ear Supporters,

The Singapore Committee for UN Women was established as UNIFEM Singapore in 1999. We are a completely self-funded, not-for-profit entity, deriving no funding from regional or global head offices of the United Nations or UN Women. Instead, as a National Committee, it is through our own fundraising efforts in Singapore that we have been able to support programs around the region from Aceh to Cambodia, from Thailand to Nepal. And closer to home – Singapore and Bintan. 2012 was a highly rewarding year for the Singapore Committee for UN Women. We are humbled and inspired by the generosity and kindness of our supporters. Funds raised at SNOW 2012 benefited 2000 women bamboo weavers and their families in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia and lit a new flame for women in underserved slums in India supported by the work of the Navjyoti foundation. Support provided through SNOW also helps us run our public education campaigns that empower women and inspire youth towards gender equality and freedom from abuse in Singapore. These education campaigns continue to have on-going positive impact beyond our borders and present year. Funds raised this year at SNOW will help over 9000 Karenni survivors of violence through the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and International Rescue Committee. These women living in the Ban Mai Nai Soi and Ban Mae Surin refugee camps

along the Thailand-Myanmar border will gain access to high quality care from community based help centres, allowing them to heal quickly and safely. All this would not have been possible without YOUR help and unwavering support, the strategic guidance of our generous private, corporate and academic sponsors, our volunteers investing their heart and time, our supporters in promoting women’s empowerment, our friends in diplomacy, government and academia, as well as our advisors. It is really because of YOU that we can continue our mission and grow as an organization of passionate, cause-driven people focused on the rights and empowerment of women and girls in the region. We also extend our humble appreciation to our young and dedicated small team of interns and volunteers, a mini United Nations in diversity of composition, who have worked day and night to carry out our mission. We are looking forward to what the future will bring in our work towards promoting gender equality and empowering women. Your generosity and support at SNOW 2013 will allow us to continue our important work in Singapore and the region. With much gratitude, The Executive Committee and The Office Team

ur Committee’s Work in Singapore

ABOUT THE SINGAPORE COMMITTEE FOR UN WOMEN

Day Off Campaign • In conjunction with local NGOs TWC2 and HOME our National Committee has campaigned since 2008 to urge employers to give their domestic worker a regular rest day off. •2 012 was a landmark year for our campaign, with the Ministry of Manpower mandating a mandatory day off per week for foreign domestic workers (FDWs) receiving or renewing their work permit after 1 Jan 2013, impacting the lives of 2,08,400 FDWs in Singapore. • However, research has shown that there is still a long way to go in convincing employers to implement the act and we will continue to focus on this issue until it is no longer a concern. The STOP Sex Trafficking Campaign • Over the course of the three year STOP Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People campaign, over 50,000 people were engaged to end the trafficking of women and girls into Singapore through talks, film screenings, concerts, road shows and youth led events. • In partnership with The Body Shop and HOME, 114,886 petitions were collected and were subsequently presented to the Singapore Inter Agency Taskforce Against Trafficking for future action. Violence Against Women •Since 2006, we have been spreading an important message about the prevention of abuse and violence against women through the Help Anna campaign, talk sessions and workshops. •M ore than 20,000 students and adults across Singapore have attended our talks on this subject to date. •I n addition, we have helped provide scholarships and vocational training programs to over 200 women and girls-at-risk in the areas of personal development, mentoring and career exposure activities. Public Education •Our public awareness programmes focus on generating awareness amongst the public in Singapore on often neglected women’s issues. •Topics range from the many roles of women in society; respect for migrant women in the house; the incidence of violence against women; trafficking of women and children; and, other issues that affect us all. Our Work in the Region Our Committee’s fundraising supports a number of innovative UN Women programmes in the region. Education

Financial Literacy, Indonesia •UN Women Indonesia is working to facilitate safe migration practices as well as local livelihood programs. •Program trains migrant women and families in migration planning and management of remittances through formal channels Health Cambodian Community of Women (CCW), Cambodia • Project developed to strengthen the capability of CCW member who are living with HIV/AIDS to take a lead in advocating for the rights and needs of women living with HIV. • This happened at different levels of decision-making processes: national, provincial and local levels Economic Empowerment Bamboo Project, Cambodia • In partnership with Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA), the Provincial Department of Women’s Affairs (PDWA) and the Women’s Development Centre (WDC) in the Kampon Chhang • The project trained women entrepreneurs in bamboo weaving, with a focus on financial literacy, management skills, leadership and capacity building. Project Inspire, Global • A Singapore-office initiated business plan competition for young social entrepreneurs around the globe, who aim to improve women’s livelihoods in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. • Co-organized with MasterCard, the 2013 Grand Prize Winner, the Creative Street Micro-Entrepreneurs from India, aimed to expand training sessions on designing and handicraft skills for women and girls at-risk in slum areas. • Since its inception in 2011, this social media driven competition has generated over 1300 pitch proposals submitted by youth around the world representing more than 60 different countries, and over 70,000 social media followers. About UN Women The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) was formed in 1976 when the world collectively recognized an urgent need to promote women’s rights: women’s economic security, protection of women against violence, women’s education, health and political participation (including the right to vote). To accelerate the organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. UN Women was launched on 1 January 2011 as the unifying global champion for women and girls, and operates under the United Nations Secretary-General.

BIOGRAPHIES

Janice Wong – Chef

Andre Chiang – Chef Competition, judged by renowned master chefs including Frédéric Bau and Ferran Adrià.

Boundless - a word that aptly sums up Chef Janice Wong. Her refined and ever-evolving dessert creations began with her studies at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, arguably the world’s best culinary school, to pursue a career in pastry.

Dissatisfied with how desserts were never the highlight of a meal, Chef Wong actively sought to change this perception with the opening of 2am: dessertbar in 2007. Her never ending passion for culinary art has propelled her forward to test the limits of dessert making, including constantly blurring the boundaries between sweet and savory. Ultimately, Chef Janice Wong maintains a distinctly Asian identity through the incorporation of ingredients and childhood memories from Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.

Eager to perfect her craft, Chef Janice Wong apprenticed in some of the most cutting edge restaurants internationally, starting out with experience at Melbourne stalwarts, Fenix, The Botanical and Singapore’s Les Amis, followed by New York and Chicago institutions such as WD-50, Room4dessert, Per Se, Alinea and L20 as well as Europe’s top patissiers, Pierre Herme and Oriol Balaguer. She had the opportunity to work alongside celebrated chefs such as Gunther Hubrechsen, Loretta Fanella, Oriol Balaguer, Arzak, Will Goldfarb, Alex Stupak and Pierre Herme among others.

The creations plated at 2am:dessertbar are sweet treats to be savored, and are masterpieces when matched with specialty wine-pairings. The allure of 2am:dessertbar has reached dessert-lovers from the “cool kids” to celebrities, to beyond Singapore’s shores and tickled the interest of local and international chefs.

On top of her participation in many globally recognized culinary events, Chef Janice Wong was selected as the sole Asian representative competing against seven other pastry chefs from around the world at 2010 Madrid Fusion’s prestigious C3

Supporting UN Women Singapore, S.N.O.W. 2013 is a very meaningful and inspiring project and without a doubt 2am: dessertbar is excited to participate in such a meaningful project.

Having made an indelible impression on the culinary scene since opening in late 2010, Restaurant ANDRE was recently ranked #5 Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant and Best Restaurant in Singapore as well as #38 World’s Best Restaurant by the coveted Restaurant Magazine list. The New York Times mentioned the restaurant as one of the “Top 10 restaurants in the world worth a plane ride” while Wallpaper magazine places André as one of the “World’s best young chefs”.

André developed a culinary principle based on how our capacity to taste food is influenced by our memory banks, including the personal experiences we acquire over time. Octaphilosophy – unique, texture, memory, pure, terroir, salt, south and artisan represent the eight elements reflecting his roots in south of France. A dinner at Restaurant ANDRE is like a journey to the south of France where the guests can discover myriad flavours and textures that engage the senses.

I am proud of supporting UN Women Singapore as I am personally convinced that the effort to end violence against women is an everyday obligation to all and now is the time to make the tragedy stop before it’s too late.

He is now on his latest culinary adventure in Singapore and will be infusing Jason’s culinary ideas with his own as he oversees ESQUINA and Keong Saik Snacks.

I am strongly against using force on women when issues can be resolved in amicable ways. There is no excuse for violence as women should be respected and romanced for the beautifully created beings that they are.

Coming from a family with a strong matriarchal figure, I have always respected women and the inner strength they exude. It frustrates me no end that many women around the world are routinely and systematically subject to violence and abuse.

After graduating from Goldsmiths College in London in 1989, he won the Turner Prize in 1995. Hirst’s work catapulted him to fame both locally and internationally through its blatant showcasing of death, mortality and science in various forms even through a 14-foot long tiger shark in a tank of formaldehyde.

Opium Opium is part of a series of methodical, precisionist geometric works that exist in contrast to Hirst’s unpredictable “spin paintings.” These spot paintings employ calm angst-free colours and are named after pharmaceutical ingredients.

Artist: Safaruddin Abdul Hamid (Dyn) Dyn’s works, characterised by a fascination for the coexistence of old and new, explore memory and absence by chronicling Singapore’s changing architectural landscape. Familiar local architecture, void of human presence, is depicted in superflat, crisp-edged, candy-coloured compositions that portray the outline and characteristics of the buildings without their shadows or depths. Paintings of pre-war housing estates like Tiong Bahru or the façade of Cathay, drawn from old photographs, evoke nostalgia and loss that reflect the artist’s own childhood memories. Dyn’s work is infused with a poignant sense of isolation, using his painted architecture to create a sense of displacement and longing. Dyn received his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from LASALLE in 2006. He has been recognised with a number of awards and scholarships, including the National Arts Council Arts Bursary in 2002, the Winston Oh Travel Scholarship in 2002 and again in 2004, and the Della Butcher Award in 2003. 38

Smile In accordance to Sergey Sobolev’s style of creation, he has molded Smile with his understanding of spaces set between its boundaries. Hence with this, he has been inspired to create Smile through the streams of light to depict his search for high modernism. With a striking similarity to American minimalism yet balancing complex genealogy, Smile is created to disclose one such example of his works to us as a representation of such spatial works. Smile is simple in its form and representation, yet follows closely to the historical style adapted from ancient greek history of sculptures.

39

Sergey Sobolov’s sculpture style is in search of higher modernism and carries notes of American minimalism similar to Isamu Noguchi and Henry Moore. He compresses narrative elements into metaphor and projects everything onto an expository situation. It opens up the idea of representation in general, laconic and free from unnecessary details by taking form as a boundary of space. He won a tender to participate in the opening of the New Olympic Park of Sculptures in Sochi.

Accenture Development Partnerships is a group within Accenture that provides strategic advice and technical and project management support to nonprofit organizations, nongovernmental organizations, foundations and donor organizations operating in the development sector. We help these organizations achieve their social and economic development goals. Bain & Company Bain & Company is the consulting firm the world’s business leaders come to when they want enduring results. In addition to creating success stories for our clients, Bain Southeast Asia has become an active contributor to the local community through our Bain Cares program. Our employees get personal fulfillment through delivering results—not only for their corporate clients but also non-profit organizations (NPOs). Participating in Bain Cares is a personal choice many of our employees have made to create positive change in the community through one of three pillars of the Bain Cares mission: Training, mentoring and development Our Bain Cares team works extensively with partners in the non-profit and social enterprise space that are focused on training, mentoring and development. That takes the form of executive training workshops and strategy support for the Centre for Non-Profit Leadership (CNPL) and the Social Enterprise Association (SEA). We are also engaged in supporting one of Bain’s global non-profit partners, Endeavor, with their South-East Asia rollout. Pro bono consulting Bain Cares is regularly involved in pro bono projects through which we provide consulting services for free to NPOs, including the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Center to refresh their strategy; EEN (Enabling Employers Network) to develop and implement an evaluation system to recognize companies’ efforts in employing PWDs; and UWCSEA on development of the foundation’s strategies. Bain is now recognized as a key partner of UWCSEA on their “Donors” wall. Community days To complement the pro bono consulting services, we also organize community days, which are volunteering activities throughout the year for the wider office to become part of a broader charitable community. Past activities have included a visit to the zoo with children from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore; beach clean-up at Pulau Ubin; career advice for students at Victoria Junior College; and a visit to the Henderson Old Folks home.
