I was in Chicago and had an opportunity to visit Shedd Aquarium. Here are some pics.

Yes, thank you. It's weird to think a public aquarium like this one can have cyano issues just like us smalltimers

You'll also notice they're pretty successful at growing a wide range of Macro algaes. That takes a pretty nutrient rich environment. The Shed is an outstanding public aquarium and definitely worth the visit if you're passing through the Chicago area.

My point is that it's common practice in our hobby to see a tank with cyano and rush to judgement that it's a problem tank or an unhealthy tank. In many cases it's not an inaccurate assessment. To see a public aquarium like this with some of the best marine biologists around have the same things to deal with as us hobbyists is reassuring to me that these so called 'tell tale' signs of unhealthiness is not necessarily accurate at all and that a little cyano doesn't make you a poor reefer. I'll be in Chicago this fall. I'll put it on my things to do list!

Shedd Aquarium is definately a place to visit. I went there many times when I lived in Indiana. The Science museum is beyond belief. I would recommend putting that on your list also.
