1. EDITORIAL COMMENT Book of Abstracts EUROPEAN MEDICAL FITNESS CONGRESS 2016 We are proud to present the Book of Abstracts for the EUROPEAN MEDICAL FITNESS CONGRESS 2016 - "EXERCISE IS THE BEST MEDICINE". EUROPEAN MEDICAL FITNESS CONGRESS is the annual multidisciplinary meeting about physical exercise in the prevention and treatment of diseases and for "Special Populations" (people with diseases, 3rd age, pregnant women, etc.). EUROPEAN CONGRESS MEDICAL FITNESS born under the premise of joining forces for a common goal: to help people. We wish to contribute to improve health, and for this it is crucial that we share information and knowledge. EUROPEAN CONGRESS MEDICAL FITNESS is an opportunity so that great doctors, researchers and internationally renowned experts share experiences, while also encourage to knowledge to the health professionals and students from across Europe. We can’t and should not view health only from a standpoint. In the present day, we count with an enormous amount of research proving that the practice of regular physical activity is essential and also beneficial for the construction, maintenance and recovery of a good health. We can’t continue treating diseases from a single viewpoint: the recovery via pharmacological treatments, surgeries, hospitalizations, etc. This should be the last option. With 30 minutes of moderate daily exercise and a balanced diet we can reduce the mortality considerably. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity is the direct cause of two million deaths a year. That is avoidable. In the present day, between 60 and 80% of the world population leads a sedentary lifestyle, and this is a very negative data.

According to recent epidemiological studies, in 2020 cardiovascular disease and cancer will account for over 70% of global mortality, and of this amount, 85% will occur in developing countries. Lack of physical activity doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, and increases the risk of cancer, hypertension, osteoporosis, depression and anxiety. There are several scientific evidences proving that physical exercise, both in the prevention as in the treatment of diseases, is really effective. Exercise can reduce by 58% the risk of diabetes, and is also an effective treatment. Exercise reduces the development of osteoporosis and, consequently, reduces bone fractures by 41% in postmenopausal women. It can reduce anxiety by 48% and may be even higher percentage depending the person. Depression can be reduced by 47% with the application of controlled exercise programs. The mortality risk can be reduced by 23%, and is also an excellent inhibitor of chronic fatigue. Is important to highlight that the pharmaceutical industry invests billions of euros in research to develop new drugs for the most different diseases, but in no case considers physical activity as an effective solution. Fortunately there are many studies proving that physical exercise is the best medicine. Of course, in the treatments based on physical exercise, it is essential to make a correct prescription of exercise in terms of quantity, intensity, type of training, and respect the individuality of each person and the characteristics of the disease. It is also important to remember that health spending of disease is very high. In this sense, the exercise can avoid surgery if attention to prevention care is provided. But in the case that a surgical intervention will be required, the active functional recovery based on movement and exercise can minimize the time of internment in hospitals, accelerating the process of recovery. Exercise also reduces drug costs. Exercise, in addition to improving the quality of life, is a great cost-saving measure for the healthcare system.

We have a lot of work. We must think about promoting actions in order to help to improve the life of people, and we need to do it together, among all the health professionals, each one with its responsibility and providing its knowledge. EUROPEAN CONGRESS MEDICAL FITNESS was born under this philosophy, and the realization of this important event has a great significance, which is making possible a paradigm shift in the way that health is currently dealt. No part of our body works in isolation and, based on this premise, we, health professionals, should not do it. In no way we can forget that the most important is people. I would like to congratulate all the participants for the high quality of the abstracts submitted. And I also want to thank the members of the Scientific Committee for their great work. See you at the EUROPEAN MEDICAL FITNESS CONGRESS 2017 edition!

INTRODUCTION Several studies have been performed on more than 1,000 competitive athletes about the morphologic concepts of the "athlete heart" using M-mode echocardiography. Long-term athletic training produces relatively mild but predictable alterations in cardiac structure that result in an increase in calculated left ventricular mass. The effect of training regimen on morphology of the heart in recreational marathoners and its influence on race performance remain unknown. OBJETIVE To determine the influence of training regimen on morphology of heart in recreational marathoners and to analyze whether race performance is depending on changes of cardiac structure. METHODS Twenty two healthy voluntary unprofessional athletes who participated in 2014 Madrid Marathon were recruited for this study. Finally, the marathoners who

managed to finish the race were 16 athletes (44.7 ± 6.2 yrs). Resting echocardiographic examination was performed in each participant two weeks before the marathon race. Training diaries were collected during the month before the competition. In addition, resting heart rate was measured before and after the competition, and at 4 and 24 hours after finish the race. The participants were divided in two groups in accordance with their time race by percentile 50 (fast and slow runners), with cut-point at 3h 33min. RESULTS Fast group showed an increase of 39% in volume of left atrium (VOLAI) compared to slow group (p
