These 66mm/78a/FRF 727/cs high rebound core I have to say that the FRFs are some of the most plush, nicest wheels I have ever skated. Besides a somewhat agonizing mold release, the wheels performed exceptionally. Resilient urethane that doesn’t wear down fast, but not invincible. The core is really nice but getting bearings in and out can be a little tedious. The wheels are a bit grippy themselves slide-wise but have a defined slip point and once it is found they float out beautifully. They have a very engaged, controllable slide, shed speed well, but they accelerate nicely too out of a slide. A downside to them is that they are like 60 bucks for a set so that kinda blows. 8/10.

Santa Cruz Slime Balls 66mm/78a/os core They do not come stone ground but the slide once they’re broken in is pretty enjoyable. They have been a little on the grippy side for me and I would recommend them for mostly cruiser applications. The hook-up and release is similar to that of these 727s but the mid-slide characteristics are different. The wheels have a “death swirl” but it doesn’t stop the wheels from being fun. They wear relatively fast, leave thane, and were a little on the louder side. Overall they are a very decent wheel. Cost around 30 bucks most places. 7/10

Duval Hurricanes 65mm 81a I was really excited to get my hands on these wheels since they are becoming harder to find, but after riding them I feel a bit disappointed. The wheels themselves are close to sideset, have a pretty small contact patch, round outer lip, and almost, if not square inner lip. The inner lip when sliding has the tendency to get caught on the road more than I would like it to. Besides the inner lip the wheels slide fairly well, a little salty, and wear okay. My biggest issue with the wheels was the core, smaller than 10mm and larger than 8mm, meaning that I had to try to make speed rings and an 8mm spacer work (poorly). The end result was a spacer that was a hair too large. This may be the reason that the wheels would howl at the end of a slide. A low quality core made it so the wheels were not as fun as I hoped they would be. I will say however that they have a fun polyurethane formula that I would like to see used in different shaped wheels. Because of the core I will give them a 6/10.

s9 topshelves opaque white 65mm 78a A wheel that is well loved in the community for obvious reasons, if you have ridden them you all ready know. A few months ago in the az scene these were the talk of the town, “slide nicer than a butterball, and cheaper”. While the enjoyment of the slide is based upon rider preference, the wheels proved to be fun like my friends told me they were but definitely have their flaws. The slide is kind of a grainy, sugary slide, and the wheels definitely leave urethane and wear down fast. But the downside to their slide is that they don’t hook back up as easily as other wheels. The core is probably the biggest downside to the wheel because it deforms a ton and eventually bearings can just fall out of it. Since I have ridden them, s9 has released a 70mm version of the top shelfs in both a round and square lip. I would give them a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.

Sector 9 Biothane 65mm 78a blue. Come stone ground and perform how other mids do. Really nice consistent slide that for me took just a bit more force to kick out than the vaults that I was also riding. Feel of the wheel varied for different pavement, but today they were very fun in 70 degree Arizona heat. They leave thane so they are not the longest lasting wheel. They have a centerset core that is better than the topshelf core since my bearings aren’t falling out when I take the wheel off. I would recommend these wheels to anyone who digs topshelfs but doesnt like the core or anyone looking for a cheap fun wheel. They can be found on socialskateboarding for about 28$ before discounts. Also they are made from a soy compound and that is really cool. I would give them an 8.5/10

5 years ago 1 notes #Sector 9 #Biothanes #wheel review #longboard Guest reviews from Frankie of Maxxspeed Skateboards Wheels in this range are some of my favorite wheels in skateboarding. Small and soft = super fun on everything! Here’s what i’ve used: 61mm 80a Venom Street Snakes—Awesome on hills. Theyre super wide for their height, so the slide is controlled, buttery, and most importantly the wheels wear pretty well. The wheels are also centerset, but the lips are slightly different (no big deal). They are lacking IMO in the transition side of things (pool/park/street). The aforementioned width of the wheels tend to catch curbs abruptly, they weigh a lot vs. typical street wheels, and the inner lip bites easily on messed up tricks. 8/10 for hills, 6/10 for tranny skating. 62mm 82a Satori Eco Easy Riders—Some of my favorite all time smaller wheels. Supremely underrated/under used. They are CS, 82a, and cheap ($30 is about right). The slide is something like Metro thane + Abec classic thane. It’s butterier than metro, and more resilient than classic. Real real nice on the hills. The shape also deforms very little when “shortboarding”, so speed is maintained rather well. The only thing they suck at is dedicated park, but even then they are workable. 8/10 all around 62mm ATF Bones Filmers—Some of the best small soft wheels out there IMO. Great cores, great thane, great company. I rock the 62mm Ty Evans model, and can’t get enough of them. Theyre slightly offset, 40mm wide (kinda narrow looking), and DOPE. They slide extremely well…somewhere between sugary and buttery, erring towards the sugary side a little more than the butteriness. They wear ridiculously slow for me too (so far, havent killed a set yet). Most importantly for me, they slide well in tranny skating applications well too. Boardslides, grinds, and all sorts of wheel sliding tricks are totally possible. Often times soft wheels will catch an edge and throw me off, but the bones keep on slidin’ through. In ditches these wheels are second to none. They even maintain good speed in my local park! 9.5/10 overall 62mm 81a Pink Polka Dots—It’s hard not to love classic thane when going sideways, but the wheels die to quick for me to seriously consider using them often. The new slightly harder duro has me interested though. The pinks were “meh” in street skating applications, but really shined on freeride hills (good acceleration, perfect slide feel). 7/10 overall 66mm S9 Butterballs—Butterballs feel like an improved Abec11 Freeride. The slide feels like classic thane mixed with s9 race formula, which is as awesome as it sounds. Surprisingly resilient (beats classic thane), but nothing to brag about. Not ideal for shortboard applications, but it’s possible. The big core kinda helps keep speed in parks. 9/10 on hills, 4/10 in a pool/ramp/etc. 65mm 83a Fat Frees—Overall surprisingly good. The slide was wonderful, the lips rarely caught on things when tranny skating, and they really kept their speed well. Fat frees were excellent ditch wheels for me, and straight slayed the hills. Price is a big downside though. And i had a core melt on me. 7.5/10 Gravity thane in general—The slide is buttery to a fault. Speed is shed too quick, the wheels like flatspotting and ovalizing, and the thane isn’t the fastest. Ive also had multiple cores fail me (one catastrophically at speed). 4/10 61mm 81a Retro Bertz—I looooooove amber thane. It just dies too quick to make me want to buy them on the regular. 6/10 Retro Vertz—Sideset, 96a classic thane wheels. Yeah, they slide! The slide is icy but not un-enjoyable by any means. Fun for “tech sliding” and getting maximum stupid on hills. Great in ditches and parks. Die pretty quickly, being classic thane and all. 6/10

Bennett alligators 62mm 79a square lip, os wheel These are grippy when fresh but once theyre broken in they are a great and sugary wheel. Feel a lot like the vaults but dont cone as fast but they do leave a good amount of urethane when slid. a little less controllable than the vaults but for sure enjoyable in ~50* weather. I would recommend these to anyone who likes sugary wheels or just a nice small wheel that can be used in a variety of diciplines. They would work great on a double kick or a cruising board but I have mine set up on an omen spawn with road rider trucks. If you’re looking for a larger version they are also offered in 71mm and the durometers of both sizes are 78a, 79a, 80a, and 81a. worth checking out and can be found for decent prices on socialskateboards (about 35$ - 40$ depending on size). In other news if you want to try out the vault wheels but in a larger size, they just released the fibreflex wheels in 70mm called fattyflex

so here is my first installation in my wheel comparison. Vault Fibreflex 62mm 83a and a 46mm cp they were set up on a 27” wb on charger IIs topmounted and I weigh between 160-165lbs. i have been stoked on these ever since i broke them in. the break in period was a bit tedious but definitely worth it. The wheels come new with round outer lips and a square inner lip and look to be close to cs. they retail on amazon for $28 bucks and the company is based out of australia, but fear not, 4 dollar shipping is the bees knees and they arrive quickly. The wheels wear very fast, and if you don’t distribute your slides evenly, the wheels can cone on opposite sides. The lips do get small chunks taken out but since the wheels wear so fast, the chunked spots aren’t really noticeable. If this happens just rotate to the opposite side and keep sliding and they will even out. The wheels leave a bunch of urethane on the road and blast your hangers with ‘thane dust. The slide is very enjoyable, but i would not consider it buttery. I don’t really know what to classify the slide as really, besides predictable. Easily controlled and does not ice out, and the sound during the slide is like a whisper. The transition kick out -> slide ->hookup is nice and easy without unexpected grip, and there is little resistance from the wheel during the slide. The wheels are suited for freeride and campus cruising and work as well on minis as they do on longer boards. they come in clear and solid colors, the solids are said to last longer but lack the same slide. A con of them is that they are a bit slower, possibly due to their size. I would definitely recommend and buy again and probably try out the solids to see how they are.
