(left to right) Back Row: Melissa Green, NHS Advisor, Emily Sutherland, Tristen Merrill, Carmen Cruz. Front Row: Cesar Coyote Medina, Gabrielle Rowley, Shantal Herrera Olivo, Joelle Provino.

Seven Mount Morris Central School students have been inducted into the Mount Morris National Honor Society. Students inducted into this year’s National Honor Society include: junior Cesar Coyote Medina, and sophomores Gabrielle Rowley, Joelle Provino, Emily Sutherland, Tristen Merrill, Carmen Cruz, and Shantal Herrera Olivo. Mount Morris National Honor Society Seniors also received their gold honor cords for graduation during the ceremony. Those seniors included: Ethan Carlock, Lillian Bacon, Selena LaBarbera, Grace Rowley, Lucy Sweeney, and Nelly Lin. At the present time, post-graduation plans for the Mount Morris Seniors are as follows: Ethan Carlock, Mount Morris’ 2017 Salutatorian, will be attending the University of Buffalo studying Mechanical Engineering. Lillian Bacon will be attending Kings College studying Politics, Philosophy, Economics and Pre-Law. Selena LaBarbera will be attending Keuka College studying General Psychology. Grace Rowley will be attending SUNY Geneseo studying Biology. Lucy Sweeney will be attending Keuka College studying Occupational Therapy. Nelly Lin, Mount Morris’ 2017 Valedictorian, will be attending SUNY Geneseo where she will be studying Biology/Pre-Med. Selection and continued membership in the National Honor Society are based on scholarship, service, leadership and character. Selection is an honor bestowed on the student. The Scholarship standard is based on a student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) beginning in grade seven and continuing through the end of the first semester of their current grade. The service standard is, on average, thirty (30) hours of documented service each school year as a National Honor Society member. Hours per school year will fluctuate depending on the grade level of the inductee. A total of ninety (90) hours is required by March of the student’s senior year for the student to receive an NHS gold cord for graduation ceremonies. Classroom, school, and peer leadership are considered for the leadership qualification. Classroom leadership is defined as positively influencing others to do their best, taking challenging academic courses, and going beyond what is expected. School leadership is based on participation in extracurricular activities. Character is evaluated based on the following definition: The student of character demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability. He/she shows courtesy and concern for others; upholds school regulations and observes instructions and rules both in and outside the classroom. Two Mount Morris students were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) this spring. Those students were Christian Passamonte for Computer Information Systems, and Spencer DiSalvo for Conservation. NTHS Membership Standards: Students must attain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (unweighted).  Students must be enrolled in a career/technical education program or major.  Congratulations Mount Morris NHS/NTHS Blue Devils!

Back: Katie Warren, Justin Martin, Emily Sutherland, Isaiah Kenney, Nogah Pescini, Kirsten Rivera Front: Lee Lonsberry, Joelle Provino, Carley Jo Jackson, Alexis Peck, Gabbi Rowley, Carmen Cruz, Sharon Brown, Rep. Rob Bishop Eleven sophomores, along with advisor Sharon Brown, traveled to Washington D.C. in early March to participate in the Close-Up program. The Close-Up Foundation is a civics education group that brings students from around the country to Washington D.C. for a weeklong intensive study of government, current issues and civic responsibility. While on program, students attended small workshops and seminars, visited museums and toured the monuments. Tours were set up to reinforce the topic of discussion for that day. When studying the presidency, they visited the presidential memorials. On foreign policy day, the students toured the war memorials. A highlight of the trip was Capitol Hill Day. Students were able to sit in on a Senate committee hearing about STEM grants for schools, which they found very interesting. They toured the Supreme Court and while in the Capitol they visited the Senate gallery. They were lucky to see all the Senators as they came in for a vote. The students received a tour of the Capitol Building, which was arranged by Congressman Collins office. The scheduled meeting with Rep. Collins unfortunately had to be cancelled since he was stranded in New York due to the snowstorm. The group met with former MMCS student, Lee Lonsberry, who is the Director of Communications for Rep. Rob Bishop of Utah. Lee talked with students about his job and encouraged students to dream big about their future. Congressman Bishop very kindly stopped in to speak to the MMCS students and answered their questions. When students were asked about the trip, they all agreed that they had fun, learned so much about government, and their own thoughts about these issues. The Close-Up trip is a tremendous enrichment opportunity for our students. Fall Sports Sign-Ups Have Begun

Athletic Reminders If you plan on participating in fall athletics you must complete your athletic triplicate forms and return them to Mr. Hamilton. Mount Morris Central School is offering a wide variety of sports this fall and would love to see our students participate!

Section V Sportsmanship Summit The Annual Section V Sportsmanship Summit took place on Wednesday, April 5th at SUNY Geneseo. Freshman athletes Taylor Steen, Jansel Martinez, Joey Pagano, Luis Saez, Ryan Morgan and Jose Coyote-Medina participated in this special event. During the Section V Sportsmanship Summit, studentathletes learn the importance of leadership, teamwork and decision making. Section V’s very own Mr. Scott Fitch and Mr. Anthony Jordan were the keynote speakers. Coach Fitch spoke about current social media issues through his Pause Before You Post presentation. Mr. Jordan was a standout football player at East High School and also played college football at Kansas State before playing three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. “Mr. Jordan challenged all in attendance to evaluate their current practices and open their eyes to how they can reach the pinnacle or apex of their perspective career paths, first by creating well-organized goals and secondly by letting nothing stand in their way,” said Jesse Hamilton, MMCSD Athletic Director. Mr. Jordan also explained how to become an inspirational leader by taking what you have learned and applying it by giving back to your own families, schools and/or communities as he currently does.

Spring Athletics Summary Although the weather has not been cooperative, our spring athletic teams are off and running. Our participation numbers for baseball, golf, track and softball are the strongest they’ve been in years. It is great to see such a large turn-out of athletic participants. We encourage all interested students to participate in athletics.

Mount Morris Central School Spring Lock-In In March, the Mount Morris High School Student Council hosted the first annual Spring Lock-In. The Spring Lock-In was the idea of Student Council President Lillian Bacon and Vice President Nicholas Torcello. The concept was born earlier in the school year when plans began forming for the annual Winter White-Out. The Winter White-Out is considered one of the best days of the school year by the students, it is a mandatory day for students as it takes place during the regular school day. The concept was to create a completely voluntary event that takes place outside of the school day. Bacon and Torcello got right to work on the planning. Google Forms were sent out to each student in the high school asking if a Lock-In would be something that sparked their interest as well as what activities they were interested in. “We immediately got an overwhelming response,” said Torcello. “Everyone seemed very excited about the idea of a Lock-In.” The night began at 10:00 p.m. and lasted until 7:00 a.m. the next morning. Activities included mini golf, kick ball, water polo, ghosts in the graveyard, capture the flag, board games, and a dance party. Pizza, chips, and drinks were also served. “I thought that the lock-in went extremely well for its inaugural year,” said Bacon. “It was more fun because it gave the opportunity for the students and teachers to be in a completely stress free and fun environment.” Dr. Chenaille and the Student Council have spent a good deal of time trying to incorporate events that improve on school culture by bringing students and teachers together. According to Bacon, prior to the event students were expressing concern about falling asleep during the event as this was something they had never participated in; however, once the night started, students were so entertained by activities almost no one fell asleep. Looking forward to upcoming years, Bacon and Torcello agreed that the main change that Student Council should make to the Spring Lock-In is shortening the hours. According to Bacon and Torcello, about 90 students participated in the Spring Lock-In. “I would always like to see more people participate but I am very happy with the amount of people that came,” said Bacon. “I want to appeal to all of the students in some way. I want to talk to the kids that didn’t come, find out why, and do whatever I can to make them want to come next year.” In order to attend the Spring Lock-In, there was a $15 fee and a permission slip signed by a parent was required. All proceeds helped fund the 7-12 School Picnic at Letchworth State Park in May.

Born to Run Mount Morris Elementary School participated in its second year of Girls on the Run! The Girls on the Run program includes a curriculum that teaches girls to be healthy, joyful, and confident. The program runs for 10 weeks, meeting twice a week and the culminating activity is a 5K run. “Girls also have a community impact project, which is a type of service project that they complete during the ten weeks,” said Cassie Montemarano, Coach for Girls Grades 3-5. Grades 3-5 had ten students participate this year including Shaniese and Shayla Brown, Kaylee Hadfield, Kayleah Rodriguez, Ashlyn Kingston, Abby Provo, Luci Guilano, Maya Kleisley, Hannah McKenzie, Elizabeth Moses. Heart & Sole is Girls on the Run’s new program for middle school girls! This year’s coaches, Melissa Green (Head Coach), and Liz Becker (Head Coach), offered the Heart and Sole program that includes girls grades 6-8. The students that participated this year include Jasmine Follett-Martes, Taylor Freeman, Leah Gehrig, Anastasia Megliore, Chloe Mike, Emily Mike, Nicaile Perez Silva, Portia Stoddard, Melania VanAernam, and Cierra White. “Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond,” said Green. The Heart & Sole curriculum is rich with themes girls can relate to, addressing the whole girl – body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection –and building important life skills such as team building, developing a support system, boundary setting, decision making, asking for and providing help and more. This 10-week program is accessible to all girls regardless of athletic ability or fitness level and considers the range of ages and varied experiences of middle schoolers. Physical activity includes strength and conditioning appropriate for this age group. “The season culminates with the Girls on the Run 5k, which is the celebratory event that underscores the confidence, competence, connection, character and caring they’ve been developing in the program and gives them a tangible sense of goal setting and achievement,” said Green.

Mock Trial 2017 We all know the story of Jack and Jill. Jack and Jill went up a hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. But new details have emerged that make this story a little more complicated. Mr. Miller, local property and well owner, created an attractive nuisance when he continued to let kids come onto his property to take water from his well. After Jack and Jill’s accident, Mr. Miller claimed that he did not allow kids on his property and that ‘No Trespassing’ signs were posted. Eight Mount Morris fifth grade students intended to prove that Mr. Miller was responsible for the accident. In its inaugural year, Mount Morris CSD was the plaintiff competing against the defense, Alexander Central School. Letchworth Central School resided as the jury. The organizers of this event were Wayne Swede (Dean of Students), Liz Becker (6th Grade Teacher), and Dave Provo. “We have a bunch of very dedicated students,” said Swede. “This will help with confidence in each of the students, especially when it comes to public speaking.” “Among other things, this experience will help students appreciate the importance of people in a court room and it will also give them practice with communication and their critical thinking skills when presenting the case,” said Swede, also a Deputy for the Livingston County Sheriff Department. Students that participated in the mock trial included: Mia Valentin, Emma Brickwood, Jamie Hale, Quinn Simons, Emelia Clester, Tyler Gaddy, Owen Yencer, and Tyler Guzzardi. The trial took place at the Wyoming County Courthouse on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Sixth grade marks the end of a chapter for Mount Morris Central School students. Each June, our 6th graders walk the stage as they celebrate with family and friends, and prepare for the next step in their educational journey. It’s a time of pride, joy, and anticipation. Each year the team of 6th grade teachers works hard to prepare a ceremony like no other. It’s a ceremony that is completely facilitated by the students. The students take the mic to lead the audience in the pledge, introduce performers, and invite the special adults to announce awards. The students are polished and take this job very seriously. The release of responsibility onto the students is very symbolic as the students transition to 7th grade. Unlike other elementary grades, the 6th grade team spends the year grooming the students for increased independence. Our elementary students turn into young adults, and the ceremony is a perfect reminder of this. Congratulations to the Class of 2023! Always remember to Dare to be Excellent!

IT TAKES COURAGE TO GROW UP AND BECOME WHO YOU REALLY ARE. 23

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
