...but one thing you have to remember, credit unions are not taking you for a ride on purpose if at all. When you become a member of a credit union, you essentially become a controlling owner. A credit union is a non-profit organization so there's no reason nor is there any desire to take members or fellow owners for "a ride."

This is opposed to a bank where profits from your being a customer are going to their high paid executives and ultimately to the stock holders. They are profit driven and have more of a motive to take advantage of their customers than a credit union would to its members.

To the OP: although I too usually recommend BECU, you may want to consider WSECU, and there is no harm in joining both. You'll find that most of your co-workers will be WSECU members. Joining a credit union only takes opening up a share account (a dividend-bearing savings account) which only requires a small opening balance --at BECU, I believe it's $5? In the old days, groups of employees at large institutional employers would band together to forum credit unions and to be a member, you first had to be a member of that employee group, i.e., Boeing workers, state workers, teachers, transit workers, city workers, hosptial workers, members of certain co-ops such as Group Health, etc., etc. When I was in high school, I worked for Frederick and Nelson, a large department store in the area and they even had a credit union that employees organized. That's why you'll notice that long-time employees of the UW will be WSECU members. Nowadays, most credit unions have opened their membership to just about anybody living in their particular state.

WSECU is the second largest credit union in Washington state and is headquartered in Olympia where the bulk of its members reside. As with BECU, WSECU is a member of a cooperative network that allows you to use other member credit unions and ATMs across the country for routine transactions. So even if you are a BECU member, for instance, you can use WSECU for deposits, withdrawls, etc. and vise versa but some transactions may have fees, however. They will both be part of the network to basically use the same ATMs. In the scheme of things, credit unions make more sense than banks because of the primary reason that you becoming a limited controlling member of the organization itself.

As poopskooper points out, there is a national network of shared branching for credit unions. I moved to TX nine years ago and still use WSECU for virtually all of our banking and loans, been a member since the mid 90's. Most transactions can be handled online or over the phone but when I do have a brick and mortar transaction I just use the credit union near my home in Houston, no fees.

BECU sure gets a lot of love here but I have no experience with them. The service at WSECU has always been top-notch so I've never had a reason to leave them. 07-29-2013, 10:10 AM

Your car would get you 2.34% at BECU, 1.99% at SECU. (See car age provisions and this is assuming your credit score is excellent) If it's a hybrid, at SECU it's 1.49% When it comes to great loan rates, it's hard to beat SECU's rates. And their fees are also hard to beat.. 07-29-2013, 04:23 PM

I'm looking for something that will net me low APR for my 08 Civic, mastercard/visa debit card that's flexible and safe for all around usage, free checking, ability to monitor and change my finances online and one that lets you skip a payment during the holiday's or for emergency. Which would suite me best? 05-03-2014, 08:32 AM

Regional Banks?

Been searching around a bit and found 3 banks that support both Oly and Seattle, Columbia Bank, Washington Federal and Wells Fargo. Would like to strike the last one, so looking for thoughts on Columbia or Washington Federal. Look like both have several branches in those areas, ATM's, etc. Once we get more familiar with the area we could look into a Credit Union, but want to start off with regionally based banks over a few states if we can.
