Girl Scouts learn self-confidence through practice of their “elevator pitch,” a tried-and-true standard of successful sales people. Supplies:   

Copies of the elevator pitch template. List of possible customer responses. Pencils, markers or crayons.

Set-up: 

Cut apart the possible customer responses, fold them, and place them in a small container.

Instructions: Ask girls to imagine they are in an elevator with a potential customer. How will they quickly convince a customer to buy cookies before the door opens and the customer is gone? Explain that a short, practiced sales speech is often called an “elevator pitch,” and is used by many successful sales people. Go over these important steps:  Greet the customer.  Share your goals.  Ask for the sale (ask them to buy cookies).  Tell the customer a little about the cookies.  Ask the customer if they know about Operation Thin Mint® and if they would like to support the program.  Close the sale (sell them the cookies). Challenge the girls to write their own elevator pitches on their templates. Remind them to include the important points but to also add some personal touches, such as mentioning their favorite cookies. Have the girls practice their sales pitches with one another. Next have each girl come up and present her pitch to the group. As she finishes pull one of the possible customer response papers and read it aloud, she should do her best to respond. If she gets stuck, have the group help by making suggestions.
