Students in these fields learn to letter by hand, even though they will be doing much of their work on the computer, because design sketches are always done in pencil, as are many other types of sketches such as preliminary drafts, and design ideas. Overview: Lettering must be neat and readable – Should use all capital letters Tools Traditional hand sketching Computer Aided Drawing (a large industry producing computer packages they may have heard of in AutoCad, ProEngineer, SolidWorks) Media (how we record) Paper – helpful to know about Standard Sizes (Table 1) and Title Blocks Alphabet of lines examples of line types. Freehand Lettering Developing good lettering is a personal skill which takes practice. Letters must be formed properly. T... Freehand lettering is used in many types of technical work. Conventional drawing must have notes, instructions, materials, and descriptions clearly shown Memos must be readable Letter shapes are designed by standards such as the ANSI (American National Standards Institute Or ASME This avoids catching and tearing the paper Examples of form and proportions are shown. Letters must be open and clear as possible for readability. Steps for forming a letters Steps for forming a letters

The reason for using all caps is that someone could reduce the size of their original drawing on the copy machine. The capital letters can be reduce by 50% and still be readable. We expect good quality lettering and the lettering to be done in vertical gothic font. Tell the students that this guide to good lettering is on the website. 7. 7. Freehand Lettering Developing good lettering is a personal skill which takes practice. Letters must be formed properly. They must be open shaped very legible. Clear communication is essential to avoid mistakes and reduce waste. Lettering may be done using a drafting type pencil, lead holder or technical pen. Which ever tool is used, the letters must properly formed and very black 8. 8. Freehand Lettering Pull the pencil or pen across the paper. All lettering strokes should be a pulling motion. Right-handed and left-handed drafters may have to develop different styles for forming letters. Press down hard when using a pencil. 9. 9. Freehand Lettering Vertical capital letters are preferred for most technical work. They are formed within a 6 by 6 grid. 10. 10. Straight Line letters Most letters are slightly narrower than they are tall. The shapes of the letters are as open as possible. Letters with small loops and crossing strokes are avoided 11. 11. Straight Line letters This sequence is recommended to assure that each letter is the correct width in relation in height. For example, form the two vertical sides of the “H”, “N” and “M” first. Form the top of the “T” first. 12. 12. Straight Line letters The “H” and “N” are slightly narrower than they are tall. The “T” and the “M” are just as wide as they are tall Note: Proportion: width vs. height is very important in forming letters. 13. 13. Lettering
