Awarded to students majoring in pre-seminary or nursing. Martha A. Alcock Education Scholarship (2006) Established by Barry Alcock in memory of his wife, Capital University Professor Martha A. Alcock. Awarded to freshman students majoring in education, with preference given to a graduate of: Montpelier High School; Franklin Heights High School; or any high school in the South-Western City School District. Helen Pugh Alcorn Scholarship (1968) Established with a gift from the estate of Helen Pugh Alcorn. Awarded to students majoring in music.

Edward V. Aler Scholarship (1957) Established with a gift from the estate of Edward V. Aler. Awarded to pre-seminary students, with preference given to students from Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Harry and Kathryn S. Allensworth Scholarship (1967) Established with a gift from the estate of Kathryn S. Allensworth in memory of Kathryn and her husband Harry. Awarded to students majoring in music.

ESL) Altman Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship (2007) Established by the Altman Family Foundation, represented by brothers James P. Altman Sr. (’54) and Jon J. Altman. The scholarship recognizes Altman family members who have pursued coursework at Capital University and demonstrates appreciation for work being done at the university. Awarded to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. Alumni Advisory Board Scholarship (2012) Established with gifts by current and former members of the Capital University Alumni Advisory Board to encourage future alumni to actively participate in the life of the University beyond their years as students. Awarded to a member of the Capital University Student Alumni Club (CUSAC). In the event there is no eligible CUSAC candidate, students in good academic standing who demonstrate leadership characteristics and are active in community and service learning projects are eligible for consideration. If there is no eligible candidate in a given year, the funds shall carry over to the next year.

Joanne Amstutz Memorial Scholarship (1979) Established by Clarence V. and Evelyn Amstutz of Dalton, Ohio in memory of their only child, Joanne (1938-1979) who attending Capital from 1956 to 1960. Students having a physical disability given first preference.

Joyce Folk Ashbaugh Scholarship (2004) Established by Frederick A. Ashbaugh in memory of his beloved wife, Joyce Folk Ashbaugh (’52). Awarded to students majoring in education. Fred and Pearl Asp Memorial Scholarship (1989) Established by Rev. Dennis Asp (’64) and other family members in memory of their parents, Fred and Pearl Asp and in honor of Pearl’s nursing career. Awarded to students majoring in nursing. Athletic Graduate Assistant Scholarship Program (2013) Established with a gift from the estate of Richard J. Ott (’47). Provides scholarships for the graduate education of those interested in supporting the efforts of athletic programs at Capital University. The scholarship seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them in Capital University's graduate programs. Awarded to graduate students, working not more than 19 hours per week supporting Capital's athletic program, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Recipients selected by Athletic Department personnel though a specified application process for this fund. John and Margaret Atzinger Scholarship Established with a gift from the estate of Margaret Schroth Atzinger. Robert H. Avers Scholarship (2007) Established by Robert (’57) and Joyce Foose (’59) Avers in recognition of Bob’s forty-three year career at Capital University. Awarded to returning students enrolled in the School of Management or majoring in elementary education, with demonstrated financial need and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. return to top

B John W. and Elsie S. Bachman Communication Scholarship Fund (2002) Established with a gift from the estates of John W. (’37, S’40, H’57) and Elsie S. Bachman. John served on the faculties at Capital University, Baylor University, and Union Theological Seminary; and was the 11th President of Wartburg College (1964 to 1974). Awarded to students majoring in communication. Antoinette Lowry Barr Scholarship (1987) Established with a gift from the estate of Antoinette Lowry Barr, an associate professor of English at Capital University from 1966 to 1976. Awarded to students majoring in the humanities. Martin H. and Verna Conklin Bartels Scholarship (2005) Established by Robert Bartels in memory of his parents, Martin H. (’30) and Verna Conklin Bartels, and in honor of their outstanding careers, lifelong dedication and significant contributions to the field of education and the teaching profession. Awarded to students majoring in education. Loren and Dolores Beck Scholarship (2003) Established by former Capital University Board of Trustees member, Loren (’54) and his wife, Dolores Evans (’55) Beck in order to help students develop teamwork and leadership skills that contribute to personal maturation by instilling motivation and self-discipline. Awarded to students who show leadership potential in community service, student activities or athletics. Nathan Siegel and Marian Dumond Beck Scholarship (1985) Established with a gift from the estates of Nathan and Marian Beck to reflect their deep and abiding belief in the work of Capital University. Scholarship awarded without restriction to deserving students. Ernest F. Bergener Scholarship (1926) Established by Dr. August G. Bergener, an 1888 Capital graduate. The scholarship is in memory of Bergener’s son, a student at Capital at the time of his death. Awarded to students majoring in pre-seminary. Bernlohr Family Endowed Scholarship (2007) Established by Dr. Robert (’55) and Carol (’55) Bernlohr, and the Rev. Fred (’44, S’51) and Mary (’44) Bernlohr. The scholarship honors family members and former Capital University employees: Dr. Fred Bernlohr (’18), language professor and coach; William “Mr. Bill” Bernlohr (’27), professor, coach and athletic director; and Ruth Bernlohr, the first director of women’s athletics. In reflecting their own positive educational experiences, the donors are interested in helping future Capital students benefit by developing teamwork and leadership skills that contribute to personal maturation, motivation, and self-discipline. Awarded to students who show leadership potential in community service, student activities and athletics. William F. and Ruth Bernlohr Scholarship (1988) Established with a gift from John R. and Hilda Daniels (’41) Agar, in honor of William F. (’27) and Ruth Bernlohr who provided a home for Hilda during her first two years at Capital University. Alvin E. Bey Scholarship in Chemistry (1998) Established by Alvin E. Bey (’58). Awarded to students majoring in chemistry. Mary Alice Riggs Billow Scholarship (2001) Established by Mary Alice Riggs Billow (’51) and Marvin L. Billow (’51) in memory of their son, Douglas Kent Billow. Awarded to sophomore, junior or senior students majoring in early or middle childhood education. Mr. & Mrs. George C. Bischoff Memorial Scholarship (1969) Established by the estate of Wilbur George Bischoff in memory of his parents. Scholarship awarded without restriction to worthy students. Josiah H. II and Joyce A. Blackmore Scholarship (2009) Established in honor of former Capital University President Josiah H. Blackmore II and his wife, Joyce Blackmore, and of the ideals of education and responsible citizenship and leadership President and Mrs. Blackmore actively sought to encourage in Capital students. Recipients of this scholarship are being recognized for their outstanding achievement in humanities-related disciplines and for their potential as leaders who can initiate and direct positive change in their lives and the lives of others. Doris R. and Marie E. Boldt Scholarship (1996) Established by sisters, Doris (’48) and Marie Boldt in gratitude for the work in Christian higher education being done at Capital University. Scholarship awarded without restriction. Harry Bowser Scholarship Established with a gift from the estate of Harry Bowser to educate worthy young men for the ministry in the American Lutheran faith, who are financially unable to educate themselves for such ministry. Douglas Mark Boyer Memorial Scholarship (1976) Established by Mark L. (‘60) and Virginia A. Boyer in memory of their son. First priority given to students from St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Medina, Ohio. Second priority given to students from Medina County, Ohio. In the case of male applicants, further preference given to those individuals who have participated in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Daryl K. Brandt Memorial Scholarship (1985) Fund established by Rev. and Mrs. Edward F. Brandt (S’59) in memory of their son Daryl (’82) who died in 1984. Awarded to sophomore, junior, or senior students preparing for a service vocation, such as social work, ministry or education with priority given to the order of these choices. Additional preference is given to children of Lutheran pastors. Thomas H. Brinker Scholarship (1994) Established by Tom Brinker (’69). Awarded to students majoring in accounting. Virginia Stevens Britton Scholarship (1963) Established with a gift from the estate of Adelina E. Stevens. Awarded to students majoring in music. Dr. Harold W. Brockman Scholarship (1993) Established by students, alumni, friends and family in honor of Professor Harold Brockman (’48). Awarded to students majoring in mathematics or mathematics education with a grade point average of 3.25 overall, and 3.25 in all mathematics courses taken. Joseph A. Brunetto III Memorial Endowment Fund (2009) Established as a memorial to Joseph A. Brunetto III (L’80) by his wife, Michelle and longtime friend, Edward J. Straub. Funded by friends and family of Joseph. Brunetto spent nearly 30 years with the law firm, Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. He was an accomplished musician, pianist and organist, was very involved in community affairs, and was always intent on making a difference in this life through his relationship with others. Awarded annually to students in the Conservatory of Music and the Capital University Law School. Arnold F. Bunge Jr. Scholarship (1995) Established as a memorial to Arnold F. Bunge Jr. (’48) by his wife Geraldine, family and friends. Awarded to students from counties in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan with an average grade point average of at least 2.3 in high school and college. James L. Burke Endowed Scholarship in History (1999) Established by Betsy A. Burke in honor of her husband’s retirement from Capital University as a professor of history. Awarded to junior or senior students from the state of Ohio majoring in history. Daniel A. Busch Endowment for Scientific Equipment (2008) Established with a gift from the estate of Daniel E. Busch (’34) for the purchase and maintenance of scientific equipment for the Chemistry Department. return to top

C Leslie B. and Nina Callahan Scholarship (2004) Established with a gift from the estate of Nina Mai Callahan. Awarded to students in the Conservatory of Music. Kathryn Klindworth Callaway Scholarship (1989) Established by Waldo W. Callaway in memory of his wife Kathryn (’45) and her love of music. Awarded to students who have an affiliation with the Conservatory through choral or instrumental music. Carl and Irma Broadsword Campbell Endowed Scholarship (1998) Established with a gift from the estates of Carl (’28) and Irma Broadsword (’28) Campbell. Scholarship awarded without restriction. Capital High Impact Project Grant (CHIP; 2015) Established by Capital University in order to provide assured support and practical experience to exemplary high school seniors, and to broaden and complement their undergraduate classroom education at Capital. The first CHIP grant was funded by former Capital University Board of Trustees member, Loren (’54) and his wife, Dolores Evans (’55) Beck. Eligible CHIP projects expenses include, internships, service learning projects, undergraduate research, and travel to engage in scholarly activity. Recipients are selected by committee though a specified submission process for this fund. The Chesapeake Scholarship (2003, Rev. 2010) Established by the Chesapeake Area Program Committee. Awarded with preference given to high school seniors within the Chesapeake area who have been accepted as students at Capital University. Further preference will be given to students from the Chesapeake area currently enrolled at Capital University. Class of 1954 Endowed Scholarship Fund (2004) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1954 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1956 Endowed Scholarship Fund (2005) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1956 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1957 Endowed Scholarship Fund (2006) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1957 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1958 Endowed Scholarship Fund (2007) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1958 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship (2009) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1959 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1960 Endowed Scholarship (2009) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1960 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1962 Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Endowment (2010) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1962 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university, and in honor of Capital University students, faculty, and their own undergraduate experience at the University. The endowment will enhance services and opportunities offered through the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) by providing funding for faculty development and academic support services that benefit the university community as a whole. Class of 1963 Endowed Scholarship (2012) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1963 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the university. Class of 1964 Dell Memorial Scholarship (2013) Established with gifts from the members of the Class of 1964 as part of their 50th reunion gift to the University, and in honor of George Dell a much-beloved professor of English at Capital University. The scholarship is a legacy to his extraordinary respect for young men and women, the ability to make his teaching relevant to the lives of his students, and his remarkable warmth and caring. In his commencement address to the Class of 1964, Professor Dell stated his admiration for Capital students in no uncertain terms: "The greatest excellence of this school is in the quality of the young people who come to us." Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing. Coleman-Bond Scholarship (1990) Established by Charles L. (’51) and Suzanne Coleman (’53) Bond in honor of their parents, Georgia Stimmel Coleman, John Dana Coleman, Charles Gladstone Bond and Louise Artz Bond. Awarded to students majoring in education, with preference given to students preparing to teach at the elementary level. Additional preference given to Lutheran students. The Columbus Foundation Minority Scholarship (1985) Established with a grant to provide financial aid for disadvantaged students from Columbus or Central Ohio with priority given to minority students. Kenneth E. and K. Gary Cook Endowed Scholarship (2013) Established with a gift from the estate of Sylvia R. Cook in honor of her husband, Ken and her son, Gary (‘73). Awarded to students in the Conservatory of Music. Lawrence (Stadterman) Cornelius Scholarship (2005) Established by Patricia S. Cornelius (’45) in memory of her husband, Lawrence Cornelius (’48). Lawrence, a general practice doctor, eventually became an anesthesiologist who assisted with more than 25,000 surgeries. The scholarship was also established to provide financial assistance to students in remembrance of the Cornelius’s own financial struggles while attending Capital University. Kneel M. Costello Memorial Scholarship (1980) Established by William J. and Doris D. Costello in memory of their son, Kneel, and in honor of Doris’s nursing career. Awarded to students majoring in nursing. Homer R. and Isabelle J. Cotterman Scholarship (2000, Rev. 2003) Established with a gift from the estates of Homer and Isabelle Cotterman. First priority for students from Perry County, second priority for students from Fairfield County, Ohio. Peter and Joni Countryman Endowed Scholarship (2007) Established by Peter (’64) and Joni Countryman. Awarded to upperclass students enrolled in the School of Management who have proven themselves to be good campus citizens by their participation in extracurricular activities. Cozy Cole Scholarship Fund (1980) Established by friends and family in honor of legendary jazz drummer, William Randolph "Cozy" Cole (H’79). Cole was featured in the groups of Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and on hundreds of recordings since 1930. From 1976 to 1980, he was an artist-inresidence, lecturer, and a full-time student in Capital's Conservatory of Music. Cole has the distinction of being the only drummer in the U.S. to have a million-selling hit single, Topsy, in 1958. Awarded to students in the Conservatory of Music. Jerry D. and Genevieve E. Culberson Scholarship (2006) Established by Genevieve “Jenny” Culberson (’55) in memory of her husband, Dr. Jerry D. Culberson (’54). Awarded to students majoring in science. Cyril-Scott Scholarship (1964) Established by E. L. McClelland, president of Cyril-Scott Company. Awarded to students with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5, with preference to a son or daughter of a Cyril-Scott employee. return to top

D Helen K. Daiber Scholarship (1991) Established with a gift from the estate of Helen K. Daiber (’40) in memory of her parents, Ezekiel and Emma Daiber. Scholarship awarded without restriction. Jim and Carol Davis Conservatory of Music Guest Artist in Residence Series (2014) Established by James L. (’71) and Carol A. Davis in gratitude and appreciation for the generosity and foresight of those Capital University donors who have given so generously in the past and have made it possible for succeeding generations to gain insight, skills and knowledge; to enjoy the benefits of higher education; and to achieve their goals. Acknowledging their responsibility to continue this tradition, the Davises have established this program in order to enhance Capital students’ professional preparation and to challenge them to succeed. Jim received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Capital University. Carol’s father, Jay Stratton, graduated from Capital in 1950 and Trinity Lutheran Seminary 1954. Guest artist in residence is selected by committee though a specified submission process for this fund. Jim and Carolyn Davis Music Scholarship (2011) Established by James L. (’71) and Carol A. Davis in gratitude for the higher education Jim received at Capital University which prepared him for his career as a music educator, choral conductor, composer and arranger. Awarded to students enrolled in the Conservatory of Music with demonstrated financial need. Roger F. and Jeannine M. Davis Scholarship (2004) Established by former Capital University Board of Trustees member, Roger (’65) and his wife, Jeannine. Awarded to undergraduate students, with preference given to individuals from the Fredericktown, Ohio area. Jason M. Dean Memorial Scholarship (2002, Rev. 2009) Established by friends and family of Jason Dean (’00) in his memory. Professor Addison and Ruth Dewey Scholarship (1984) Established by Professor (’44) and Mrs. Addison Dewey. Dewey was a member of the Capital University Law School faculty for over 22 years. He served eight years on the ALC National Church Council and was chairperson for four years. In 1981, Professor Dewey received Capital’s Alumni Achievement Award for lifelong contributions to society, the profession and the church. Scholarship awarded to students who are members of a Lutheran Congregation and are responsible persons in the campus community. Herbert and Sara Dieckmann Scholarship (1994) Established by a gift from the estates of Herbert (’26) and Sara Dieckmann. The Brett W. and Kerri J. Doughty Scholarship Established by Brett W. Doughty to honor his wife, Kerri J. Doughty. They both studied accounting while at Capital University, as well as participated in athletics. Following graduation the two dated and eventually married. This scholarship was created to honor Kerri's memory and her commitment to serving others. Kathryn H. Duffey Memorial Scholarship (1988) Established by members of Thea Court No. 5 Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, in memory of member Kathryn H. Duffey. Awarded with preference to students who themselves or their parents have a Masonic affiliation, or to students who are physically handicapped.

E Erik John Earl Scholarship (1991) Established by Dr. and Mrs. Gary W. Earl in memory of their son, Erik J. Earl (1967-1972). Dr. Earl was an associate professor of chemistry at Capital University. Scholarships will be awarded to entering freshmen majoring in chemistry, with preference given to those who plan to enter the medical profession. Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Eccard Scholarship (1992) Established by Walter T. (’68) and Joan E. Eccard; Paul B. Eccard; and Ellen M. Eccard and Wayne Henson in honor of their parents, Walter S. (’41) and Alice Eccard. Awarded to students with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 residing outside of Ohio, with preference given to East Coast residents. Dr. and Mrs. A. Willard Emch Scholarship (2004) Established by Sharon (’61) and Willard (’59) Emch. Awarded with preference to students from northwest Ohio majoring in nursing, pre-medicine or music. return to top

F Preston and Evelyn Fettrow Scholarship (2007) Established by Lynn W. (’66) and Cynthia M. Fettrow in memory of his parents, Preston and Evelyn Fettrow. Awarded to students majoring in education and who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8. Albert W. and Edith V. Flowers Scholarship (1982) Established by the Albert W. and Edith V. Flowers Charitable Foundation in memory of Albert and Edith Flowers, committed Christians, and long-time members of the now disbanded, Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Canton, Ohio. Awarded to students from Stark County, Ohio. J. David and Virginia Jansen Foell Scholarship (2006) Established as a memorial to J. David Foell (’53) by his widow, Virginia and brother, Darrell W. Foell, and in recognition of Foell’s distinguished career as the city manager of Oakwood, Ohio and outstanding contributions in the field of public administration. Awarded to sophomore, junior or senior students majoring in public administration. Joseph F. Frasch Memorial Scholarship (1991) Established by Alice C. Frasch (’31) in memory of her brother, Joseph F. Frasch (’33), a Capital alumnus and former president of Franklin University. Awarded to freshmen students. Freudeman Schaaf Scholarship (2008) Established by Dennis J. (’76) and Deborah Schaaf (’75) Freudeman in honor and memory of their parents, Fredrick D. and Anna Gene Schaaf, and Daniel E. and Dorothy V. Freudeman, who worked hard, appreciated the value of education, believed in giving back and instilled in their children a fondness for education. Endowment income will be used to support the teaching profession by providing scholarships to students majoring in education. Freytag Scholarship (1957) Established by David L. Freytag (’38) in memory of his grandfather, The Rev. Dr. Jacob H. Schneider, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ohio. Charlene Friedley Scholarship (2008) Established by Clinton J. and Charlene Friedley. Charlene is a 1952 graduate of the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Through their scholarship, Charlene hopes to help individuals who love nursing as much as she does. Awarded to students majoring in nursing. Herman and Dorothy Fudge Scholarship (1993) Established by Rev. Herman D. (’26) and Dorothy Fudge. Pastor Fudge served Lutheran parishes in Ohio and Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1970. He regularly attended Capital University football games, even after his 100th birthday. Scholarship awarded without restriction. Fudge Memorial Scholarship (1998) Established by Rev. Herman D. Fudge (’26) in memory of his son, Richard Lawrence Fudge, and daughter, Carolyn Fudge (’52). Pastor Fudge served Lutheran parishes in Ohio and Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1970. G Luella P. Gain Scholarship (2000) Established by Peter Gain in memory of his wife, Luella, and in gratitude for the work in Christian higher education being done at Capital University. Awarded to students majoring in music. John D. Gallatin Scholarship (2006) Established by Andrew Gallatin in memory of his father, John D. Gallatin (’58). Awarded to students majoring in mathematics with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5. Mary Alice Miller Galloway, M.D. Scholarship (1991) Established by Gerald R. Galloway and family in memory of his wife, Mary Alice Miller Galloway (’44). Awarded to students majoring in pre-medicine. If there are no qualified candidates in pre-medicine, the scholarship may be awarded to students majoring in nursing. GAR Foundation Scholarship (1984) Established by the GAR Foundation of Akron, Ohio. Awarded to students from the Akron area. Clara Hollman Gerbich Memorial Scholarship (1977) Established by the estate of Otto George Gerbich in memory of his wife, Clara. Awarded to students preparing for full-time Christian service. Elmer and Berniece Germann Memorial Scholarship (2015) Established by the Rev. George C. (’63, S’67) and Connie Germann (’65) Weinman in memory of Connie’s parents, Berniece and Elmer Germann. Berniece and Elmer were hard working individuals and faithful members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Celina, Ohio. Although they did not have the opportunity to attend college, they believed strongly in the value of higher education. They encouraged the educational interests of their daughters and sacrificed so that Connie and Judy could attend college without the burden of personal debt. Scholarship funds will be awarded to junior or senior students, with preference to students enrolled in a pre-law, accounting, business, communication, computer science, economics, or marketing major or minor, with financial need. Conrad B. Gohdes Memorial Scholarship (1952) Established by Gohdes family members in memory of Professor Conrad B. Gohdes. Gohdes was an ordained Lutheran minister and served pastorates in Baltimore, New Orleans, San Antonio, Kansas City and Ohio. He taught German and history at Capital University from 1912 to 1946. Professor Gohdes was an advocate of English language in the literature and work of the Lutheran Church in America and served as a translator of the Lenker edition of Martin Luther’s works. Scholarship awarded without restriction. Griffin Endowed Scholarship (1986) Established by Edwin M. and Marjorie N. Griffin in order to assist students in obtaining a Christian higher education. Awarded to students who have completed at least 25 percent of the requirements for graduation and are in the top 50 percent of their class academically. Recipients are encouraged to give similar assistance to future Capital students. Charles and Margaret Bundy Grimm Scholarship Martha U. Grimm Endowed Scholarship (2000) Established by Martha U. Hawkins Heldt Music Scholarship (2012) Established with a gift from the estate of Lewis R. Heldt in memory of his wife, Ruth V. Hawkins Heldt. It was Lewis's desire to honor Ruth's life by establishing a scholarship to assist students in obtaining a college degree. The Couple held a lifelong interest in higher education and a commitment to community involvement. The church was also an important part of their lives. Ruth was a graduate of the University of Toledo and taught in the Ohio public school system for 35 years. Hetrick Jr., in honor of their parents and grandparents, who instilled in them a love of education and lifelong learning. Ida (Gahn) and Abner Hetrick lived in rural northern Ohio and were active members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lindsey, Ohio. Knowlton Memorial Scholarship (2012) Established with a gift from the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation. Austin E. Knowlton (19092003) was owner and chairman of Knowlton Construction Company located in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Knowlton was a leading philanthropist and avid sportsman. The Ohio State School of Architecture is named in his honor. Knowlton was one of the original founders of the Cincinnati Bengals, held a major ownership interest in the Cincinnati Reds for many years, and was a trustee of the Little Brown Jug Society for harness racing. The Austin E. Knowlton Foundation was established by him in 1981 to promote and advance higher education. After receiving her master’s degree in 1958 from the University of Michigan, Dorothea began a very successful career as an elementary teacher in the Youngstown City School System. Harold W. and Margaret Guinsler Linker Memorial Scholarship (1993) Established by Harold W. Linker (’31) and family in memory his wife, Margaret (’33). At the time of Harold’s death the family added his name to the scholarship. Awarded to students majoring in keyboard pedagogy – organ emphasis, with preference given to those individuals intending to become involved in a Christian church as an organist or choir director. Awarded to students preparing for the ministry. Gene Mechling Scholarship (1975) Established by family and friends in memory of H. Eugene Mechling ('31). While a student at Capital University, Gene participated in football, basketball, track, and golf. After college, he played semi-pro basketball in Central Ohio and began a career centered on athletics as a teacher, coach and official. Gene taught at Bexley Junior and Senior High Schools for thirty years before retiring. The purpose of the Gene Mechling Scholarship is to recognize athletic distinction and to aid students with demonstrated financial need. Arthur Mees Memorial Scholarship (1941) Established by Susan H. John G. and Joan Ott Mittermaier Music Scholarship (2009) Established by John G. Mittermaier (’45, S’47), and Alan (’71) and Linda Meuser (’73) Mittermaier in gratefulness for the many opportunities for which the family has been blessed and in honor of Alan’s parents, John and Joan Ott (’47) Mittermaier. John and Joan met at Capital University on the first day of school in the fall of 1941 and over the years enjoyed attending many campus activities together, especially music events. Montgomery, and in recognition of her talents, dedication, caring attitude, and outstanding contributions in the fields of speech and dramatics. Awarded to students majoring in speech, theater or music theater. Charles A. and Ethel C. Moyer Scholarship (2011) Established by Charles (’51) and Ethel (’53) Moyer to fuel the intellectual passions of Capital University students for generations to come. The Moyers met as students during the post-war era at Capital. Charles was employed as a researcher by the Timken Company for 38 years and Ethel worked as a kindergarten teacher. Nanciann Kaufman Ninde Scholarship (1989) Established by Richard Ninde in honor of his wife’s graduation from Capital University in 1986. Scholarship awarded without restriction. 1958 Nursing Scholarship (2015) Established by members of the Capital University Nursing Class of 1958, and their family and friends to honor those classmates who have participated in the group’s ongoing roundrobin letter writing campaign. While in school, these women forged a deep friendship that has endured for nearly sixty years. This scholarship commemorates their call to service, and their lifelong commitment to caring for those in-need and for each other. School of Nursing Endowed Lab Fee Fund (2004) Established anonymously in recognition of the need for well-educated nurses in Central Ohio, and in endorsement of Capital's nursing program. Robert practiced law for 29 years at his father’s (Nelson Lancione) law firm; David joined him at the firm in 1977. Awarded to nursing students with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 experiencing genuine financial hardship and/or the inability to complete his or her education without supplemental support in spite of federal and state-based aid.

Oestreich Scholarship (1992) Established by Eugene C. and Ruth Oestreich (’52) Harsch in memory of Ruth’s parents, Henry (’25) and Martha (’28). Awarded to junior or senior students preparing for a career in a service profession such as pre-seminary, nursing or teaching.

P Walter J. And Mildred L. Paff Scholarship (1993) Established with a gift from the estates of Walter J. and Mildred L. Paff. Luetta S. Papenfus Award (2008) Established by Linda M. (’65) and Melvin C. Parks in memory of Linda’s mother, Luetta S. Papenfus (1921-1996). Luetta, a registered nurse for over 32 years, dedicated her life to serving God and others. She raised seven children in the Toledo area, and was proud to send her daughter, Linda Papenfus Parks, to Capital University. After 30 successful years in education, Linda retired as a schoolteacher at Leawood Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio. Awarded to undergraduate students experiencing extreme hardship. Josephine R. Otto Schenk Scholarship (2015) Established by trustees of the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church (the beneficiaries of Otto Schenk’s estate) in order to assist Lutheran students in their education at Capital University. Schenk was a leading philanthropist, prominent Wheeling, West Virginia businessman, lifelong Lutheran, and a close friend of Capital University President, Otto Mees. Schenk provided funding toward the construction of Capital’s Divinity Hall, which was named in honor of the Schenk family in 1925. U Aya Ueki International Student Endowment Fund (2007) Established by Hideo and Hiromi Ueki in memory of their daughter, Aya Ueki. Aya came to study at Capital from Japan, and was a student at the university at the time of her death. In order to broaden global understanding through international study, the fund will provide financial assistance to ESL (English as a Second Language), and undergraduate international students contributing in a positive fashion to campus life at Capital University. Vernon, Ohio. Carlos was committed to the support of deserving students and often mentored banking students. He believed in paying it forward, strengthening Capital University's mission of excellence, and contributing to future generations of the Cap Family. Theodore and Lydia were the loving parents of four children. They reared their children on a small farm near Rockford, Ohio, and were active community participants and faithful members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Liberty Township. Although neither of them had the opportunity to attend college, they believed strongly in the value of education and encouraged the educational interests of their children. Three of their children, Ruth Ann, Naomi, and George, are graduates of Capital University. Capital University established the "Hugo C. Wenzel Award of Merit" in his honor, and in 1990 he received the university’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award. Awarded to students with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in their major and 2.0 in other subjects, with the amount of the scholarship to be awarded equally between students majoring in music and those majoring in fine arts. Harold S. Wheaton Scholarship (1985) Established by Harold Wheaton (’47) in honor of his parents. Carolyn A. Hill Wieneke Music Scholarship (2009) Established by Carolyn A. Wieneke (’57) in loving memory of her parents and as a way of “paying back” to the institution that offered her strong lifetime friendships and opportunities for service. Wieneke hopes that other Capital alumni will make similar gifts in support of the mission of the university and its students. Z Sarah Marie Zerkel Scholarship (2000, Rev. 2007) Established by Ronald B. Zerkel (’65) in memory of his mother, Sarah, a dedicated Sunday school teacher, and in remembrance of the financial assistance Ronald received from Capital University as a student. Funds will be awarded to returning students enrolled in the ministry track curricula of the religion department, with financial need, and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Dennis and Kathryn Zimmerman Diehl Study Abroad Scholarship (2000) Established by Kimberly A. Diehl Yanes (’92) in memory of her parents, Dennis (’67) and Kathryn Zimmerman (’67) Diehl. Awarded to deserving Capital students in order to assist with their study abroad opportunity. Richard Zollinger Scholarship Established by Dr. Richard W. Zollinger. Awarded to students majoring in biology or chemistry on a pre-medicine track. William and Florence Fraas Zoltner Scholarship (2004) Established with a gift from the estates of William (’38, S’42) and Florence Zoltner.
