Content Standards:

ACTFL Standards: 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2, 5.2

Overview: Students use the products from the suitcase and additional resources to develop an appreciation and better understanding of how many Hispanics commemorate and honor the dead.

Objectives/ Essential Questions: 1. ¿Qué celebran los mexicanos en el día de los muertos? 2. ¿Cuáles son los elementos y símbolos importantes que definen esta celebración? 3. ¿Cómo se comparan las celebraciones de Halloween y el día de los muertos? 4. ¿Cómo es distinta la perspectiva de la muerte que tienen los hispanos de nuestra comunidad? Activating Strategy: As students enter Teacher will have altar items from the suitcase set up on display in room. As a simple way to introduce students to new vocabulary, ask students (in the TL) to select the symbols on the interactive white board (or overhead) what symbols they associate with death. Ask: ¿Qué símbolos asocia nuestra comunidad con la muerte?

Review the terms that they circled and ask what other words in Spanish that they know that they can use to talk about the dead. Record these on board. Ask: ¿Cuáles son otras palabras en español que podemos usar para hablar de la muerte?

Skills Students will be able to…

Teacher shows 8 photographs (from Natl. Geo.). Show one at a time. (Slides: 1, 3-6, 8-10)

Writing activity: Teacher asks students to write down write down one sentence in Spanish to describe each picture. Students should use the vocabulary that they know. (colors, emotions, clothing, items, time of day) Have students share their sentences with a partner. Select a few to summarize for the class.

Vocabulary related to understanding the origin and products of the Day of the Dead.

(Depending on class size, the teacher may divide the class into two groups A/B. The worksheet is designed to work as stations. This will reduce the number of people around the altar at the same time.) Students will complete the vocabulary section on the worksheet (Both sides A and B). On side A, teacher will guide students through the discovery of the meaning of the words by using the contextualized sentences. On side B, students will use the online glossary from AZ Central. Side A will complete the origins videos/ comparisons. Side B will look at the altar and use the infographic to explain the meaning behind five items found on the altar. Side B should complete Side A before completing the Reflexión activity.

Once all groups have had a chance to complete all the activities on Side A and the altar on Side B, teacher may choose to do the Reflexión as a class.

Reflection: Students write about someone that they would chose to honor and what ofrendas they would place on an altar. Students watch the animated digital short, Día de los muertos. Students then respond to the prompt: ¿Cómo es distinta la perspectiva de la muerte que tienen los mexicanos de la nuestra?
