Substance Abuse

For many people, having a drink or two at a party or after a hard day at work is a normal part of life. But for others, the need to drink, or use drugs, can consume their lives. Addiction is a very real disease that can damage a person’s health and relationships. Just like diabetes or any other chronic health condition, substance abuse will worsen if it’s not treated. Drug abuse and dependence directly impacts about 25 million people in the United States, and may also affect family members, coworkers, and friends. Symptoms of Substance Abuse There can be a lot of denial when it comes to substance abuse. People who abuse drugs or alcohol often don’t think that their use is a problem. They say that they just like to have a good time, or that they can stop if they really want to. However, it’s rarely ever that easy. Here are some symptoms and warning signs to look for: Developing a pattern of use (daily, “weekend warrior,” binges) Needing more alcohol or drugs to get the same affect Continuing to use a substance in situations that are physically hazardous Experiencing recurring problems in any area of life because of the use of drugs or alcohol Failing to fulfill major obligations because of substance use To learn more about certain types of drugs and substances, and how they may affect someone who is abusing, visit the .
