English 10 – Summer Reading Assignment All Blake students entering English 10 in the fall will complete the assigned reading and correlating assignments. Completed assignments are due the second day of school. Required Text:

Rules of the Game by Amy Tan The Good Daughter by Caroline Hwang The Dare by Roger Hoffman These short stories are available on Blake High School’s web page. Required Assignments: 1. Complete one characterization graphic organizer for each short story. Students will submit a total of three characterization graphic organizers. These organizers are included in the file with the stories on Blake’s web page. 2. In a well- developed paragraph write a one paragraph response in which you make a personal connection to the story, character, setting, and/or theme. A paragraph planning worksheet and a worksheet for writing your paragraph are included in this packet. a. Your well-developed paragraph must include a claim, a minimum of two examples and analysis of your personal connection to the text. b. Example claim: In the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, I relate to Jonas’ experiences as a young man discovering the hidden truths about the world. All assignments should be typed or neatly handwritten.

Suggestion: While you are only required to read three short stories, you will find it to your advantage to read as much as possible over the summer. You should certainly read books you enjoy, but also you should read books that are challenging for you.
