FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA SEM 1, 2011/2012 SMU 2112 –Introduction to Mechanics of Materials ASSIGNMENT 2 (Due 11 Nov 2011) Q1 A tension test was performed on a specimen having an original diameter of 12.5 mm and a gauge length of 50 mm. The data are listed in the table. (a) Plot the stress-strain diagram. Use a scale of 20 mm = 50 MPa and 20 mm = 0.05 mm/mm. (b) Determine the modulus of elasticity, ultimate stress and fracture stress. (c) Redraw the linear-elastic region, using the same stress scale, but a strain scale of 20 mm = 0.001 mm/mm.

Q2 The stress-strain diagram for a steel alloy having an original diameter of 12 mm and a gauge length of 50 mm is given in the figure below. Determine the modulus of elasticity, the load on the specimen that causes yielding, and the ultimate load the specimen will support.

Q3

The linkage is made from three pin-connected 304 stainless steel with elastic modulus of 193 GPa. Each member has a cross-sectional area of 450 mm2. If a horizontal force, P = 30 kN is applied to the end B of member AB, determine the horizontal displacement of point B.

Q4 The bronze C86100 shaft is subjected to the axial loads shown. Determine the displacement of end A with respect to end D. The diameters of each segment are dAB = 15 mm, dBC = 40 mm and dCD = 10 mm. Elastic modulus is 105 GPa.
