We all know Headphones and amps need burn in to sound optimum. Does a DAC need burn in time too? If so what generally happens to them during the burn in process?

Many people report that DAC's do burn in....what happens during the process? im not certian...my theory is that the caps burn in like they do in an amp, same with the DAC chip and pcb traces....i dont know as much as most of these guys here so dont quote me on it...

even cables go through the burn in process.

i suppose that there'll always be an argument, debating whether burn in is real or not. many people believe that all materials settle in a little when they have a current run through them. they may change a little bit, thus changing the sound. others believe that burn in is just your head getting used to the sound. as for me, just let your ears decide for themselves. cheers...

I've had some DACs new and never heard much a difference past the first hour or so. I haven't been able to compare a used one to a new one but the first few mins they seem to go through some changes and then settle down. After a hour no changes perceived.

thats what the debate is all over, and as some guy posted above, theres multiple theories...an old EPI speaker manual i have says to gradually raise the volume while breaking in the drivers.... I personally am a believer, I ve seen a change in headphones and amps as they age.....thats IMO

Speakers and headphones do have a break in period (this can be measured) but those are mechanical devices with moving parts. What exactly is there to break in on solid-state component like a DAC let alone a cable

Definitely experienced 'burn-in' with my Cambridge 840c. Very noticeable sound change. On the box it says to expect 36hrs playtime to reach optimal performance but for me the biggest sound change was after around 20hrs. Not much after then. Didn't notice much 'burn-in' with my Arietta amp or HD580s.
Source: Cambridge 840c, MHDT Havana Headphones: Sennheiser HD 580, Koss KSC 75, Shure E3. Speakers: Genelec 8020a Amp: Meier Arietta Cables: HOSA!!!! Generic optical and coaxial cables.
