B.

Operating Systems

During the period 1970-1973, his research was associated with the SUE operating systems project covering several issues of operating systems design. He was one of the initiators of the project and author of one of the first books on operating systems, published by Academic Press. Examples: Sevcik, K. C. and Atwood, J. W. and Grushcow, M. S. and Holt, R. C. and Horning, J. J. and Tsichritzis, D.: SUE as a Learning Experience, Proceedings Fall Joint Computer Conference, 1972, pp. 331-338. Operating Systems, Academic Press, 1974, 298 pages, translated in Russian and Japanese. 3

C.

Data Base Management Systems

In 1973-1980, he led one of the pioneering research groups in data base management research. He was initiator and participant of many projects in the field of relational data base systems. The MRS system was on of the first Unix based data base management systems. This system has been distributed widely around the world and is now commercially available under the name EMPRESS (Rhodnius Corp.) The LSL data base system was a basis of a system further developed by a company in Japan. The paper on functional dependencies was one of the first in Functional Dependency Theory. He wrote two books on this subject, published by Academic Press and Prentice Hall. Examples: Bernstein, P., Swenson J. R., Tsichritzis, D.: A Unified Approach to Functional Dependencies and Relations, 1975, Proceedings of the ACM SIGMOD Conference, on Management of Data, pp. 237-245. Tsichritzis, D.: LSL: A Link and Selector Language, Proceedings of the ACM SIGMOD Conference, on Management of Data, 1976, pp. 123-134. Book: Tsichritzis, D., Lochovsky, F.: Data Base Management Systems, Academic Press, 1977, 388 pages, translated in Japanese and Czech. Ting. P. T., Tsichritzis, D.: A Micro-DBMS for a Distributed Data Base, 1978, Fourth International Conference on Very Large Data Bases, West Berlin, Germany, pp. 200-206. Book: Tsichritzis, D., Lochovsky F., Data Models, Prentice Hall, 1982, 381 pages.

D.

Office Automation

From 1980-1985, he carried out research in the area of office automation. An integrated office automation system was developed, which provided form management, data base management, electronic mail and word processing on personal computers. Models were developed for the design and analysis of office systems. A prototype was built which was one of the first multimedia office filing systems. The results of this research are summarized in a book by Springer Verlag. Examples: Tsichritzis, D.: Form Management, Journal of Communications of the ACM, J No. 7, Vol. 25, 1982, pp. 453-478. Tsichritzis, D., Christodoulakis, S.: Message Files, Journal of ACM Transactions on Office Information Systems, No. 1, Vol. 1, 1983, pp. 88-98.
