GHPLGHPL Week 4 Report ASANTE KOTOKO MOVE JOINT-TOP WITH ADUANA STARS AS HEARTS OF OAKS RECORD FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Week 4 of the Ghana Premier League started on Saturday at the Sogakofe Red Bull Arena where WAFA halted Aduana Stars’ winning run. The first half of the game ended with Aduana Stars having a 1-0 lead courtesy Samuel Adams on the 29th minute. WAFA returned for the 2nd half in a typical WAFA fashion with a dominant display. They quickly leveled the scores 11 minutes from restart through Richmond Lamptey from a Majeed Ashimeru assist, the first time the defence of Aduana have been breached this season.

The game was almost reduced to WAFA attackers versus Stephen Adams, Aduana’s shot stopper for the game. Stephen Adams heroics coupled with Komlan Agbegniedan’s wastefulness made sure Aduana returned to Dormaa with a point, enough to keep them joint-top with rivals Asante Kotoko. The Ashanti Regional derby between Ashanti Gold and Asante Kotoko was rained off on Sunday after the first half which ended 1 all with goals from Yakubu Mohammed (Kotoko) and Amos Addai ( Ashanti Gold ). As per the regulations governing the game in Ghana, the match had to be replayed the following day. The game went on as rescheduled on Monday afternoon at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium. The first half of the game was very cagey with both coaches employing pragmatic style . The game burst into life in the 2nd half where the two teams started creating couple of chances. One of the chances fell to Kotoko’s Yakubu Mohammed and the former Ashanti Gold striker punished his former club to win all three points for the Porcupine Warriors increasing their points tally to 10 from a possible 12. Zdravko Dugarusic’s charges are now joint-top with Aduana Stars. The win is the first for Kotoko in Obuasi since 2010. Defending Champions Wa Allstars officially begun their title defence over the weekend after being occupied by continental games from week 1. They traveled to their favourite away grounds Accra Sports Stadium to face Hearts of Oaks. This fixture last season ended in a 3-1 victory for the Wa club. Hearts were without a win after three games. This was a must win game to calm down the aggrieved supporters. Ivorian national Alexander Kouassi opened his Ghana Premier League account on the 34th minute to give Hearts the lead. The Phobias had a couple of chances to put the game to bed but they failed to do so. Their fears manifested on the 83rd minute when Richard Arthur gave Wa Allstars an equaliser. Hearts did put up their best game in a long run. They were the better of the two sides. It would’ve been overly painful for them not to win. For once football was fair, Thomas Abbey connected an Alex Kouassi cross to restore Hearts’ lead 5 minutes to full time. The win has moved them to the ‘top four’ , and 4 points adrift of leaders Aduana Stars. This is not bad for a struggling team. Liberty Professionals and Medeama SC were involved in a 5 goal thriller at the Dansoman Carl Reindolf Park. The home side won by 3 goals to 2. Samuel Sarfo and Bernard Arthur were on the scoresheet for Liberty with the latter netting a brace. Medeama’s goals were scored by Justice Blay and Felix Addo. Inter Allies got their first win of the season when Ebusua Dwarfs visited them at the El Wak Stadium.

Two blunders from Dwarfs’ keeper Frank Andoh afforded Inter Allies the chance to head into half time with a 2 goals lead. Kwame Antwi Amoako and Samuel Konney got Inter Allies’ 2 goals. Nicholas Gyan’s 2nd half goal proved to be only a consolation for the Crabs. At the Nduom Stadium, Elmina Sharks had Isaac Mensah to thank for their first ever win the Ghana Premier League. Tema Youth thought they have secured a point till the 89th minute when they gave away a free kick. Isaac Mensah stood behind the ball amidst cheers of goal from the crowd, if the goal cheers was a mere dream from the fans, he made it a reality with a wonderful strike of a freekick. Bolga Allstars like fellow debutant Elmina Sharks, secured their first ever win in the Ghana Premier League over the weekend. Samuel Norgbey scored the historic goal via a spot kick awarded against Great Olympics on the 50th minute. In the Bono & Ahafo derby, Bechem United drew 1 all with Berekum Chelsea. Sadiq Abubakar secured a draw for Bechem United after going down to a Seth Appiah goal in the 28th minute. GHANA PREMIER LEAGUE WEEK 4 RESULTS

FIRE BRAND ADUANA SUBJECT BOLGA ALLSTARS TO BAPTISM OF FIRE

Aduana Stars made mince meat of Bolga Allstars when the 2009/10 Champions welcomed the debutants to the Dormaa Park. The game went as scripted. Zakaria Mumuni gave the league leaders a first half lead. Few minutes after recess Nathaniel Asamoah made it 2-0. Noah Martey and Tanko Mohammed would go on to make it an emphatic win scoring a goal each first of the season to make it 4-0. Aduana are proving pundits right. They were tipped to challenge for the title after missing out on the trophy last season in the penultimate week to Wa Allstars. After three games they have a 100% record, 9 points, 6 goals scored and none conceded. Second on the league log Asante Kotoko left it late against Bechem United. The Porcupine Warriors once again struggled at the Baya Yara Stadium. It’s evident the 3-5-2 formation of coach Zdravko Dugarusic is yet to be mastered by the star studded Asante Kotoko squad. The reds were frustrated by Bechem United who were led by former red Ahmed Toure. The Bechem United marksman bragged before the game. He promised to score a goal should dedender Abeiku Ainooson start for Kotoko. The defender did start the game and ironically he scored the only goal of the game from an 81st minutes spot kick to secure Kotoko all 3 points. Accra Hearts Of Oaks got their first goal in the 3 week league but it wasn’t enough to secure them their first win. The Phobia lads threw away a 9th minute lead by Patrick Razak against Dwarfs. Nicholas Gyan grabbed the equaliser for the Crabs in the 2nd half. The result means Hearts Of Oaks have drawn all their 3 games so far this season. The Wonder Club of Ghana, Great Olympics squandered a two goal lead to draw 2 all against Elmina Sharks. Abel Manomey scored a brace, his 3rd goal in two games. Debutants Elmina Sharks managed to crawl back to tie the score, their first ever point in the Premier division. Benjamin Tweneboah and substitute Joseph Mensah got the historic goals for the Central regional club. Inter Allies managed to snatch a point away to Medeama SC. Bernard Ofori scored for the Mauves, Isaac Osae equalized for Inter Allies. Tema Youths and Ashanti Gold shared the spoil at the Tema Park. Shafiu Mumuni’s 2nd half goal cancelled out a Joseph Bentil first half goal. Two goals from Seth Appiah was all Berekum Chelsea needed to beat Liberty Professionals. The game between Wa Allstars and WAFA will come on at a later date. Review: Ghana Premier League Week 2 ANOTHER BARREN DRAW FOR HEARTS AS ADUANA MOVE TOP OF THE LEAGUE

Week Two of the league started on Saturday when Ashanti Gold welcomed Great Olympics to the Len Clay stadium. Great Olympics coach, Godwin Attram tried his best impression of Antonio Conte with a 3-4-3 formation. The wonder club had Hearts Of Oaks legend Dan Quaye as their captain. He is not the only veteran of the team. They had Osei Boateng in post. Dan Quaye, Osei Boateng together with their coach, Attram were team mates when Ghana’s U-17 team Black Satellite lost to Ronaldinho’s Brazil in the final of Egypt 1997. The two teams sold out a very good game. It was no surprise to see the game produce 4 goals. The heroes of the day were Ashanti Gold’s Hans Kwofie and Amos Addai. The latter produced a hattrick of assist for the former to hit the first hattrick of the season within only 8 minutes, 38,41 and 46. Abel Manomey’s 65th minute goal from a goal keeping blunder proved to be only a consolation at full time as the game ended 3-1 in favour of the miners. Out of the five Sunday games, 2 finished barren. At the Nduom Stadium, Elmina Sharks played host to Aduana in their first ever appearance in the Ghana Premier League. The newly completed stadium was packed with a charged atmosphere. Aduana would silence the home fans with a Godfred Saka free kick on the 28th minute. The goal was some what controversial as there were doubts the ball had cross the goal line. The Ogya boys were able to defend their first half lead to record their 2nd win in the league, 2 wins in 2 games to send them top of the league. At the Red Bull Arena, a first half goal from Gideon Waja and a 2nd from Togolese International Komlan Agbegniedan in the 2nd half were enough to secure WAFA all 3 points against Ebusua Dwarfs. The Crabs had Joseph Esso and Albert Hammond sent off in a game to forget. Berekum Chelsea and Asante Kotoko played out an entertaining draw at the Golden City Park. The result leaves Kotoko with 4 points from a possible 6, enough to keep them 2nd on the log. At the Accra Sports Stadium Hearts Of Oaks played a 2nd successive goalless drawn game. The Phobias couldn’t break a resilient Medeama side. The new Scottish coach of Hearts Of Oaks would be worried after 180 minutes of league game without a goal. Liberty Professionals left it late against regional rivals Inter Allies at the Dansoman Carl Reindolf Park. With 6 minutes to full time the game was barren but two quick goals from Bernard Arthur and Gerald Arkson in the 83rd and 84th minutes respectively gave Liberty their first win in the league. Bechem United Vs Tema Youths has been postponed due to the former’s CAF Confederations Cup game Bolga Allstars Vs Wa Allstars will come on at a later date with the defending champions’ CAF Champions League engagement. 20016/17 GHANA PREMIER LEAGUE WEEK 2 RESULTS Ashanti Gold [3 – 1] Great Olympics 38¢ [1 – 0] Hans Kwofie 41¢ [2 – 0] Hans Kwofie 46¢ [3 – 0] Hans Kwofie 65¢ [3 – 1] Abel Manomey Liberty Professionals [2 – 0] Inter Allies 83¢ [1 – 0] Bernard Arthur 84¢ [2 – 0] Gerald Arkson Elmina Sharks [0 – 1] Aduana Stars 28¢ Godfred Saka Hearts Of Oaks [0 – 0] Medeama SC WAFA [2 – 0] Ebusua Dwarfs 40¢ [1 – 0] Gideon Waja 80¢ [2 – 0] Komlan Agbegniedan Berekum Chelsea [0 – 0] Asante Kotoko Bechem United P-P Tema Youths Bolga Allstars P-P Wa Allstars LEAGUE TABLE

2016/17 Ghana Premier League – Week 1 Report ASANTE KOTOKO BREAK OPENING GAME CURSE. DWARFS MOVE TOP OF THE LEAGUE.

The much awaited Ghana Premier League finally kick started in five league centers. The pick of the week was the game between Asante Kotoko and Liberty Professionals. Going into the game, Kotoko had a bad record in respect to opening week games against clubs from the Greater Accra region. The Porcupines were winless in their 8 previous week 1 games against clubs from the Capital. The two sides struggled to find their rhythm on the bad Kumasi pitch. Nevertheless Liberty took the lead in the 35th minute with a Benjamin Eshun goal. Papa Arko had a golden chance to double their lead right after recess but Felix Annan pulled a good save to keep Kotoko in the game. Kotoko took control of the game after Felix Annan’s save. Their good spell yielded results within the 57th – 60th minute off a Yakubu Mohammed brace. The first a spot kick and the 2nd a close range strike. Aduana managed to beat Ashanti Gold by a solitary goal in the dying minutes of the game. Substitute Derrick Sasraku was at the end of a Zakaria Mumuni corner kick to send the Dormaa Park into a jubilant mood. Ebusua Dwarfs were the big winners of the day when they hosted debutant Bolga Allstars at the Cape Coast Stadium. Joseph Esso opened the scores under 10 minutes, the first goal of the Ghana Premier League season. Waheed Issahaku leveled the scores for Bolga Allstars, their first ever goal in the premier division. Albert Hammond a 2nd half substitute by coach Ricardo Da Rocha scored a brace to win the game for the Crabs, sending them top of the table. Medeama SC could only pip WAFA by a Bernard Ofori lone goal. Tema Youth made a good return to the elite division. The Harbour City club defeated Berekum Chelsea 2-1. Theophilous Ogoe and Joseph Bentil got the two goals for the home side. Berekum Chelsea’s consolation came from Evan Obeng’s boot. Hearts Of Oaks and Inter Allies played out a goalless draw at the El Wak Stadium on monday. This fixture produced arguably the best game of last season but today’s wasn’t going to be the same after rain ruined the pitch hours to kick off. The game was fairly even with Inter Allies creating the better chances but Ben Mensah in post for the Phobians made sure Hearts begin the season with a point. Wa Allstars’ game against Elmina Sharks and Great Olympics versus Bechem United has been postponed because of Wa Allstars’ and Bechem United’s Continental engagement. 2016/17 GHANA PREMIER LEAGUE WEEK 1 RESULTS

2016/17 GHANA PREMIER LEAGUE The AFCON season is over. The Blackstars failed to win back the heart of the nation. Avram Grant has left his post. Critics are calling for the head of the FA President. The rants, criticisms and the crys keep getting louder overshadowing the hype of the new Ghana Premier League season.

Nevertheless the 2017 GHPL season kicks off this Sunday, 12th February. 16 clubs, 8 Regions, 15 league Centres, 6 Previous Champions, 2 debutants, 1 trophy and a new Television right holder. This season promises to be intriguing with all the clubs eyeing the trophy with Wa Allstars triumph last season proving that the league trophy is not the preserve of the big clubs. Like every competition under the sun, there are favourites. With the 2007 GHPL, Asante Kotoko and Aduana Stars are the pre tournament favourites. The Porcupine Warriors will kick start their campaign with a home game against Liberty Professionals. Now coached by Zdravko Dugarusic, they’ve had the best of transfer activities in the league in recent seasons. The team look soo sweet and fearsome on paper. Kotoko’s last season’s challenge, creating chances have been addressed with the signing of Baba Mahama, Kwame Boahen and Isaac Quansah. They’ve also signed Seth Opare from Aduana Stars to help in the defensive midfield department. Having sold Dauda Mohammed to Belgium giants Royal Anderlecht they went to Medeama SC to plug their leading marksman Abass Mohammed to lead the attack. Asante Kotoko’s Sunday opponent have had a modest preseason. They will be without last season’s top scorer and best player Latif Blessing who they sold to Sporting Kansas City in the Major League Soccer. Last season’s runner up, Aduana stars will begin their title challenge at home to Ashanti Gold. Their talisman Yahaya Mohammed is no more with them. This would be an opportunity for Nathaniel Asamoah to lead the attack after playing second fidel to Yahaya in last season’s campaign. Bright Adjei, the striker who won CNN’s Goal of The Week twice in 2016 is expected to partner the former Asante Kotoko and Medeama striker. Noah Martey and Zakaria Mumuni had a very good debut season in Dormaa changing the then defensive and boring Aduana to a flamboyant side with their technical play in midfield. Their defence remain shrewed as ever with Emmanuel Akuoko and Godfred Saka still there. Ashanti Gold will hope to put last season’s relegation troubles behind them. The 4 time league champions still have experienced Bashir Hayford as their coach. The Elephants don’t look so scary on paper but they can not be written off. Glorious Accra Hearts Of Oaks play away to Inter Allies at the EL Wak Stadium on Monday. This fixture last season produced the best game of the season with Hearts coming from 2 goals down to defeat Inter Allies by 3-2. Hearts have had a troubled off season which reached it worst stage when the playing body boycotted training last week for unpaid salaries of accumulated months. The club has been without a head coach during their preseason preparation. Assistant coach Henri Wellington have been training them. Few days to the start of the league they’ve brought in Scottish Frank Nuttall. The coach will renew his rivalry with Zdravko Dugarusic having coach Gor Mahia in the Kenya league when the Kotoko gaffer was with AFC Leopards. Coach Nuttall is holds Uefa Licence A. He’s work with Middlesbrough in England, Hibernian and Rangers in Scotland as a physical instructor. On the transfer front, they’ve replaced Mustapha Essuman with Malik Akowuah. The Phobias have actually left everything late in their preparation for the upcoming season. Orthodox number 10, Winful Cobbinah has resigned for Hearts from All Nagrah. Gockel Ahortor, one of the best midfielders in Ghana is on the verge of moving from Hearts’ Monday opponent to the Oak Family. Should that happen the followers of the Glorious club can be optimistic for a bright season. The midfield partnership of Akowuah and Ahortor would dominate many midfield in the league. Inter Allies have lost Evans Mensah to HJK Helsinki, Baba Mensah to Viborg FF but typical of them they’ve duly replaced them with equally talented but unknown players. Their major signing was finalized on Thursday, signing WAFA’s captain Martin Antwi, a pacey winger to augment their attack. Ebusua Dwarfs would be welcoming debutant Bolga Allstars at the Cape Coast Stadium. Dwarfs had a ‘low key’ off season activities making no significant signings. Moving away from their favourite Swidu Park to the new Cape Coast Stadium, visiting teams won’t be intimated unlike the always packed Swidu Park. Bolga Allstars will be tasting elite league football for the first time. Unfortunately for the debutants, the Bolga Park isn’t ready for Premier League football thus moving to Tamale another region. This wouldn’t help their cause to stay in the premier division for long. Another debutant Elmina Sharks were supposed to play Defending Champions Wa Allstars but the game can’t come on because of Allstars’ CAF Champions League commitment. Bechem United will also be engaged in CAF Inter-clubs Competition. Their game against returnees Great Olympics has been postponed. Team Youths play Berekum Chelsea at the Tema Park on their return to the premier division. Medeama SC, another club tipped to challenge for the league will start the season at home to WAFA. They have in their camp arguably the best player in the league Kwesi Donsu. The midfielder scored 15 goals last season for the Mauves. WAFA always have talents to call on. The ‘football farm house’ have to make do without Blackstars winger Samuel Tetteh and last season’s captain Martin Antwi for this season but Togolese international Komlana Agbegniedan has returned with an AFCON experience.
