Two visions, two bodies, two monologues on how their love has come to an end. Armed with words like glistening knives and bearing each other’s heavy silences, the lovers negotiate their separation in a mental and emotional dance. In this moving, visceral play, we see a couple’s final confrontation, and we are invited to observe what happens in Clôture de l’amour, the end of love. --

Pascal Rambert is an award-winning French writer, choreographer and director for the stage and screen. Rambert’s plays and choreography have been staged throughout Europe, North America, Asia, Russia, South America and the Middle East. He created Clôture de l’amour for the 65th Festival d’Avignon in 2011, and it has since been performed more than 150 times in France, and in more than ten languages around the world. 13

The awe-inspiring Syrian actress Nanda Mohammed returns to Cairo with a powerful act, a reflection on our responses to what happens in the world today. Written and directed by: Henri jules Julien With Nanda Mohammad and David Chiesa (double bass) Lighting: Christophe Cardoen Arabic translation: Shadi El Hosseiny English translation: Philip Sewell “We, living in European cities, because we are rich, don’t we have a share of responsibility in the disasters that occur far away from home?” says a woman onstage to the audience. She discusses the question again but with small variations, replacing the word “we” with “they.” If the meaning of words and ideas describing the world seems selfevident, the same words should have the same meaning regardless of where they are uttered, and by whom. -Henri jules Julien is a theatre director and producer at Ateliers de la Creation for France Culture radio. He is the author of Défrichage sonore, and has translated works by young Arab poets. Nanda Mohammad is a Syrian actress living in Cairo. She recently performed in Ahmed El Attar’s The Last Supper, Laila Soliman’s Whims of freedom and Omar Abusaada’s While I was waiting. Christophe Cardoen creates installations using light, movement, and sound. He stages his creations in theatres, galleries, museums, and disused places around the world. David Chiesa feeds his musical work with his relationship with other artistic practices. He has had long-term collaborations with musicians such as Jean Luc Guionnet, Mathieu Werchowski and others. He is the founder of UN Ensemble.

Project 99 is the result of the collaboration between poet and rapper Marc Nammour and music composer Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch. Created as part of the research and creation process of transcultural musics at the Royaumont Foundation, the performance takes place in a great Cartesian momentum, where the French administration puts all French residents and nationals born abroad under the ‘99’ number as identification. For the administration, 99 is a ghost department and nobody knows where it begins or where it ends; consisting of 99 languages, 99 cultures and 99 horizons. In this classification, the poet attempts to draw interrogation of identity, or identities. Being born within the 99 system, specifically in Lebanon, the poet’s sole desire is for his words to speak, not disguise or harm. He then invites musicians aware of the relation between music and poetry, entrusting composer Lorenzo, another 99 member, with the musical direction of the creation. -Marc Nammour is a poet and rapper born in Beirut in 1978. He moved to France in 1986 after his family fled the civil war, and worked at a factory for a while before going to Paris to get into music. He founded La Canaille in 2003, alongside Jérôme Voisin, Valentin Durupe and Alexis Bossard. Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch is a composer and electronic music artist who composes and performs solo or with other musicians and real-time processing in concerts, albums, installations, theatre, images, dance performances and films. Amir ElSaffar is an Iraqi musician, composer and improvisor born in Chicago 1977. He’s a trumpet and santur player and vocals with a transcultural stance that combines Middle-Eastern music with American Jazz. Jérôme Boivin is a musician and actor who studied piano and contrabass at the 10th Arrondissement Conservatoire of Paris. He stars as a musician and comedian in Gildas Milin’s plays The man of February, Weak Force and Gérard Watkin.

For the 2017 edition, D-CAF seeks to tread new ground by combining the festival’s separate film and literature programme sections. This new section will focus on screening some of the most famous films adapted from theatre plays, and will be holding masterclasses featuring artists and professional filmmakers, along with play readings of translated scripts in public spaces. This new Film & Literature Programme aims to educate and engage with the audience differently; it’s not only screening films to passive receivers, but opening up new horizons and raising awareness on how other artistic forms (literature and theatre) can be combined and adapted to produce great works of art. The programme fulfills D-CAF’s goal in challenging both audiences and the conventions of the cultural sector by offering new avenues of exchange between the audience and the artists and support to local talents. In 2017, not only does D-CAF aim to program award-winning international films, but also works on bringing in the best films discussing key issues in the world today such as immigration, conflict and cultural understanding. The Film & Literature programme is curated by Isabelle Fauvel (Intiative Film).
Film & literature programme curator isabelle fauvel (FRANCE) After having worked at Flach Film and gathered experience as a producer, Isabelle Fauvel created Initiative Film in 1993. Since, she is the privileged partner of writers, directors and producers for all matters of projects and talents development around the following activities : talent scouting, subject research in literature, consulting, story editing and insightful advising during the whole project gestation period. Throughout her career, Isabelle has worked alongside some of the world’s most acclaimed directors today like Tran Anh Hung (Vietnam), Mohamed Diab (Egypt), Amr Salama (Egypt), Sofia Exarchou (Greece), Burhan Qurbani (Afghanistan), Yahya Al Abdallah (Palestine - Jordan), Martin Provost (France), Razvan Radulesci (Romania), Hicham Ayouch (Morocco), Guillaume Senez (Belgium) and Kaouther Ben Hania (Tunisia).

Adapted from Evelyne de la Cheneliere’s play, Bachir Lazhar depicts the encounter between two distant worlds and the power of self-expression. Using great sensitivity and humor, Philippe Falardeau follows a humble man who is ready to transcend his own loss in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death. Philippe Falardeau is a Canadian film director and screenwriter. His first feature film, The Left-Hand Side of the Fridge (La Moitié gauche du frigo) (2000) won “Best Canadian First Feature” at the Toronto International Film Festival and a Best Screenplay nomination at the Quebec-based Jutra Awards. Évelyne de la Chenelière is a Canadian writer & actress. She is best known for her plays Désordre public, which won the Governor General’s Award for French-language drama in 2006, and Bashir Lazhar, which was the screenplay basis for this 2011 film. Wajdi Mouawad is a Lebanese-Canadian writer, actor and director. He is most known for his work in the Canadian and French theatre. Film adaptations are rather unrecognizable by the audience, while theater adaptation can be almost obsolete. Thus, embarking on the adventure of adapting a novel for the screen, a professional has to know the rules and respect the journey. This masterclass will answer the questions that a producer, a screenwriter or a director need to ask themselves when confronted by adaptation. Initiative Film by Isabelle Fauvel and D-CAF have decided to program two emblematic films which also, in their own way, address the relationship between Canada and the Arab world.
Isabelle Fauvel founded Initiative Film in 1993. She is a key partner for literary adaptation and is active as a tutor and course leader. She recently created Socrates, a training workshop aimed at story editors from the SouthMediterranean region. She is a partner and co-founder of Adapt Lab, a branch of the TorinoFilmLab. Hakim Mao comes from a technical background; after an Audiovisual Technical Degree in editing and postproduction, he attended the Cinema Section at the Louis Lumière National Film School in Paris, where he wrote and directed several short-movies. While working on several film projects, Hakim is currently a Project Manager at Initiative Film, where he works for both the Development Department and the International Training Missions. It is recommended that participants attend Incendies and Monsieur Lazhar screenings before the masterclass.
