A Message From the City Librarian and Mayor mpl.org Welcome to Fall! It is back-to-school time for students and the Milwaukee Public Library is here to support your child’s school success. Library collections are filled with books that will both assist with homework and inspire reading for pleasure. MPL also offers programs for all ages, from story times to afterschool programs. Story times are designed to develop literacy skills in young children, while our afterschool programs provide enriching and fun learning experiences for older students. The library is the place to read, learn and connect. Don’t forget that the best back-to-school supply for your child is a free Milwaukee Public Library card. Visit any MPL location with your child to sign-up for a card.

Program Registration Information Programs that require registration will note that in the description. There are three ways to register: 1) By phone ― call 286-3011 | 2) In person ― see any librarian, or | 3) Online at mpl.org. Use the Events, Programs and Classes Calendar under RESOURCES to search for your class or program and fill out the registration information. Photography at Milwaukee Public Library Programs For program promotion purposes, from time to time photographs may be taken of participants. If you do not wish to have your child’s photo taken, please notify the photographer and/or librarian.

Teacher in the Library Teachers are available after school at selected libraries to assist students in grades 1 through 8 and their parents with homework help, academic support and encouragement. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. American Indians of Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts celebrates with stories and a traditional beading project for the entire family. Artist Barbara Gross is a member of the Red Lake Nation of Ojibwas and the Bear clan. She also enjoys sharing stories that her mother would have heard as a child. Schlitz Audubon will demonstrate the significance of indigenous creatures to the American Indian way of life by incorporating live animals in this program. Supported by a grant from the Dutton Foundation. Tippecanoe Tuesday, Nov 28, 6-7 pm

Wild Fall Series at Tippecanoe for Families Visit Tippecanoe Branch throughout the fall to enjoy some wild programming thanks to a grant from the Dutton Foundation.

These programs will be held during Tippecanoe’s usual story time on Friday mornings.

Screech Owl at Midnight Hollow Story time comes to life in this interactive program presented by Schlitz Audubon. Children will enjoy the tale of a tenacious screech owl family with artifacts and a live Eastern Screech Owl. Friday, Sep 15, 10:30-11:30 am

Owling Wehr Nature Center presents the story of Goodnight Owl by Pat Hutchings. Explore the adaptations of these nighttime prowlers using mounts and artifacts, and make an owl puppet to take home. Friday, Oct 13, 10:30-11:30 am

Celebrate Autumn Truck Studio Art Workshops presented by Artists Working in Education, Inc. (A.W.E.) A drop-in program designed for children in Grades K5-5, although older siblings are welcome. Each visit begins with an A.W.E. artist reading aloud a story or two and then discussing the book or illustrator. Participants will then work on imaginative art activities relevant to the book or artistic theme for the day. This is a great opportunity to be creative, try new techniques and have fun expressing your artistic point of view. Everyone gets to take home their creations. Oct 21 - Stretching with Storybooks Stretch while reading stories with YogaConnects LLC! Work on the balancing, stretching and breathing techniques used in yoga based on the characters in the book. Oct 28 - Down on the Farm Let’s all work the farm together because “many hands make light work.” We’ll pretend to plant, care for, and harvest our produce, then sell our wares to customers!

Join us each Saturday morning from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the story nook for imaginative play for families with young children. Each program is designed as a fun family outing that also incorporates development of early literacy skills. Sep 2 - CLOSED Sep 9 - Read! Read! Read! It’s Magic! Reading can provide children with information, spark their imaginations, and nurture a love for language. In this fast-paced reading motivation program, Bob Kann, a Professor of Reading Education and author of six children’s books, creatively uses storytelling, juggling, and magic to inspire kids to read. Kids are guaranteed to want to read the books highlighted in this program. Oct 7 Celebrate Hispanic Heritage-Make Your Own Tortilla Experience the foods, flavors and sounds from Mexico with experienced Mexican cook, Margarita Sandoval Skare. Margarita will present the preparation of flour tortillas learned from her mother. Participants will see how the dough is prepared, roll the dough, and place the flattened tortilla on a griddle (Comal) for cooking. The homemade tortillas will be filled with cheese for a delicious quesadilla appetizer. Registration is required.

MPL offers free continuing education Tier 2 child care provider workshops as approved by the Wisconsin Registry. More information is available in person from the workshop presenters.
