Does anyone know the difference between the Amp Cell and Amp Cell-S irons? I hit the Amp Cell-S irons today and really liked them especially compared to the BioCell. The only thing I liked as much were the JPX825 but not even close to enough to justify the massive price difference.

The sales person said the only difference between the Amp and Amp-S is the that the Amp-S have uniflex shafts and the Amp have the different shaft options. I also noticed that the grips on the Amp-S are different. Does anyone have some insight here? The Amp-S don't even appear on the Cobra website which is a red flag for me I guess. Are they made only for the big retailers? There is a about a $50 difference in street price.

If the heads are indeed really the same I don't care about the grips since I'll replace them with midsized anyway but if it's worth $50 for the shaft upgrade (the Amp would come with the Dynalite 90s and the Amp-S with the TrueTemper uniflex) I'd go for the regular Amps.

In case you're looking at higher prices, just want to mention new Amp Cell's are available on Ebay for ~$250 from reputable sellers. I bought mine from tee2green6931 a few months ago, and the clubs have been great. permalink

This is exactly what I'm looking at now. RBG has the Amp-s on eBay for $199. I just pulled the trigger on the regualr Amp. I've been thinking about this for way too long haha! permalink

Bought my old amp cells on eBay for around $275 iirc when they were still relatively newly released clubs. Loved them, so long and forgiving. I've since switched to the pro version but still highly recommend them. Go ebay and get the real deal.

Good stuff, I think you'll love them. I doubt there is much difference between the S and regular but it's such a small price difference and you'll be using them often enough (probably) to where it's worth the cost. permalink

Thanks I'm sure they'll be fine. I tend to overthink these things. I'm playing with either my old man's graphite Wilson fat shafts or my ancient Mizunos so I'm sure it'll be a huge improvement. I did take a look at the numbers on the lofts. Now I see why they ditch the 3 iron and give you a gap wedge - those are some seriously strong lofts. Since the amp gap is 49, I'll still probably keep my old gap wedge in the bag so I'm not jumping from the amp 49 straight up to a 56 sand wedge. permalink

Oh yea. Basically since switching from the regulars to the pros it's a one club difference at least between each club. I gamed a 56 with that setup and there was a little bit of a gap. embed

The Amp Cell come in different color options, if that's your thing. The metal in them is a little cheaper. Harder, so it won't feel as soft. But it will also last a bit longer if you're looking to hang on to them for a long time.

They're made for big stores like DSG so that more casual golfers will buy irons at a lower price point. That's why they're Uniflex shafts as well. A lot of companies will do this to get a bit more out of the same R&D that went into the original (Amp Cell) line. permalink

Apparently they use a different casting material. More stainless steel. And the shaft is supposed to be worse. I have no personal experience but that is what I found. I would get the regular amp cell if the difference isn't much money permalink

They actually reduced the price online to match the $399 of the Amp Cell S. No reason not to get the good ones. permalink

Nah, I was talking brand new. On the Dick's website, Amp Cell S are $399. On Cobra's website, Amp Cell Original were $699, but now they're $399 permalink

Understood. I think $399 is a good price if you want new. But if you don't mind used you could save a few bucks. I don't judge either way. I didn't know much about the used market for awhile so just trying to pass it along :) permalink

Thank you for your interest in Cobra! There are only a few differences between the Amp Cell and the Amp Cell S. The Amp Cell S were only available at Dicks Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy. You were and are unable to purchase them directly through us and they were manufactured for DSG and GG as a better priced club compared to the Amp Cell. The material used in the manufacturing process is not the same quality as our Amp Cell irons and that is why the price was able to be lower at retail. Other than that, the specs are the same for the two and the performance will be pretty similar to the Amp Cell.
