ABOUT THE ARBORETUM… The Coastal Plain Research Arboretum provides a living resource for research, education, and recreation among the native plant species of the Southeast Coastal Plain. It is located on the grounds of the University of Georgia, Tifton Campus, formerly known as the Coastal Plain Experiment Station. The arboretum encompasses 38 acres of stream-side forest and wetland. Early Efforts Earliest efforts focused on an eight acre area of pinewoods where trees were thinned and a small pond installed. An existing house was renovated as a headquarters building — suitable for small group meetings. An outdoor children’s classroom was added to accommodate field trips. Hundreds of native plants were installed and a native azalea collection established. The azalea collection honors former experiment station director E. Broadus Browne. A project supported by the Camellia District of the Garden Clubs of Georgia was the Deen Day Smith Wildlife Garden. A bird sanctuary was added in honor of Loy Morgan, a research scientist at the station. The Garden Clubs of Georgia also donated four arbors and a gazebo to the arboretum through various clubs. Present and Future Plans The headquarters building, now known as The Cottage, has been renovated. Handicap accessible restrooms and a workroom have been added. The meeting room is being updated. Future plans include representations of such specialized areas as a swamp and pitcher plant bog. The bog will have boardwalks and special viewing areas. You Can Help

The work being done at the Coastal Plain Research Arboretum (CPRA) is made possible through the support of both state and federal units at the Tifton Campus. The Garden Clubs of Georgia have special projects which are designated for the arboretum. However, the CPRA has limited funds and completion of projects and continued maintenance of the site will require donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Please consider including a gift in your estate plan to the University of Georgia Foundation for the benefit of the Coastal Plain Research Arboretum Development Fund. The arboretum is a valuable resource for the Tifton area and will attract the support of a wide range of individuals and organizations in Georgia and the southeast.
