Programme Description:
Study Support (/en/art-designstudy-support) Evening course option in Llanelli now available for first time, as well as the day time options at the National Botanic Gardens. Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) courses are highly respected by the industry and are popular both with people wishing to pursue a career in

horticulture and also keen gardeners who want to learn more. Students on the courses at the Botanic Garden have access to the grounds, plants and facilities at the gardens to help in their learning. Those attending the evening course will visit other gardens during the course.
Programme Features:
Experienced lecturers from diverse backgrounds share their knowledge and skills to help you get to where you want to be. The qualification provides knowledge of the scientific principles which underpin horticultural practices. The qualification consists of four mandatory units which cover the following topics: Plant classification, structure and function Plant nutrition and the properties and management of soils and growing media Maintaining plant health through understanding pest, disease and weed lifecycles Principles and practices of plant propagation in horticulture
Progression and Employment:
Learners who have completed this course can go onto: RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance, which is especially popular with those wishing to study garden design RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture On successful completion of all three, students will gain the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of HorticultureThere are also options can go on to Level 3 at the same location. Thereafter, further options in Horticulture are available at other institutions.
Programme Content:
Mandatory units: Understanding garden features, plant selection and planning (5 credits) Understanding the choice, establishment and maintenance of garden plants and lawns (3credits) Understanding the production of outdoor vegetables and fruit (3 credits) Understanding protected environments and their use in plant cultivation (3 credits)
Method of Assessment
Each unit will be assessed by a separate written examination, set and marked by the RHS. Examinations are offered twice a year in February and June. Learners who have successfully completed all the mandatory units for the two theory-based Level 2 qualifications will be awarded the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture. Learners who have successfully completed all the mandatory units for the two theory-based Level 2 qualifications and the Level 2 Practical Certificate will be awarded the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have some work experience in the industry or be experienced gardeners. There are no academic entry qualifications for this course.
