Q&A Forum Corporate Finance Job Titles: What do they actually mean? HUMAN CAPITAL (/QUESTIONS?TID=11375)

Chris Shumate (Accounting Manager at Dominion Development Group, LLC) | Nov 19, 2014 There are several corporate finance job titles. Among them are CFO, Treasurer, VP of Finance, Director of Finance, Director of Accounting, Director of Financial Reporting, Corporate Controller, Controller, Divisional Controller, and this doesn’t even include their assistants. There are tax directors, tax managers, compliance staff, different type of accountants (general, cost, tax), as well as analysts (financials, budget, treasury, cost), and the list, according to Robert Half’s salary guide, link following, has others. With so many corporate finance job titles is there much difference between many of the titles? Not everyone is high on their title. A review of the salary guide may convince people that it is better to be a VP of Finance that a Director of Finance, especially for a company that is in the $500+ million in company sales. It may also be more advantageous to be a Director of Financial Reporting than a Director of Accounting, irrespective of the company’s sales. What is your view of corporate finance job titles? What does a Treasurer truly do that a VP of Finance or Director of Finance doesn’t do? What is your real life experience with these titles? Answers Jocelyne Lanovaz (Vice President - Finance, CashCo ADM Inc) | Nov 20, 2014 I find a great deal of companies will use the title to streamline the salary, but not the role. I was associated with a company who felt they couldn't "afford" a CFO, so they hired a "Controller" and then renamed the title to "VP Finance" without a salary review. When looking at what a CFO's role is, this individual is actually performing this at a significantly lower income. Examples like this are especially true for the smaller businesses and those organizations who really don't fully understand the finance / accounting world. The Robert Half salary guides unfortunately don't go into the full role scorecard of each position ... focusing more on title and sales volume (which again doesn't necessarily properly reflect the value of the position) I, too, am in the same boat you are - having a challenging time identifying roles with the corresponding titles.

Malak Kazan (VP, Special Projects, ERI Economic Research Institute) | Nov 20, 2014 To make comparisons, the review should be based on the actual job "content" and business context of the roles. Revenue / financial scope is meaningful for senior/executive level positions and is a starting point. With support functions, where they are on the "business impact" life cycle is also important: Is the function purely administrative? Is it providing consultative services? Is it truly a strategy partner with the business? Or a combination of these depending on the talent and infrastructure. Industries going under significant transformation vs. a stable, mature industry require different types of financial leaders which would be reflected in the pay levels and roles. Drawing conclusions based on the levels like Entry level / Professional / Advanced or Supervisory / Manager / Director / VP / Officer ; and the specialty like those mentioned (FP&A, Accounting, Controller, Treasury) without job content and business context is difficult . Hope this helps.

Chris Shumate (Accounting Manager, Dominion Development Group, LLC) | Nov 21, 2014 Thanks for listing every single one. I'm sure you missed a couple. But my question was what's the difference? What is your view of corporate finance job titles? What does a Treasurer truly do that a VP of Finance or Director of Finance doesn’t do? What is your real life experience with these titles?

Anonymous (Management Consultant) | Feb 12, 2015 Hey, where could I get job descriptions for atleast the major ones among these? Cheers

Randy Moore (CFO, SJB Bagel Makers of Boston) | Nov 24, 2014 I find that titles vary from one organization to another. One company's controller could be a CFO elsewhere and an accounting manager to someone else. I use them as a general indication of responsibility only. If you are looking for work, what matters is the job description and inquire as to its accuracy.

Christie Jahn (CFO, Prime Investments & Development) | Feb 12, 2015 I agree with Randy, the title depends on the company and the differences also based on the company. For job descriptions I always look on hiring sites, the will provide job descriptions for most titles. In looking for a Director of HR, I searched that title and read over several job descriptions and merged a couple together to create the job functions based on our needs.
