Culture in the Age of Globalization
Within the field of cultural history, studies of the Middle East have been concerned with issues of the Westernization of culture and efforts at articulating authenticity in the age of globalization. But the cultural scene has also been characterized by hybridity of cultural forms of expression, grounded in local history yet drawing on wider aesthetics and circulation networks. Art has played a role in processing collective trauma and memory as well as in forwarding various political ideologies. Popular forms of culture have been used to express resistance to occupation, to patriarchal society, and to authoritarian regimes. How have different modes of cultural expressions in the 20th century dealt with issues of identity? What social and political issues have they forwarded? What role do the Gulf States play in organizing artistic circulations of capital? And how have the cultural field been used by states and political parties to articulate and spread their ideologies?
Some general themes for master’s theses under this rubric include: -
Artistic expression and armed conflict
