DEPARTMENT: Correctional Institute, Sumter County JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for guarding inmates at the county’s correctional institution in accordance to established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Oversees special functions such as inmate transport, facility sanitation and laundry services. MAJOR DUTIES: o Guards, monitors, searches, disciplines, and escorts inmates. o Observes inmates conduct and behavior to prevent escapes or disturbances. o Inspects locks, window bars, doors, grills, and gates for tampering; conducts outdoor perimeter security checks (e.g., parking lots and vehicles). o Searches inmates and dorms for contraband articles. o Guards and directs inmates during work assignments. o Performs mandatory headcounts. o Patrols facility for evidence of forbidden activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitudes or adjustment of prisoners. o Reports observations to superiors. o May escort inmates to authorized destinations inside and outside of the institution. o May employ weapons or force to maintain discipline and order among inmates if necessary. o Conducts random drug testing on inmates. o Conducts administrative segregation hearings. o May prepare written reports concerning incidences of inmate infractions, disturbances, or injuries.

Correctional Officer, Correctional Institute Page 2 o Assists in ensuring inmates receive proper care and treatment, including access to recreation time, barber services, visitations, food, toiletries, medical treatment, clean laundry, uniforms, etc. o Attends training sessions and staff meetings as required. o May oversee all functions of laundry services, including work detail supervision and receiving, marking, sorting, washing, drying, and distributing clothes and linen; monitors laundry room inventory, orders supplies as needed, and performs other related duties. o May oversee facility sanitation services; selects, guards, and supervises inmates involved in custodial care of the institution; inspects work for cleanliness, accuracy, and completeness; monitors cleaning supplies and materials inventory; dispenses same; order supplies and materials as needed. o May serve as the institution’s inmate transport officer; transports and escorts inmates from the institution to medical appointments and other approved locations; guards inmates at authorized off site locations and returns them to the institution as required. o Attends training sessions and staff meetings as required o Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: o Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws and department policies and procedures. o Knowledge of correctional institution administration, including safety and security. o Knowledge of Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures. o Knowledge of inmate rights. o Knowledge of illegal drugs and contraband. o Skill in the use of firearms specialized correctional institution security equipment. o Skill in decision making. o Skill in interpersonal relations. o Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES: Guidelines include federal and state laws, Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures, county ordinances, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related security and correctional duties. The variety of emergency situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work. SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform guard and security work on an assigned shift at the county’s correctional institution. Successful performance helps ensure effective and lawful correctional practices and promotes efficient functioning of shift operations. PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, inmates, other public safety and law enforcement personnel, health service providers, visitors, and support workers.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, must be able to distinguish between shades of color, and use physical force necessary to restrain persons. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a detention center or outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, infectious or contagious diseases, life-threatening situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has functional supervision over inmates. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: o Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Correctional Officer, Correctional Institute Page 4 o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's licenses issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. o This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass P.O.S.T. Certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within six months, but may be altered.
