English 12 & 12’s Honor Summer Reading 17-18 SUMMER READING: English 12 & 12 H This summer you will be reading 1984 by George Orwell. In addition to the reading, you will complete the following dialectical journal assignment. You will select 20 total quotes from the novel to deepen your understanding and to focus your reading. The quotes you select will not be chosen at random, but must fall into the following categories (and be labeled appropriately): 1. Point of View/Perspective 2. Setting 3. Tone 4. Syntax 5. Diction 6. Theme 7. Form/Structure/Plot 8. Character development 9. Symbolism 10. Irony DIRECTIONS: 1. Review the above list of terms. Refresh your knowledge or look up any unfamiliar terms. You may use the Internet or a literary terms book to do so. Your local libraries will allow you free access to the Internet as well as the use of literary reference books. 2. While reading the novel select 2 quotes per category that you believe exemplify each term. 3. Compile your quotes in an organized dialectical journal (an example has been provided). Please include page numbers for each quote you provide. Make sure the quote is labeled/organized with the corresponding category. 4. In addition to locating and labeling the quote, you must provide a detailed response. This response must analyze why your text selection is an appropriate example of each category. In other words, if you choose a passage you believe is “irony”, your analysis should strive to explain in what way the text is ironic. 5. Choose your quotes carefully, and strive to choose them from a variety of pages. Choosing quotes from the span of the entire novel helps you to explore the whole text, not just the beginning chapters. 6. Your 20 quotes must all be unique. You may not use the same quote more than once.

Analysis
English 12 & 12’s Honor Summer Reading (3)
Tone
In the opening passage of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the author introduces the novel’s tone by the choice of words he uses. Words such as “cruising”, “flutter”, and “rest” imply a sense of calmness and waiting. The audience can also associate the boat’s slow pace with the slow journey that Marlowe and the men will take as they travel deeper and deeper into themselves and the surrounding environment.

Diction
The author’s use of the word “coma” implies that Gregor’s unconsciousness was more than just a deep sleep. People in comas are generally injured, and require extra care and attention. Gregor’s transformation requires him to have additional help from his family in order to survive in his new form. Kafka implies that Gregor’s transformation is serious and problematic, although neither he nor his family has realized it yet.
“The Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a flutter of the sails, and was at rest.”
“It was already dusk when Gregor awoke from his deep, comalike sleep.”
**** You must submit a typed dialectical to Turnitin.com upon submission of SR assignment. ****Dialectical Journals should be simple. No need to use a binder, folder, or any such cover. Just organize neatly and turn in the stapled template. ****If you choose not to complete the assignment over the summer, you will only have the first 2 weeks of school, outside of class, to complete the reading and DJ.
