Clean Up the World is a community based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment. Now in its 24th year, Clean Up the World, held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), mobilises an estimated 35 million volunteers from 130 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world. Bangkok River Partners is proud to join the campaign in Bangkok. In 2017, our partner hotels and venues are working with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Eco-Capital Forum (comprised of foreign embassies in Bangkok), local businesses, community groups, and their neighbours to remove rubbish from streets, public spaces, and canals that might feed them into the Chaophraya River and onto the beaches in the Gulf of Thailand. However, Clean Up the World in Bangkok is doing something different this year – the organizers will be incorporating citizen science into the activities. In order to work towards a long-term goal of eliminating waste, data on waste will be collected this year. The categorized and counted items in the waste found will be recorded to establish a baseline to which data from subsequent years can be compared with. Such hard data will be insightful and lead to future high impact solutions and measureable goals. Data collection will be done in collaboration with Wayne Phillips of Mahidol University and Madeleine Recknagel of The Sustainable Self. A team of volunteers will be on hand to help Bangkok River Partners and Eco-Capital Forum with the data collection.
