Engaged Learning Model Five Year Plan (DRAFT) Rationale The Huntsville Independent School District aspires to prepare all children for many choices, give them the tools and attitudes to contribute to our democratic way of life, and to live successfully in a rapidly changing world. This aspiration is imperative to our work and will allow us to engage students in learning environments that include prioritized learning

DRAFT standards, the use of multiple assessments to determine success, and the utilization of digital tools to inspire students to persist in their learning. To that end, we have embarked on a journey of transformation and are committed to the tenets of A New Vision for Public Education in Texas. Our current transformation efforts include: ● defining a district vision to provide “for our children’s unlimited success” ● engaging district and school leaders in the TASA Academy for Transformational Leadership ● designing a framework for engaging students in profound learning experiences (including professional development and digital tools) and ● revisions to our policies and procedures to remove barriers to becoming a learning organization. To respond to the digital learner, the HISD has designed and implemented one-to-one initiatives at several campuses in selected grade levels and plans to expand the initiative to other campuses and grade levels.

Objective Huntsville ISD aspires to provide a learning environment “For our children’s unlimited success”.

Goals • To increase our capacity to design engaging lessons to promote profound student learning. • To maximize the district’s investment in previous initiatives • To build capacity by preparing leaders to re-design learning for students. • To engage parents and the community by creating a vision for our children and their future.

Outline The Huntsville Independent School District aspires to prepare all children for many choices, give them the tools and attitudes to contribute to our democratic way of life, and live successfully in a rapidly changing world. In order to create the learning environment necessary to ensure our children’s unlimited success this plan focuses on: 1. Professional Learning, 2. Communication Plan (Engage2Learn: Designing Transformation), 3. Leadership Development 4. Partnerships 5. Measurement

DRAFT HISD DESIGNING TRANSFORMATION The Professional Learning plan for HISD Designing Transformation: HISD will build capacity by establishing a culture of collaboration and professional growth through the strengthening of Campus Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), preparing district leadership through the Engage2Learn Coaches Academy and Leadership Academy, implementing the Digital content as a Learning Tool and Digital Tools to Engage Students in the Learning Environment series of professional learning, iTunes U and similar resources for Teachers, and Instructional Technology Tools. To engage stakeholders in the work of the HISD Designing Transformation: HISD and an Engage2Learn facilitator will guide the development of the project. The Designing Transformation components of Engage2Learn include communication with Community/Parents, the HISD School Board, Students and Staff, and Local Government/Business. Capacity building for the Designing Transformation project will include Leadership Development through the N2 Learning Leadership Academy at ESC 6, the HISD Assistant Principals Academy, the Engage2Learn Leaders Academy, Teachers as Leaders and Designers with the Schlechty Center, and ongoing professional collaboration with the district Leadership Team. HISD Designing Transformation: HISD will leverage existing partnerships with Sam Houston State University, Engage2Learn, the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce, the City of Huntsville, the, Lonestar Community College Montgomery County Connection, Local Businesses, and Faith Organizations. HISD will conduct an evening and lunch time forum (in 2 languages through technology), a community survey, a series of focus meetings for specialized groups (i.e. parents, community, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, etc.) to collect data from our stakeholders. A Design Team of 30-35 participants will analyze the data and work collaboratively to strategically plan for the work and expectations of HISD. The Design Team is a diverse group of people that represent the different groups of stakeholders within our district. Their work requires 4-5 full days over the course of several months, some are consecutive days of work.

DRAFT SUSTAINING THE ENGAGEMENT If indeed the Huntsville Independent School District aspires to prepare all children for many choices, give them the tools and attitudes to contribute to our democratic way of life, and live successfully in a rapidly changing world it is imperative that our work engages students in learning environments that include redesigned learning standards, the use of multiple assessments, and the utilization of digital tools to inspire students to persist in their learning. To sustain this work, the following long-range plan (2021) provides a brief outline of the journey ahead.

DRAFT Student Technology Tools for Engagement and Profound Learning Tablets and Chromebooks for students to use in the Engaged Learning Model - In the past, maintaining a classroom-based computer cart has been difficult. Students moving from class to class have to log into a central network or be limited to the installed (and hard-to-maintain) software on each machine. 1:1 Tablets and Chromebooks offer opportunities for greater student engagement with: 1. The ability to use machines with virtually no machine set-up for different users 2. A “stateless” environment for a personalized experience, available to all students and teachers just by signing in 3. Access to a vast array of educational sites, online experiences, textbooks, and apps that promote learning, collaboration and creativity

2015-2016 Devices to support 1:1 environment for staff and students in pilot classes, devices for remaining staff, laptops for pilot teachers, prepare the network, begin student Tech program to support devices. The plan is to use existing devices plus new devices necessary to offer a 1:1 model.

Funding from local, Title I, and Instructional Materials Allotment: $500,000

DRAFT Evaluation The HISD will use several groups of statistical data to measure the success of implementing an Engaged Learning Model. Partnering with the Sam Houston State University Department of Education the district will have an outside evaluator to provide unbiased information to the district and our stakeholders. This partnership is in the development process, but will be in place to measure the initial stages of the project through the five years of implementation and sustainability. Data points of measurement: Community Engagement Data from Forum Data from Survey Data from Focus Groups Gallup Poll Student Engagement (measured in walk-through model) Staff attendance Staff retention Student attendance Student discipline referrals Student success with coursework (pass/fail rates) Student growth measured by state assessments Student success measured by state assessments Narrowing of the achievement gap as measured by state assessments DRAFT (for Review)
