Dear Partners in Caring: Since the spring issue of Partners we have experienced life-changing events in Cedar Rapids and here at Mercy Medical Center. Who could have anticipated that flood waters would extend ten blocks beyond the river and force necessary evacuations of all the patients in the hospital and in Hallmar? But it happened. Since those very eventful days in June 2008, we have “risen above it” thanks to the efforts of so many community volunteers, vendors, contractors, employees and friends from all over. Today, we are proud to show off the fruits of our labor. The hospital is beautiful, and we encourage you to stop for a visit. You’ll like what you see. A grand re-dedication and public open house of the Lundy Pavilion was celebrated on September 28, 2008, with a Mass said by Archbishop Jerome Hanus O.S.B We were saddened this past year by the loss of two inspirational leaders at Mercy. J. Edward Lundy and Abbott Lipsky were both charter members of our Founders’ Society and emeritus members of the Foundation Board. Mercy will be forever grateful for their generous gifts of time, talent and treasure. Their legacies live on through two special ways—the naming of Lundy Pavilion and the annual Lipsky Lecture Series held for all employees here at Mercy. While we have challenges ahead, we also have exciting new opportunities. Your gifts are needed to support our areas of greatest need and to continue to assist those devastated by the floods. It is my prayer for all of us, in the words of Catherine McAuley: “Let us rejoice when good is done, no matter by whom it may be accomplished.” Together, with your help, we are rising above all this, “better than ever.” Gratefully,

Flood Relief Fund Assists Mercy Employees On June 13th, Mercy Foundation created the employee Flood relief Fund. since that time over $200,000 has been received from Mercy employees, physicians, individuals and organizations.

immediate assistance totaling $119,700 was distributed to 141 employees who were severely impacted by the flood. 32 of those employees lost their homes. in addition to monies raised, more than 1175 hours of paid leave were donated by Mercy employees to help their fellow co-workers. a brief respite from flood recovery occurred in July when Mercy helped bring “summer santa” to town. Free new toys and school supplies were distributed to 500 area children and parents. efforts are now underway to continue financial support for those with the most critical housing needs. Unity in Mercy’s Community Foundations in residences shifted, floors bowed, walls cracked and furnishings were ruined. The Flood of 2008 left many homes—and dreams—destroyed, but it couldn’t overcome the tide of goodwill flood-impacted Mercy employees received from their workplace. In the disaster’s overwhelming aftermath, the Mercy Foundation almost immediately established an Employee Flood Relief Fund. Each employee directly impacted by the flood received a $750 gift card to help with critical needs. Long-term needs continue to be addressed as employees rebuild and recover. In all, 221 Mercy employees have been significantly affected by the flood. Erika White, a financial counselor at MercyCare Blairs Ferry, her husband, Shawn, and their children, ages seven and three, lost their Vinton home in the flood. On June 11, the water was 103 feet away from their home; by 10 p.m. the water was at their back step. The Whites evacuated and moved in with Shawn’s parents, where they remain until they can buy a new home. Erika received a call from the Foundation office asking about her situation. When she returned to work, she received the $750 gift card. “It was nice to know that, even though Mercy was going through so much on its own, it still cared about its employees,” says Erika. “They said to use the gift card to help with any needs we may have. I haven’t heard about other companies who have been so great with their employees.” While at work in the Information Services department at Mercy Medical Center, Palo resident Deb Thomas got a panicked phone call from her daughter Chelsea, 24, on June 9—the day before the flood reached Palo. Chelsea had taken a call from the city warning them of the impending flood. Deb remembers, “I told her to calm down and not

to panic. We have never flooded. The closest it had ever been, even in ’93, is two blocks away.” When she left work that day, Deb fully intended to return to work as usual June 10, but the flood changed those plans as her basement filled with water. Fortunately, they had moved their basement furniture to the first floor of the ranch-style home she shared with husband Phil. The Thomas family stayed with friends for five weeks during the clean-up period. Deb says, “I called in (to work) and my boss said ‘take care of your house. Take care of what you need.’ And I got paid the whole time.” A few days later, she adds, “Janice Charles got hold of me to say there were funds for displaced employees. This meant we were taken care of. While my employer was suffering, they cared. Psychologically, it was huge. You’re looking at total destruction of your belongings and beyond that, the things that made your house function. We knew we’d have all those expenses and to know my employer was helping was huge. It was the first money we received.” Deb came back to work June 19 and says, “It was good to come in and see the progress to get Mercy up and running again. I knew I had a job. I knew my workplace would survive. So I could concentrate on making us survive.” A clean-up crew, organized through Mercy Medical Center, showed up at the Thomas home to help. The crew, including Ben Charles, 23, (son of Tim Charles, President & CEO of Mercy Medical Center), “spent three days at our place and did just about everything, down to cleaning and bleaching,” she says gratefully. Erika’s and Deb’s comments echo a common and deep appreciation for their employer, Mercy. Deb’s family is back in their home with some sense of normalcy restored. For Erika’s family, it could be one to two years before they know exactly what will happen with their Vinton home. But one thing for sure—Erika, like other Mercy employees who suffered flood devastation, knows she has the continued support of her co-workers and the Mercy Foundation.

Hospice House respite care One Family’s Story

In 2002 Inga Strait, 62 was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her health declined rapidly. She was admitted to Mercy Medical Center in January 2008 and by March was placed in Hospice of Mercy care. The Strait family known for their passion for basketball, had always included Inga in her granddaughter Courtney’s basketball Panther team’s events. With the Girls’ 13U State Championship game scheduled for the last week in February, Inga’s daughter Renell (aunt of Courtney and her assistant coach) knew that her mother could no longer attend the games. Inga’s husband, Jerry, also a dedicated fan was faced with the dilemma of how to care for Inga and also attend the championship tournament. Jerry knew that there was a hospice “respite care” service and that Inga was in need of that level of attention in order for the family to be able to attend the State tourney. While Inga was cared for at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, the rest of the Strait family was able to watch the Panther team win their record setting eighth state title. It was a win-win situation for all. As Inga’s health continued to deteriorate, Hospice care was brought into the Strait’s home. Jerry and Renell were pleasantly surprised that during a pastoral care home visit the family dog was even included in a blessing. Inga died peacefully on March 10, 2008. Her family was not alone during her final journey—Hospice was there too. The Straits’ journey continues today with moments of grief, many memories and the milestones of approaching anniversaries. And Hospice is still there, offering bereavement counseling, support groups and education programs for families who have lost a loved one. “Losing a spouse is such a traumatic happening, that it would be almost unbearable without the Hospice staff and their professionalism and genuine concern,” Jerry said. The decision to become a nurse doesn’t come easy. It means acknowledging early in your college career that you’ll be spending countless hours studying and engaged in demanding course work. It’s all about understanding and embracing commitment yet many nursing students will tell you that they enjoy the rigors of the program and their passion to build a career in nursing drives this pursuit. Meet Stephanie Greif, a junior in the nursing program at Mount Mercy College. She typifies that spirit of enthusiasm and dedication. Her goal, after she graduates with a BSN degree and is a licensed RN, is to work at Mercy.

Some facts about Stephanie: • Graduate of Xavier High School • Dean’s List at both Kirkwood and Mount Mercy • Decision to become a nurse influenced by observing the level of care her grandfather received as a patient at Mercy • Stephanie’s aunt, a nurse in Des Moines, also was a role model for her career decision; her family has always been a strong support system • Works part-time at Mercy in the cardiac stroke unit • Will participate in an internship at Mercy between her junior and senior year at Mount Mercy • Would like to work in either the cardiac stroke unit or intensive care • Plans to do a mission trip to Africa after graduation • Would like to pursue an advanced nursing degree and someday become a midwife or a nurse practioner Visiting recently with Stephanie she said, “I’ve started to find myself—I love to study and learn and want to make a difference in this world. I chose nursing because it allows me to use my full potential as a human being. My goal is to listen to my patients—to be a teacher, mentor and detective so that I can be more effective as a nurse.” As Stephanie pursues her nursing degree, the financial assistance she is receiving from the Jennie E. Basile Endowed Nursing Scholarship will help prepare her for her future nursing career. She shared, “a nursing scholarship allows me to spend less time working and more time studying. I’ve made my education a priority and I’m working hard to achieve my goals, especially as I tackle a wide variety of demanding courses! Scholarship assistance also helps me to alleviate some of the financial responsibility my parents are assuming to pay for my college education.” Stephanie’s instructors at Mount Mercy have noted her commitment to excel in her profession. She’s driven to be the best she can be, and looks forward to working at Mercy with her colleagues who share her commitment to provide the best in patient care.

Mercy’s Youngest Patients Benefit from Peregrine Charities Gift A child’s first introduction to a hospital often comes with a trip to the emergency room. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from Peregrine Charities, that experience has become less intimidating. Mercy Medical Center was presented a check for $50,000 from Russell and Connie Wasendorf Sr., founders of Peregrine Charities, for its Emergency Department Renovation project specifically to meet the needs of pediatric patients and young visitors. The funding enabled Mercy to incorporate extra amenities into the project that lessen anxiety and provide distractions during a child’s visit. Items included colorful murals, brightlycolored child-size furniture, a virtual aquarium, flat screen televisions and four Phunzone touchscreens that provide interactive games and activities. Mercy’s Emergency Department underwent a $3.5 million major renovation to accommodate the increasing volume of patients and create a more familyfriendly environment. The new Fast Track area, designed to see patients with minor illnesses or injuries within 30 minutes, has doubled its volume in patients since its inception in 2006. 40% of patients treated in this area are children. Dr. Mark Pospisil, Emergency Department Medical Director, states, “We are extremely grateful to the Wasendorf family and Peregrine Board of Directors for allowing us to create more accessible, efficient and kid-friendly spaces. Their gift will do wonders to relieve anxiety and calm nerves of both children and parents.”

a lifetime devoted to If you were growing up in Cedar Rapids back in the 50’s, you might have had the good fortune to have Arlene Beman as your third grade teacher! During a recent visit with Arlene, she shared some of the extraordinary experiences of her life. Her love of learning is evident in everything she has accomplished and she continues to discover new vistas of interest and involvement. Her passion for education started early in life. She loved to learn, and had originally planned on a career as a psychiatrist. She graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in psychology and sociology, received a M.A, from the University of Toledo in Ohio, and pursued advanced studies for her doctoral degree at Ohio State University before retiring. Her “continuing” education spanned over 30 years of her life. After graduation from Northwestern, she decided to teach elementary school, spending five years in Cedar Rapids as the third grade teacher at Garfield School, then later in Sandusky, Ohio. New career opportunities moved her from the classroom to administrative roles including responsibilities as an elementary school principal, a supervisory position in the Newark, Ohio schools, then working for the Ohio State Department of Education in teacher assessment. She taught summer classes to other teachers at Ohio State University on techniques of remedial reading and found time to also co-author a book on the subject. Her love for learning spilled over into world travel. She literally has seen the world and noted her “five greatest thrills” included: walking a challenging part of the Great Wall of China, traveling through the Panama Canal, visiting the Fatima Shrine in Portugal, meeting Pope Pius XII and seeing the great Buddha statue in Japan. She even spent three months back in the 60’s traveling through Mexico learning about the culture. She summed up her years of travel by noting, “I loved the adventure and was always ready to go, always ready to learn.” Over the years and closer to home, Arlene has chosen Mercy as her hospital. She noted, “the facilities and the changing technology have always been impressive, as are the private patient rooms and, of course, the wonderful nursing staff.”

learning and Giving Choosing to support the mission of Mercy, and in particular, educational opportunities available to the hospital’s nursing staff, Arlene recently created a gift plan to provide her with income during her life and then fund a future, endowed nursing scholarship. This will provide financial assistance to generations of Mercy nurses who would like to pursue an advanced nursing degree. By establishing a charitable gift annuity, she receives annual payments from the Mercy Foundation for life, and the opportunity to utilize a charitable deduction. Because of her love of life and learning, her generous spirit and a willingness to help others, Arlene has touched many lives. She continues to make a difference, helping to make the world a better place.

Just over a year ago, I joined the dedicated team of professionals at Mercy Medical Center and, in particular, the Mercy Foundation. After working almost 16 years with the Kirkwood Foundation, it was time to turn in a new direction. Most of my life’s work has been in the nonprofit world and as a mission-driven person, I love my work, my career, and I’m honored to call Mercy my home. The past year has flown by and presented us with both challenges and opportunities. We’ve made changes at the Foundation along the way, tackling small and big projects designed to bring more accountability and organization to our work. We’ve added new staff, changed and updated our internal operational structure, streamlining how we do business so that we can better serve the needs of Mercy. We are here for the hospital, for you, and everyone who so generously supports the mission of Mercy Medical Center. The aftermath of the June flood challenged us to react quickly to provide financial support to employees of the hospital who suffered tremendous losses in the wake of the floodwaters. The Foundation’s Employee Flood Relief Fund has, to date, received gifts from 445 individuals and organizations. Thanks to the generosity of so many of Mercy’s friends, the Foundation was able to provide immediate financial assistance of over $119,700 to 141 Mercy employees. We are committed to building this fund so that we can support our co-workers who are struggling to overcome the demands placed before them as they rebuild their lives. We hope you enjoy this issue of Partners. Our intent is to share the stories of the people, programs and projects that are part of the Mercy family and who have been touched by your generosity. We deeply appreciate your support, and looking forward, we join the hospital in its dedication to being “better than ever.”

Record Number of New Founders’ Society Members 34 new Founders’ Society members were recognized on September 16 at a dinner held at the Cedar Rapids Country Club. This annual event was a celebration of the human spirit and a grateful tribute to those who have been the most loyal and generous supporters of the hospital’s mission. This newest group was honored along with the 158 current members — those who have included Mercy in their estate plans, created an endowed fund, made a planned gift, or contributed a total of $50,000 or more in lifetime gifts. Entertainment was provided by SPT Theatre and each new member received a framed drawing of the original hospital. Summer Santa Comes to Mercy One of the many blessings that came to Mercy Medical Center during the flood of 2008 was the Summer Santa project. Cleveland, Ohio native, Sue Maher, initiated a toy drive throughout the Cleveland area involving malls, churches and schools. On Friday, July 18, a truckload filled with over $15,000 worth of toys arrived in Cedar Rapids. Step2 Toy Company, American Greetings, Half Price Books and many children and families donated new toys and books that were distributed to families and children who had been affected by the flood. Santa, along with community volunteers and Mercy employees, greeted children on July 21 and 22 at the former Penny Saver building at 621 4th Avenue SE. Every child left with three to four free toys and a big smile on their face. The entire event was a muchneeded morale boost for all involved. Mercy thanks Sue, her friends and family for their commitment, compassion, and selfless efforts. Below, area children enjoy a visit from Santa a month after the flood.
