. That option would require spacewalking astronauts to install extra heaters on Tranquility that would allow astronauts to install the module and power up some systems temporarily. The module would feel more like a dark, cool cellar until the new hoses arrive later and allow for the full activation, Hasbrook said. "That's about a Plan C," he added. "The other two options are looking pretty good." Endeavour's STS-130 mission will mark the first of NASA's five final shuttle missions scheduled to fly this year. The agency plans to retire its three space shuttles in the fall to make way for their replacement — the Orion capsules and their Ares rockets. Those new vehicles are expected to be ready to launch astronauts into space no earlier than 2015, and possibly later, experts have said. This week, the five astronauts living aboard the International Space Station plan to move a huge shelf of spare parts from one end of the outpost to the other using its robotic arm. Two Russian cosmonauts also plan to perform a six-hour spacewalk early Thursday to work on a new science module called Poisk to activate its docking port. Near-final Firefox 3.6 out for testing Mozilla has released its first release candidate, RC1, for Firefox 3.6 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The new version includes Personas, which lets people customize the browser's appearance; blocks third-party software from encroaching on its file system turf to increase stability; and perhaps most significantly given the competitive threat from Google Chrome, shortens start-up time and improves responsiveness and JavaScript performance. Firefox 3.6 RC1 is also available from Mozilla's download site. People can notice skins and better performance, but there also are changes deeper under the hood that developers should know about. One is support for the File interface, which can help with tasks like uploading multiple photos and is part of the draft HTML5 standard effort. Another deeper change is running scripts asynchronously, which can help load a Web page faster by putting off some work until the high-priority chores are complete. Mozilla had hoped to release the updated browser in 2009 as part of a higher-frequency release schedule, but gave itself a bit more time for Firefox 3.6 and 4.0. 5 Western troops killed in Afghanistan Five NATO service members, including three Americans, were killed in Afghanistan on Monday, underscoring fears that casualties will rise as more foreign troops stream into the country. Nevertheless, a new poll says Afghans are more optimistic than a year ago and think the Taliban are losing momentum. The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said he believed the rising presence of international forces was blunting the militants. Gen. Stanley McChrystal said the international force is on its way to convincing the Afghan people that it was there to protect them. "When I sit in an area that the Taliban controlled only seven months ago and now you meet with ... elders and they describe with considerable optimism the future, you sense the tide is turning," he told ABC News about a recent trip to Helmand province where many of the U.S. reinforcements will be sent. Afghans also think better days are ahead, according to the opinion poll, conducted last month before the suicide bombing that killed seven employees at a CIA base. About 40 percent of Afghans believe the Taliban insurgency is weaker than it was a year ago; 30 percent think it has gotten stronger and 25 percent believe the strength of the insurgency remains the same. Nearly seven in 10 Afghans support the presence of U.S. forces and 61 percent favor the military buildup, according to the survey, the fifth commissioned by ABC, the BBC and ARD German TV since 2005. President Barack Obama announced last month that the U.S. is sending 30,000 more American troops to Afghanistan, bringing the total to nearly 98,000. NATO is sending 7,000 reinforcements. Although polling in a war zone is often problematic, the results suggest that most Afghans neither support the Taliban nor share the concerns in the West about the legitimacy of President Hamid Karzai's re-election after a fraud-riddled election. They also underscore the ambivalence of the public about the foreign forces, which are still held in low regard here. The new violence came despite the onset of winter weather. The three Americans were killed in a firefight with militants during a patrol in an undisclosed area of southern Afghanistan, the NATO command announced. That raised to at least 10 the number of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an Associated Press tally. A French soldier also was killed and another was seriously wounded during a joint patrol with Afghan troops in the Alasay district of Kapisa province, an area largely under insurgent control. NATO said on Monday another service member was killed in the clash but later announced that the soldier was critically wounded. It said another service member was killed by a roadside bomb in the south but did not state nationality. British authorities later announced the death of a British bomb disposal expert as a result of an explosion in the Musa Qaleh area of Helmand Province. It was unclear if this death was in addition to the ones already announced by NATO. The last time five international soldiers died in a single day was Jan. 3. Seven CIA officials and a Jordanian intelligence officer also were killed in the Dec. 30 suicide bombing at Camp Chapman in Khost province. While Afghans support the presence of foreign forces, the overall image of the U.S. and NATO remains weak, according to the poll released Monday. Fifty-nine percent of the Afghans surveyed rated the work of the U.S. and NATO as either poor or fair; 38 percent rated the U.S. effort as good or excellent; and 3 percent had no opinion. NATO forces had slightly better marks: 62 percent rated NATO fair or poor; 35 percent rated the alliance's work good and excellent; and 4 percent had no opinion. The main change in the Afghans' view of the United States and NATO forces was diminished blame for their overall role in violence. Forty-two percent of Afghans now blame the violence on the Taliban _ up from 27 percent a year ago. Seventeen percent blame the U.S., NATO or the Afghan security forces, down from 36 percent a year ago. But 66 percent said airstrikes by the U.S. and international forces were unacceptable because they endangered too many innocent civilians, even though they might help defeat militants. After steep declines in recent years, seven in 10 Afghans think their nation is headed in the right direction. That's up 30 percentage points since January 2009. The number of Afghans who expect their lives will be better a year from now also has jumped 20 percentage points from a year ago _ to a new high of 71 percent, the poll said. However, Afghans' views about the direction the nation was headed are gloomier in high-conflict areas, such as Helmand, the heart of the Afghan poppy trade and the Taliban-led insurgency, the poll said. Despite eight years of war, 61 percent of the Afghans surveyed said they expect their children will have a better life _ up 14 percentage points in the past 12 months, according to the poll. Abdul Salam Zaeef, a former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, does not share the optimism. In an interview with the AP earlier this week, Zaeef said he thought the situation in the country was deteriorating _ that Afghanistan was moving in the wrong direction. "I'm not optimistic that something positive will happen in Afghanistan," he said. "Anything happening _ it will be negative." But according to the poll, the Taliban does not enjoy overwhelming support from the public. Asked whether they wanted Afghanistan run by the Taliban or the current government, 90 percent said they favored Karzai's government. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband called the poll results "striking and significant" "Our greatest resource in Afghanistan is the fact that the Afghan people don't want to go back to Taliban misrule," Miliband told BBC Radio 4's World at One. "The important thing now is that we take advantage of the sense of optimism ... (and) don't rest on our laurels, because next year is an absolutely key year for Afghanistan," he said. The poll of a national random sample of 1,534 adults in all 34 Afghan provinces was conducted from Dec. 11 to Dec. 23. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points. The interviews were conducted in person by the Afghan Center for Socio-Economic and Opinion Research in Kabul, a subsidiary of D3 Systems Inc. in Vienna, Va. The survey tracks a turnaround in public attitudes toward the Afghan government and the country's embattled, yet growing, security forces. Seventy percent gave positive ratings to Karzai and the Afghan National Army _ up from 52 percent and 57 percent, respectively. And six of 10 Afghans gave their government and the Afghan National Police positive ratings _ up from 49 percent and 57 percent, respectively. Robotic Mousetrap Shows No Mercy

At five and a half pounds, with a polished aluminum case, and complete with “armed, detect, fire” lights, this new robotic mousetrap is definitely a 21st century killing device. Its creator, Jake Easton, who is the managing editor of tech news site Telovation.com, as well as a “curious tinkerer,” decided to build the robotic mousetrap as an innovative way to showcase technology, perhaps to a new audience. While Easton admits that the oldfashioned mousetrap might be simpler and more practical, his new admittedly overdesigned mousetrap is a lot more fun to watch. "It would be difficult to beat the simplicity that James Atkinson designed into his mousetrap more than 100 years ago," Easton said. While he considers himself more of a minimalist, in this case, Easton's superfluous design was purposefully chosen for the added "wow" factor that it brought to the project – “like cracking a nut with a sledgehammer,” he said. The robotic mousetrap features a variety of pneumatic and electronic sensing technologies to quickly detect and eliminate its target. It measures 12" x 6" x 2.5" high, and has a 0.25" thick 6061 polished aluminum case that contains the mechanical and electronic systems, including solenoid valves, controllers, indicators, and circuit boards. The technology-rich design also features ultrasonic sensing, a laser, a key lock switch with manual hammer override, visual monitoring of power (12v), and a high-speed pneumatic cylinder. Its strike force at 40 PSI is 102 pounds. However, much of the materials were simply “junk” that Easton has accumulated over the past decade or so, saving them for potential use in future projects. "A good supply of junk is an inventor's best friend, and goes a long way to keeping project costs down," he said. Watch a short video of the mousetrap in action below:

Biasanya, diare ringan berlangsung selama 3 sampai 6 hari.
