MSL 5080, Methods of Analysis for Business Operations Course Syllabus

Course Description Practical examination of quantitative analysis techniques in strategic business decision making and the management of production and service operations. Introduces tools such as forecasting, decision analysis simulation, linear programming, and project management. These quantitative techniques assist managerial decision making in finance, marketing, quality assurance, service, and human resources.

Summarize the steps of the quantitative analysis approach. Identify and distinguish between the approaches to determining probability. Distinguish the major differences between the normal distribution and the exponential and Poisson distributions. Identify the major steps in decision making. Identify and explain two criteria for making decisions under uncertainty. Illustrate the various methods of decision making under risk. Assess the differences between correlation and causation. Generalize when simple linear regression and multiple regression techniques should be used. Differentiate between the various types of forecasting models. Identify the most fundamental problems of inventory control. Summarize the typical applications of linear programming. Discriminate between PERT and CPM's similarities and differences.

Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit.

Course Structure 1. Unit Learning Objectives: Each unit contains Unit Learning Objectives that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 2. Written Lectures: Each unit contains a Written Lecture, which discusses lesson material. 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. Supplemental Readings are provided in the unit study guides to aid students in their course of study. 4. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): These non-graded Learning Activities are provided to aid students in their course of study. 5. Key Terms: Key Terms are intended to guide students in their course of study. 6. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are a part of all CSU term courses. Information and specifications regarding these assignments are provided in the Academic Policies listed in the Course Menu bar. 7. Unit Assessments: This course contains eight Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of each unit. Assessments are composed of multiple-choice questions and written response questions. 8. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in each unit. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. 9. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 10. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates.

Unit Assignments Unit I Case Study Read the Case Study presented on page 19 of the textbook entitled “Food and Beverages at Southwestern University Football Games.” Thoroughly answer the Discussion Question using appropriate citations and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. Read the Case Study presented on page 65 of the textbook entitled “WTVX.” Thoroughly answer the Discussion Questions using appropriate citations and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. Both case studies should be answered in a minimum three- to four-page paper and appropriately cited using APA style. Unit II Case Study Read the Case Study on pages 110-111 of the textbook entitled “Starting Right Corporation.” Once you have finished reading the Case Study, answer the associated Discussion Questions 1-6 in a minimum threepage paper. Your paper should be appropriately cited using APA style. You should also include a minimum of two scholarly sources from the CSU Online Library. Unit III Case Study Read the Case Study on page 189 of the textbook on “Forecasting Attendance at SWU Football Games.” Thoroughly answer the three associated Discussion Questions using appropriate citation with clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. Read the Case Study on page 245 of the textbook on the “Martin-Pullin Bicycle Corporation.” Thoroughly answer the three associated Discussion Questions using appropriate citation with clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. Both Case Studies should be answered in a minimum three- to four-page paper and appropriately cited using APA style. Unit IV Case Study Read the Case Study on page 300 of the textbook on “Mexicana Wire Works.” Thoroughly answer the three associated Discussion Questions using appropriate citation and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. The Discussion Questions are provided on page 301. Read the Case Study on page 339 of the textbook on the “Chase Manhattan Bank.” Thoroughly answer the three associated Discussion Questions on page 339 using appropriate citation and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. Both case studies should be answered in a minimum three- to four-page paper using appropriate APA style.

Unit V Case Study Read the Case Study on page 391 of the textbook on “Andrew-Carter, Inc.” Thoroughly answer the two associated Discussion Questions using appropriate citation and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. Read the Case Study on page 425 of the textbook on the “Schank Marketing Research.” Thoroughly answer the two associated Discussion Questions on page 425 using appropriate citation and clearly delineated tables and graphs. Both case studies should be answered in a minimum three- to four-page paper using appropriate APA style. Unit VI Case Study Read the case study on page 456 of the textbook entitled “Southwestern University Traffic Problems.” As you read the case study, take notes on how the concepts with Network Modeling can lead you to develop effective solutions to the two associated Discussion Questions. Read the case study on page 494 of the textbook entitled “Southwestern University Stadium Construction.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Project Management can lead you to develop effective solutions to the three associated Discussion Questions. Read the case study on page 494 of the textbook entitled “Family Planning Research Center of Nigeria.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Project Management can lead you to develop effective solutions to the three Associated Discussion questions located on page 496. You are to answer TWO of the three case studies in a minimum three- to four-page paper. Use any tables, graphs, or charts that you deem necessary to support your response. Use appropriate APA style to cite any outside sources. Unit VII Case Study Read the Case Study on pages 530 to 531 of the textbook entitled “New England Foundry.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Queuing Theory can lead you to develop effective solutions to the two associated Discussion Questions. Read the Case Study on page 531 of the textbook entitled “Winter Park Hotel.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Queuing Theory can lead you to develop effective solutions to the two associated Discussion Questions. Read the Case Study on pages 570 to 571 of the textbook entitled “Alabama Airlines.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Simulation Modeling can lead you to develop effective solutions to the two associated Discussion Questions. Read the Case Study on pages 571 to 572 of the textbook entitled “Statewide Development Corporation.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Simulation Modeling can lead you to develop effective solutions to the two associated Discussion Questions. You are to answer TWO of the four Case Studies in a minimum three- to four-page paper. Use any tables, graphs, or charts that you deem necessary to support your response. Use appropriate APA style to cite any outside sources. Unit VIII Scholarly Activity For this assignment you are to write a culminating quantitative research report on the concepts and topics that you learned in this course. For this paper, you need to critique two or more research papers/journals that use quantitative research methods for business. Your paper needs to include the following items: 1. Abstract 2. Scale of Data Measurement a. Was it quantitative or qualitative? How did the researcher go about collecting the data?

3. Variations within the data a. Include the implications this may have for business methods. 4. Concluding results a. Critique the findings. What type of errors occurred in the research that may affect the outcome of the data? Is there any missing information that should be included? Discuss how you would approach the research and what type of questions you may ask. Your research report should be a minimum of eight pages with appropriate APA style and citation.

APA Guidelines CSU requires that students use the APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. A document titled “APA Guidelines Summary” is available for you to download from the APA Guide Link, found in the Learning Resources area of the myCSU Student Portal. It may also be accessed from the Student Resources link on the Course Menu. This document provides links to several internet sites that provide comprehensive information on APA formatting, including examples and sample papers.

CSU Grading Rubric for Papers/Projects The course papers will be graded based on the CSU Grading Rubric for all types of papers. In addition, all papers will be submitted for electronic evaluation to rule out plagiarism. Course projects will contain project specific grading criteria defined in the project directions.
