.....PARTY (and live your life) LIKE IT’S 1899!!! As 1999 is coming to a close and the year 2000 is drawing near, we may hear a lot of a song by Prince, now known as The Artist, entitled “1999”. The song was originally released in the 1980’s, yet it foretold of the hype and hoopla that would accompany the events that will take place on New Year’s Eve. One of the hot topics of discussion is the potential Y2K problem. Whether this problem materializes or not, we have advanced a great deal in technology. You can do almost anything by computer now, from researching information on almost any subject to even purchasing a car! While the world has been increasing and advancing in the technology arena, we have also witnessed a great deal of tragedy. The school shootings in Colorado and elsewhere, the violence against postal workers and
more recently the shooting in Georgia by a stressed trader. I even had a school shooting occur less than twenty miles from my home that resulted in the death of a middle school teacher. Do I think there is a link? YOU BET! With all the technology, we are forgetting touch, the human touch, which may be why we are witnessing such tragedies. Starting with the basics of even a handwritten note versus an e-mail, we need to be more personal in our communications with one another. Perhaps, if someone had reached out to these people with a kind word or gentle hand, maybe these situations would have turned out a little differently. A few days ago, I had the opportunity to speak oneon-one to a brother who was experiencing some difficulties. He let me know
that he had experienced a not so nice childhood and family life. I let him know that he was a part of another family...my family, The Delta Chi Family, and that we cared about him and that we were there for him. So before you send that next e-mail, stop to consider if it would be better to spend the extra time and money and pick up the phone. Even better, if the person is in the same town, or even one or two towns away, wouldn’t it be better to speak to that person face-toface? I am so glad that I did! As we become the lions of the technological arena, let us become the lions and leaders of the human arena and not forget that a simple gesture such as a reassuring voice, touch or spoken word of encouragement can make all the difference in not only our brothers’ lives, but also in the lives of all with whom we come in contact. I am not afraid to say in front of all: I LOVE YOU MY BROTHERS! I will not let a computer stand in the way of my feelings and emotions. I hope you do the same.

The College started on Friday afternoon, August 6, with a general welcome to all attendees, both undergraduates and alumni, as well as introductions by Mike Arrillaga, Idaho ’96, College Administrator. Following introductions, Mary Peterson, president of MP Consulting and Associate Director of the Office of Student Life at the University of Iowa took the podium to present the opening session. Mary carries with her a very open and direct style of presenting and her opening session was no exception. Mary challenged all attendees to
faculty again. In Chip’s session, he walked the attendees through his 8 step model of effective leadership and provided the attendees with ideas on how to move the chapter in a positive direction on issues such as alcohol abuse, poor facilities, abuse of members and guests, lack of alumni volunteerism and academic non-performance. Following Chip was Mike McRee, Greek Advisor at the University of Oregon. Mike presented a very powerful presentation titled, “Press your luck….” The presentation focused on returning to the founding values and principles on which Delta Chi was founded. Mike stressed that our day to day activities should be influenced by our values, principles and Ritual. On Friday evening, all attendees were invited to the Headquarters for a reception and a tour of the facility. One of the highlights of attending the Jackson Leadership College was the opportunity to visit the Headquarters and see some of the original documents and Ritual paraphernalia. Many brothers commented on how exciting it was to get a glimpse of what our Founders were thinking when they started Delta Chi back in 1890. After the tour of Headquarters, Dick McKaig, Ball State ’66, pre-

sented a session that got the attendees thinking and required them to use their decision-making skills. Dick McKaig has served as the Dean of the Jackson Leadership College from year to year. Delta Chi and the Delta Chi Educational Foundation wish to thank Dick for his continued, invaluable service. Dick has a tremendous amount of experience and was able to offer valuable insight and perspective into the Greek movement. Saturday, August 7, was a very busy day for the Delta Chis. Chris Jensen, Michigan ’95, presented a session that gave participants the opportunity to learn about their individual leadership styles. This selfevaluation program allowed brothers the chance to match their common styles and determine how they can better lead organizations that they are involved in. again to present a session on academics and the six rules of scholarship. Chip challenged the attendees to “go the extra mile” and strive for success in everything we do. After Chip’s presentation, the attendees got yet another opportunity to choose which session they wanted to attend. J.D. Adams, Appalachian State ’95 presented a session on developing leadership, being successful and taking risks. Jim
Picciani and Jon Russo, Connecticut ’89, do a team presentation titled, “Doin’ Business 101 – What they didn’t teach you in college.” Paul and Jon are very successful businessmen in the Silicon Valley and offered many first hand experiences and provided helpful tips for success during and after college. Following Paul and Jon’s presentation, the attendees moved to smaller breakout sessions. Mike McRee presented a session on resume building, developing strategies to better market yourself and tips on gaining the extra edge in the competitive internship and job market. Chris Jensen presented a session on diversity and the issues surrounding today’s college student. A number of activities were included in Chris’s presentation. A special presentation was also made on Saturday evening. Mike Vinson, Northwest Missouri ’98, presented a gift, on behalf of the attendees, of over 100 children’s books to Larry Eckholt, Director of Development for the Iowa City Public Library. All books were donated by the Jackson College attendees. Ac-

graduation ceremony. The final event of the 1999 Senator Henry M. Jackson Leadership College was a session facilitated by Brother McKaig titled “Taking I t A l l Home.” Most agreed that learning new skills, be it personal or professional, is worthless unless those ideas can be implemented. Dick did a wonderful job of bringing the entire weekend full-circle. Most attendees felt that the 1999 Jackson College was a once in a lifetime experience. The attendees were taken, over two full days, from a discussion of understanding why they are Delta Chis to understanding themselves to understanding group dynamics and human nature. Many brothers were excited to get back to their chap-

The Jackson Leadership College is sponsored by the Delta Chi Educational Foundation and is held every year. On Convention years, the Jackson College is held at the Convention site. The Foundation subsidizes the cost of non-convention year Colleges, which makes it more affordable. The cost per person for the 1999 Jackson College was only $55.00! Because of the generosity of donors to the Delta Chi Educational Foundation, the men received a great deal of knowledge at little cost. If one of your chapter brothers attended the College, ask him about it!

ANNUAL REPORT (continued) PROGRAMMING Exciting developments have been made this year in educational programming for the Fraternity. Currently, The KEY is entering the final months of its pilot stage. After input from the “pilot” chapters we have gone back to the drawing board to revamp and revitalize the program. A new look and new materials will be added to the program for its pending release. The entire program will be unveiled this upcoming summer at Delta Chi’s Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. At this time any member who would like to participate in the program will be able to do so. Never before seen educational materials are being added to the program and will serve as another resource to the member’s of Delta Chi to enhance their fraternity experience. Some of these materials include: – A CD-ROM which contains 8 educational power point presentations on topics ranging from time management to financial planning that can be presented to the chapter or your entire Greek system by any undergraduate or alumnus member of Delta Chi, – A Key Coordinator’s Resource Guide that adds a number of different activities and educational insight so that the program can best be managed, – An Alumni Advisor manual that will contain everything that an alumnus didn’t learn as a undergraduate, that he will need to serve in an advisory role to the program, – Inexpensive day planners for members that will cover the school year and will include important dates and other useful items to keep our members on the path toward graduation, – A new participant’s guide for any member of Delta Chi who want to participate, whether his chapter chooses to or not, – An online component as a branch of Delta Chi’s web page that will contain information about the program, up to date ideas, a featured link of the month and increased communication with The Director of Programming, for questions and answers about the program. Another educational opportunity that will become available in the upcoming months are the Regional Leadership Conferences. To maximize the educational value of the weekend an entire curriculum is being developed to have each attendee evaluate and build upon his own leadership abilities. If a Regional Leadership Conference host chapter and its Regent choose to utilize this new resource it will shift the focus of the weekend from “breakout” sessions to a unified learning experience for all members. By shifting the conference to an institute learning format attendees will be exposed 8

to leadership theory, decision making, confrontation and coalition building skills in a way that will only serve to benefit their own development and advance the future of Delta Chi. Both Participant Manuals and Facilitator Guides will be available at the end of November. A newly revised booklet, “The Party Continues,” contains over 100 social events in full compliance with our risk mangement policy. As you can see, a number of items are in the works to keep Delta Chi current with the times and to provide a bright future for the Fraternity.
CHAPTER SERVICES During the 1998-99 school year, we made a total of 258 visits to our 120 groups. Only thirty-five chapters received just one visit which translates into repeat and focused visits to a large majority of our groups. Every group received at least one visit in the fall since we were fortunate enough to have six Leadership Consultants at that time. In the spring, we started with five Consultants and tried a new program of utilizing “team visits” with two two-man teams. It met with mixed reviews and we are looking at modifying the program to see if we can improve its effectiveness. We are also considering other concepts in an attempt to maximize the impact on our chapters. In addition, we expanded at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio; California State University at Fullerton (site of a former chapter); James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA; the University of Oregon (site of a former chapter) in Eugene, OR and Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. In anticipation of additional funding, we have hired Joe Burak, Michigan ’98 to start as the new Director of Expansion and Colony Development effective December 1, 1999. This will give our expansion efforts and our colonies the type of attention they deserve. Since 1992, the men’s fraternities have suffered from a seven percent per annum reduction in initiation numbers and our chapters, on average, have been no different. Some have prospered during that time while others have struggled and still others have closed. At the 1998 Convention, Delta Chi officially closed eight chapters. Three of these were closed due to risk management violations while the remaining five were closed due to a loss of membership. There have been many theories as to why the men’s fraternities have been having such a difficult time in the 1990’s. Whatever the issue(s), the bottom line is that, if we remain true to the basic values of Delta Chi we can still prosper. Where we can honestly say that we are good for young men, we do well.
FINANCES The operating budget for 1998-99 was $1,619,841 which included $371,608 for our liability insurance program and $170,773 for the Convention. Operating income for the General Fund (excluding the Convention and Liability Insurance) was $1,010,720 with operating expenses of $1,064,369. This resulted in an operating loss of $53,649 inspite of a partial ($32,725) impact from the dues increase we were granted at the Convention. Since we had operated the prior year short two staff members and had to cut chapter services due to that shortfall, we had carried forward an operating surplus of $76,230 from 1997-98 and this was used to offset the operating loss and allowed us to not only breakeven but to carry a surplus forward to the 1999-2000 fiscal year of $22,580. This, combined with the full impact of the dues increase ($10 in associate member dues, $10 in initiation dues and $5 in membership dues) should allow us to breakeven with normal operations.
HOUSING FUND As of June 30, 1999, the Housing Fund had 22 outstanding loans totalling $1,463,000. With $1,228,000 in unloaned assets, the Fund’s total assets stood at $2,691,000 not counting the $239,000 reserve for bad debt. The Fund’s balance grew $217,000 during the fiscal year. The Fund provided loans to two chapter housing corporations during the twelve months ending June 30, 1999 and re-amortized another loan. Two additional loans were funded since June 30. The housing committee audits the files of the loan portfolio on an annual basis to ensure that the documentation is all in order. For the current fiscal year, the committee has set the interest rate at the West Coast Edition of the Wall Street Journal Prime +1.5% for most new loans with variations from that rate being determined based on an assessment of the risk invloved in the loan.
STAFFING Delta Chi has been blessed with great stability in its staffing. Marge Lee, Office Manager, is starting her 36th year; Ray Galbreth, Executive Director, is in his 21st year; Debra Bilskemper, Secretary is in her 13th year; Anne Schulte, Assistant Clerk, is in her fifth year; Mike Arrillaga, Director of Chapter Services, is in his third year; Corey Shigematsu, Director of Programming, is in his third year; Claudia Jansenius, Clerk, is in her third year, and Matt Hamill, Director of Chapter Development, is in his first year. We also currently have five Leadership Consultants: Joe Burak, Michigan ’98: Tom Carroll, Hayward ’98; Ryan Cassell , Radford ’99; Jim Dunn, Rutgers ’99; and Brian Martin, Ball State ’99.
1998-1999 Award Winners The Delta Chi Awards Program is designed to recognize and promote those areas that are critical to the success of the chapter. The “E” Key, the Fraternity’s oldest award, and the Outstanding “C” Award recognize the performance of two vital chapter officers. For the other awards, the Fraternity is divided into two divisions: Red and Buff. The Red Division contains those chapters with 19 or more fraternities on their campus or whose Greek system has over 40 percent of the undergraduate student body. The remaining chapters make up the Buff Division.
In recognition of the chapter’s performance on campus and within the community, the Outstanding Campus Leadership, Outstanding Community Service Program, Outstanding Intramural Program, Outstanding Membership Recruitment Program, Outstanding Scholarship Program Awards, and Outstanding Financial Management Awards are presented. Three awards address the alumni programming of a chapter: the Outstanding Alumni Board of Trustees, Outstanding Alumni Newsletter, and Outstanding “BB” Awards.
Chapters that have shown a marked improvement in their overall operations are given the Certificate of Achievement. The “AA” selects the winner of the Most Improved Chapter from the recipients of this award. The winners of the Award of Excellence show strength across the board. In most cases they are winners of several awards. When they are not, they show above average performance in all areas with no area of weakness. From the recipients of the Award of Excellence, the “AA” selects the President’s Cup winners. There is a maximum of three Cups in each Division, but no minimum.

Trustee Society The Foundation is looking for 100 alumni to donate $1,000 per year (over and above their normal level of support) for a minimum of three years. The first 100 brothers participating in the program will be Charter Members of the Trustee Society. It is they who will provide the resources needed to support a professional development program, a quality development staff, and organized support systems. Funds from the Trustee Society will enable the Foundation to develop the infrastructure and support needed to pursue major gifts, and will allow Delta Chi to enter the next century with the resources to further the college experience that means so much to so many. Recognition Charter members of the
Trustee Society will receive a special lapel pin that designates them as members of the Society. They will also be listed in the fall/winter issue of the Quarterly and every issue of the Foundation’s FOCUS newsletter. RISK MANAGEMENT POLICY REVISED 7/97 The Risk Management Policy of FIPG, Inc. includes the provisions which follow and shall apply to all fraternity entities and all levels of fraternity membership. ALCOHOL AND DRUGS 1. The possession, sale, use or consumption of ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, while on chapter premises, during a fraternity event, or in any situation sponsored or endorsed by the chapter, or at any event an observer would associate with the fraternity, must be in compliance with any and all applicable laws of the state, province, county, city and institution of higher education, and must comply with either the BYOB or Third Party Vendor Guidelines. 2. No alcoholic beverages may be purchased through chapter funds nor may the purchase of same for members or guests be undertaken or coordinated by any member in the name of, or on behalf of, the chapter. The purchase or use of a bulk quantity or common sources of such alcoholic beverage, i.e., kegs or cases, is prohibited. 3. OPEN PARTIES, meaning those with unrestricted access by nonmembers of the fraternity, without specific invitation, where alcohol is present, shall be prohibited. 4. No members, collectively or individually, shall purchase for, serve to, or sell alcoholic beverages to any minor (i.e., those under legal “drinking age”). 5. The possession, sale or use of any ILLEGAL DRUGS or CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES while on chapter premises or during a fraternity event or at any event that an observer would associate with the fraternity, is strictly prohibited. 6. No chapter may co-sponsor an event with an alcoholic distributor, charitable organization or tavern (tavern defined as an establishment generating more than half of annual gross sales from alcohol) where alcohol is given away, sold or otherwise provided to those present. 7. No chapter may co-sponsor or co-finance a function where alcohol is purchased by any of the host chapters, groups or organizations. 8. All rush activities associated with any chapter will be a DRY rush function. 9. No member shall permit, tolerate, encourage or participate in “drinking games.” 10. No alcohol shall be present at any pledge/associate member/novice program, activity or ritual of the chapter. HAZING No chapter, colony, student or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities. Hazing activities are defined as: “Any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol; paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities carried on outside or inside of the confines of the chapter house; wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with academic achievement, fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution, or applicable state law.” SEXUAL ABUSE AND HARASSMENT The fraternity will not tolerate or condone any form of sexually abusive behavior on the part of its members, whether physical, mental or emotional. This is to include any actions which are demeaning to women or men including, but not limited to, date rape, gang rape or verbal harassment. 18

FIRE, HEALTH AND SAFETY All chapter houses should meet all local fire and health codes and standards. All chapters should have posted by common phones, emergency numbers for fire, police and ambulance and should have posted evacuation routes on the back of the door of each sleeping room. All chapters should comply with engineering recommendations as reported by the insurance company. The possession and/or use of firearms or explosive devices of any kind within the confines and premises of the chapter house is expressly forbidden.
EDUCATION Each fraternity shall annually instruct its students and alumni on the Risk Management Policy of FIPG, Inc. Additionally, all student and alumni members shall annually receive a copy of said Risk Management Policy. THIRD PARTY VENDOR CRITERIA THE VENDOR MUST: 1. Be properly licensed by the appropriate local and state authority. This may involve both a liquor license and a temporary license to sell on the premises where the function is to be held. 2. Be properly insured with a minimum of $1,000,000 of general liability insurance, evidenced by a properly completed certificate of insurance prepared by the insurance provided. The certificate of insurance must also show evidence that the vendor has, as a part of his/her insurance coverage, “off premises liquor liability coverage and non-owned and hired auto coverage.” Named insureds included on the certificate of insurance must as a minimum include the local chapter hiring the vendor as well as the international fraternity that the local chapter is affiliated with. 3. Agree in writing to cash sales only, collected by the vendor during the function. 4. Assume in writing all the responsibilities that any other purveyor of alcoholic beverages would assume in the normal course of business, including but not limited to: a. Checking identification cards upon entry; b. Not serving minors; c. Not serving individuals that appear to be intoxicated; d. Maintaining absolute control of ALL alcoholic containers present; e. Collecting all remaining alcohol at the end of a function (no excess alcohol — opened or unopened — is to be given, sold or furnished to the chapter). Vendor MUST remove all alco hol from the premises. POLICY GUIDELINES As adopted by FIPG, Inc. December, 1992 1. Closed parties (meaning those events with alcohol present) should have a guest list prepared at least 24 hours in advance. Attendance should be limited to two guests per member. 2. “Non-alcoholic” keg beer is not permitted because it can contain up .05 percent alcohol. Therefore, serving it would be a violation of our policy.

Chapter Situations Each year thousands of young men join fraternities, looking for the mystical “bond of brotherhood” and a sense of belonging that has so much to do with why Delta Chi was founded by eleven men on October 13, 1890 on the campus of Cornell University. Since then, Delta Chi has flourished. Some time this year, one of Delta Chi’s one hundred and twenty chapters and colonies will initiate the 81,000th member of the Fraternity. However, it has not always been easy for Delta Chi and other fraternities. Marsh W. White, former “AA” Emeritus and OWC, may have said it best in 1953 when he said, “The ability of the fraternity movement to survive and grow in spite of many negative circumstances, might be explained by the fact that it has two quite different sets of purposes and characteristics.” Marsh went on to explain that these different sets of purposes and characteristics could be described as spiritual and utilitarian. According to Marsh, the spiritual objectives “have remained rather constant since the inception of the fraternity idea” and would include concepts such as those described in the Preamble to Delta Chi’s Constitution. The utilitarian purposes and characteristics of the fraternity community, according to Marsh, “have changed in accordance with social trends and the demands of the times.” Marsh added, “Since each fraternity chapter must go before its supporting public to recruit new members at all too frequent intervals, its utilitarian purposes are kept continuously responsive to what the mercantile field called customer demands.” Unfortunately problems occur when the actions associated with the utilitarian purposes fail to remain consistent with those spiritual purposes. Sometimes it is the chapter in general which loses sight of those core values while other times it is simply a small group or even one individual. Still, even in those cases, the chapter as a whole must understand that it has the responsibility to ensure that the laws of the land and the basic expectations of a Delta Chi are upheld. Too often our members have a difficult time confronting the inappropriate behavior of their peers. When such behavior puts the well-being of individuals or the chapter as a whole at risk, we are all duty bound by our oath as members of Delta Chi to address it no matter how uncomfortable that may be. Yes, we are our Brothers’ Keepers. Besides the guidelines set forth on the facing page (which are repeated in every fall/winter of the Quarterly; are reviewed during chapter visits, at the Convention and at every Regional Conference; appear in the Cornerstone, and are sent to countless officers every year; the Fraternity provides “The Party Continues” (a booklet with over 100 social event ideas), “Building Better Brotherhood” (a booklet with 58 Brotherhood Events), a Pre-Initiation BRIEF (with 38 different activities from which to choose) and a Membership Education BRIEF (which outlines a model Associate Member Program). And yet, we still hear, “You only tell us what we can’t do and never tell us what we can do.”
“bad” and chapters not on the list are “good,” that can easily be an unfair conclusion. Some of the chapters listed here were making a sincere effort at risk management and suffered from an oversight or the wanton action of one individual. Certain chapters not on this list have been purposefully not complying with or at least enforcing Delta Chi Law and the laws of the land and have yet to suffer the consequences of the risks they are running. Whatever the case, the solution remains the same. Each and every chapter needs the involvement of mature alumni who can help them in all areas of chapter operations. Despite the fact that Delta Chi has put forth great effort in this and other areas, we need to do more. And, finally, each and every member of Delta Chi needs to periodically reflect on Marsh’s “spiritual objectives,” as contained in our Preamble: Promote Friendship, Develop Character, Advance Justice, and Assist in the Acquisition of a Sound Education. Corrective Action Levels Level 1—Shall include, but is not limited to, ordering that the Chapter cease and desist from the conduct in the future and be in accordance with the requirements of Delta Chi Law and the Risk Management Policy of the Fraternity. The Chapter shall be required to submit to the Executive Director a written statement that all prohibited conduct has been stopped. The statement shall be signed by the “A”, “BB” and such other members of the Chapter, as specified in the report, that were involved with or had supervision over the conduct in the violation. Level 2—Shall include, but is not limited to, all provisions of Level 1, plus the Chapter shall submit a written plan of procedures and/or activities that comply with the Fraternity’s Risk Management Policy covering the activities in the violation. The plan shall be updated at least twice per year for the period of corrective action. Level 3—Shall include, but is not limited to, all provisions of Level 1 and 2, plus supervision of the activities of the Chapter that were involved in the violation by a person or persons acceptable to the Executive Director.
Risk Management Violations So, despite Delta Chi’s continuing efforts to educate its membership on sound Risk Management practices that would help ensure the safety of our members and guests, we continue to have chapters and individual members take risks that put people and Delta Chi in jeopardy. It boils down to personal responsibility and a commitment to the fundamental values we are all sworn to uphold. What follows is a list of chapters that are on Corrective Action for violation of the Risk Management Policy as of October 15, 1999. While it is tempting to assume that chapters on this list are
Level 4—Shall include, but is not limited to, all provisions of Levels 1, 2 and 3 plus the charter of the Chapter shall be suspended for the period of time of the corrective action. Chapters under Level 4 Corrective Action shall either be placed in conservatorship, as provided in Delta Chi Law, or shall operate under the direct supervision of the Executive Director. Level 5—Shall require the suspension of the charter and the cessation of operation of the Chapter as it then exists. Delta Chi Members on “The Wall”
In some respects, the war in Vietnam was like a Dilbert episode — there were too many meetings, most of them futile. That’s why, at one of the meetings, I was delighted to find that one of the attendees was a Delta Chi. His name was Bob Miller, and he was a great guy, with a super personality, and well respected. A month or so later, I was told he’d been killed. That was one of the lowest points of my tour. that I’d forgotten his name. I have a terrible memory for names, and it’s not unusual to forget one, but this one really bothered me. A few months ago, using the Delta Chi web site, I contacted Ray Galbreth at the Headquarters and asked if we had a list of brothers lost in Vietnam. I thought that would help me remember. He informed me that we didn’t have such a list, and over a series of e-mails we both agreed that it was something we should have. Ray worked up a list of brothers who had died in that general time frame (close to 1,000 names) and sent it to me. I checked the Vietnam vet sites on the web and found one (Wall on the Web) that had the entire database of casualties as both searchable and downloadable. They zipped it and I downloaded it (over 64,000 names). First, I deleted, from each database, any last name not appearing in the other data-

base. This was purely an eyeball task, as any program written could fail on similar names (e.g. McVay, MacVay, McVeay). Then the final matching was done on first name and birth date. It boiled down to 12 names. I’m quite sure that these matches are valid. It’s possible that the list may not be complete. The reasons could vary from spelling variations to deaths not reported to the fraternity. I hope this list will encourage others to report any other Vietnam casualties to the Headquarters. It would be good also to include any known casualties from WWI, WWII, Korea and the Gulf War while there are still people around (alumni groups, housemothers, etc.) who would remember them. The next time I go to D.C., I plan to take the list and visit the wall again. I hope other Delta Chis now have an extra reason to do so as well. By George L. Hopkins IA ST ’61

F. Phil Yang, Abra ’80 Is Delta Chi’s Fifth New Founder! As Delta Chi Fraternity joins in the millenium celebration, a fifth New Founder has emerged. Brother F. Phil Yang, Abracadabra ’80 has chosen this special occasion and the Fraternity’s 110 th anniversary in the year 2000 to lift his lifetime giving to $110,000, thus joining Brothers Frederick B. Hammert, Oklahoma ’60; Gene A. Johnson, Oklahoma State ’58; Clayton T. Roberts, Florida ’31; and Bernhard C. Shaffer, Penn State ’25 as a major benefactor of Delta Chi. Brother Yang was among 39 undergraduates at the University of California, Berkeley who were Founding Fathers when the Abracadabra Chapter re-chartered in May, 1978. The Abracadabra name came from a local fraternity that merged with Delta Chi in the late 1960’s. Long time president of the University of California, Robert Gordon Sproul, for whom the main plaza on campus and the administration building was named, was a member of the local group. The re-chartered Delta Chi group wanted an alternative to the Animal House mentality that was prevalent in the Berkeley Greek system in the late 1970’s, a sharp contrast to the radical 1960’s which submerged the system. Dan Billings ’76, a transferred graduate student from the Long Beach Chapter, presented the concept of a non-hazing fraternity. Brother Yang was sold on this and, with 23 others, was initiated by the brothers from the Oregon State Chapter in May, 1977. During the formative years of the new chapter, executive directors Larry Audlehelm, Iowa ’71 and Ray Galbreth, Missouri ’69, field secretary Ken Shepard, Long Beach ’77, and of course, office manager Marge Lee (aka Delta Chi Mom) provided strong support and guidance. Major achievements were recorded in scholarship, athletics and student government. The core of this group has mostly remained in the San Francisco and Sili-
con Valley area. It would not surprise Brother Yang one bit if one of his contemporaries also becomes a significant benefactor of the Fraternity. Recalling his impressions as an incoming freshman, Brother Yang was naturally intimidated by the sheer size of the 30,000+ student body and the surrounding urban setting, though he had grown accustomed to high-den-

He felt extremely lucky to have been assigned to Putnam Hall, where the majority of first and second floor dorm mates became Delta Chi brothers, and mates for life. “Growing up in an Asian culture, the importance of education was ‘not negotiable,’” Brother Yang laughs. The education that Berkeley provided and that Delta Chi supplemented was a unique blend that prepared Brother Yang for a career in international marketing. After an undergraduate degree in architecture and a master’s in business administration, Brother Yang worked for many multi-nationals in the U. S. and in Asia. He is currently
the Regional Marketing Director, Asia Pacific and Middle East, for DHL Worldwide Express and resides in Singapore. Brother Yang’s commitment to education is also evident at two leading universities. U. C. Berkeley has a Delta Chi Fraternity program with cumulative gifts of over $100,000 while the joint Sino-US program between China’s Nanjing University and Johns Hopkins University has benefited from a $50,000 gift. Brother Yang is quick to point out his role models, Gene Johnson and Fred Hammert, who have instilled in him a “sense of duty.” There are many others in the Fraternity that Brother Yang has come to know who have also given selflessly of time and financial resources over the years. Asked about his hopes for Delta Chi in the new millenium, Brother Yang would like to have a chapter return to the Berkeley campus, and strangely enough, to the Stanford campus. Having worked for the likes of Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, RJR Nabisco and Guinness Stout, he knows that competition breeds excellence. His other hope is to have his giving prompt other brothers to reflect on the positive role of Delta Chi in their personal and professional development. ALABAMA ALUMNI GATHER Alumni support for the Alabama Chapter continues to grow. This was never more evident than at the Second Annual Alabama Delta Chi Alumni Honors Dinner attended by more than 40 alumni at The Club in Birmingham on August 14, 1999. In addition, four young men being rushed by the chapter attended. (Later, during fall rush, they all pledged to form the nucleus of an outstanding class for our re-emerging chapter.) John Ed Willoughby ’57, did an outstanding job as master of ceremonies – small wonder, since he has done this professionally for many years. The group was informed of the current environment fraternities face on our campus by Rick Funk, Associate Director of Student Life, University of Alabama. He ended his talk by welcoming our chapter back as a member of the University community, which was very well received by everyone present. The high point of the evening was the presentation of the Alabama Chapter Jefferson J. Coleman Outstanding Alumni Awards to Dr. Noah Langdale Jr., L.L.D., ’41, President Emeritus, Georgia State University in Atlanta, and Richard 22

S. (Rick) Manley ’53, who served 21 years in the Alabama State Legislature and now practices law in Demopolis. Their pictures will join those of Brother Coleman and last year’s first recipient of the award, Walt Granger ’50, on the chapter house’s “Wall of Honor.” Those who receive this award have honored and supported the Alabama Chapter by their professional and personal achievements and/or by direct meritorious service. Winners in the Second Annual Bill Mace Memorial Golf Outing, held earlier that day , were announced, with Dr. Jack Whetstone ’50, and Joel Boyd ’85, having taken the honors. The evening ended in grand fashion as John Freeman ’83, ABT Treasurer, gave a full report on the renovation and refurnishing of the chapter house first floor completed this summer. He concluded by outlining plans for doing the same next summer to the second floor. Then John Ed thanked everyone for attending and reminded them of next year’s honors dinner. A rousing rendition of The Delta Chi Bond Song by the entire group closed the affair.
