Business Administrative Services Course Descriptions Certificate of Program Completion (Catalog Year: 2018) BTEC 0000 - Business Orientation

The Business Technology program provides students with the skills necessary to begin employment in a variety of business settings. Students will become proficient in business communication, office applications, and interpersonal skills. Once these fundamental skills are in place, students may specialize their studies in one of the following high demand business fields: accounting technician, administrative professional, or small business specialist.



BTEC 1030 - Operating Systems and Email Applications

30 Hours

In this course students will learn essential skills needed to successfully use a computer in school and at work. They will learn how to maneuver within the Windows environment through hands-on activities; including, launching programs, working with windows and the taskbar to enable multitasking, customizing the desktop, and managing files. Students will learn to use both a USB drive and the cloud for file storage. Finally, students will learn how to use the Internet to efficiently search for information on the Web and send and receive email.



BTEC 1023 - Business Calculations

60 Hours

This course prepares students to perform basic business math calculations using the touch method on the 10-key calculator and a spreadsheet application. These calculations include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, fractions, and combining operations. Attention will be given to speed and accuracy on the 10-key and basic spreadsheet formulas.



BTEC 1005 - Keyboarding I

30 Hours

This course provides an introduction to the computer keyboard and is designed to help the student develop proper keyboarding techniques, with an emphasis on increasing keyboarding speed and accuracy to a minimum job-market level of 40 wpm. Students will be given intensive skill building practice using drills and timed writings.



BTEC 1134 - Word Processing Applications I (MS Word 2016)

90 Hours

This course focuses on basic word processing features used in creating and managing business documents in Word 2016. You will create new documents, as well as modify existing documents. You will practice formatting text, paragraphs, and sections to create professional business documents. You will learn how to enhance those documents by inserting and customizing visual elements, such as, tables, lists, shapes, SmartArt graphics, and images. You will also use the reference options to organize and improve readability with endnotes, footnotes, citations, and captions. This course prepares students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Exam for Word 2016.



BTEC 1174 - Email Applications (MS Outlook 2016)

90 Hours

This course focuses on basic E-mail features used in creating, sending, and receiving E-mail messages in Outlook 2016. Practical business applications involving managing E-mail messages, contacts, tasks, notes, and journal entries, as well as using the calendar features, will be covered. This course prepares students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Exam for Outlook 2016.



BTEC 1603 - Accounting for Non Accountants

60 Hours

This course is an introduction to basic accounting principles for all students including those who do not plan to pursue a career in accounting. It provides step-by-step guidance on completing each stage in the accounting cycle. The course includes a comprehensive capstone project that will assess students’ ability to evaluate, record, and understand transactions and financial statements.

Students in this course will learn and develop the skills and attitudes necessary to build strong customer relations and provide outstanding customer service in a diverse workplace serving a diverse population. Students will be able to define exceptional customer service and identify the benefits of both internal and external service environments. Students will also learn how a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis relates to developing a customer service strategy. This course covers how time, stress, and anger management relate to customer service.

Accounting II builds on the Accounting I experiences to broaden the student’s accounting skill set through hands-on exercises and problems, web-based assignments/quizzes, and online resources. Students will work with internal control of cash, receivables, liabilities, and payroll accounting. The course concludes with exercises in adjusting entries, financial statements, and closing procedures.



BTEC 1635 - Accounting III

60 Hours

Accounting III builds on the Accounting II experiences to broaden the student’s accounting skill set through hands-on exercises and problems, web-based assignments/quizzes, and online resources. In this course, students will practice accounting for: Accounts Receivable, Uncollectible Accounts, Notes Payable, and Notes Receivable. They will also learn the processes of managing assets, resources, and accounting information systems.



BTEC 1606 - QuickBooks Pro

90 Hours

This course is for small business owners who want to automate their bookkeeping functions. The course provides the basics of the QuickBooks application for small business owners who do not have or need skills as a trained accountant. This hands-on course trains the small business owner on how to set up and maintain the financial processes within the business using QuickBooks. Areas covered include Payroll, Inventory, and Job/Time Tracking. Students will learn how to customize company file reports, graphs invoices, letters, and fiscal year closing. Students use the QuickBooks application to practice the functions and features and to complete problems and case studies using sample QuickBooks companies.



BTEC 1640 - Understanding Financial Statements

45 Hours

This course prepares the student to analyze and interpret the information contained in financial documents. This skill is vital in making business decisions based on the financial strengths and weaknesses of a company. Students will study fundamental concepts and use simple tools to apply this knowledge to income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Students will demonstrate the relationship between these critical financial statements.



BTEC 1662 - Payroll

45 Hours

Payroll is a hands-on course designed to help students understand the payroll process from various perspectives including human resources, payroll clerks, payroll officers, and accountants responsible for general journal entries. Students use real-world applications to gain experience in performing actual payroll functions. Students complete a payroll comprehensive project using QuickBooks, where they handle all payroll work for a small company during a three month period. This work includes sole responsibility for all payroll work in preparing twelve weekly payrolls and completion of end-of-quarter and end-of-year procedures.
